25.01.2022 Public art as an event or performance; where the process of creation is as engaging as the work itself #publicart

24.01.2022 Most recognise the diverse social benefits generated by the arts but many fail to recognise its economic benefits. The arts consistently contribute to both domestic and interstate tourism in Australia. One only needs to look at cities like Melbourne to also understand its potential to generate international tourism if we invest in it with a holistic long term cultural strategy in place. #arts

21.01.2022 ‘Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) 2017’ by John Gerrard. Site specific, interactive and highly engaging with an embedded environmental + political message encouraging further thought. All the necessary ingredients for high quality #publicart

20.01.2022 Architects >>> Why work with us? >>> CURATE publik have an architect on our team. We understand built form language and context as well as public art’s ability to contribute to active public space. We embed your architectural language into our approach to generate outcomes which compliment and enhance the surrounding buildings and context. 16.01.2022 SOFTlab’s ‘mirror mirror’ installation in Alexandria, Virginia utilises fresnel lens technology from the local lighthouse to generate a highly engaging and interactive work of public art. Its appearance and the beams of light it emits respond to the movement as well as sound of those approaching the structure. #publicart
14.01.2022 ‘Wrapped Coast - One Million Square Feet’ by Christo & Jeanne-Claude served not only as a highly ambitious project of monumental scale but a catalyst for contemporary public art in Australia. Still one of the great works of public art in Australia fifty years on. #publicart
14.01.2022 Beautiful ephemeral installation by behin ha in Ohio using salvaged offcut material from a local manufacturing process. The re-purposed material will be returned to the manufacturer for recycling after its temporary lifespan as a local community public space #publicart
14.01.2022 Danish-Icelandic artist Olafur Eliasson is responsible for many highly ambitious public art projects bringing attention to the issue of climate change. His Ice Watch project transported a series of glacial ice blocks from Greenland to the forecourt of Tate Modern in London. The project elicits an emotional response as people interact with the ice whilst watching it melt over a period of time. It is a memorable work of public art but also a thoughtful ‘call to action’ on climate change. #publicart
11.01.2022 Spanish architecture studio SelgasCano’s work oscillates between the fields of architecture and public art. Jose Selgas + Lucía Cano generate sensory provoking buildings, pavilions and public art installations such as the Palacio de Congresos (congress centre in Spain) and Second Home L.A. (co-working space in Los Angelas). Both projects display abstract sculptural qualities rarely achieved in architecture. Their ‘Second Home’ installation as part of the Serpentine Pavilion Commissions displays an alluring fragility and lightness. SelgasCano’s work and pavilion installations such as the NVG Architecture and Serpentine Pavilion Commissions remind us the line separating architecture, public space and public art is thin. Many of our favourite projects and structures sit firmly in the space between all three fields. #publicart
10.01.2022 The debate regarding mural saturation point often revolves around availability and suitability of public realm wall space. High quality public art is always exploring, innovating + evolving. Monumental scale ground plane mural in France by Saype. #publicart
09.01.2022 ‘Papillon’ (french for butterfly) designed by Nike Savvas, constructed by UAP was commissioned as part of the Barangaroo Development Authority’s Temporary Art Initiative. An immersive ephemeral installation the artist described as It is at once a flag, a target, a sign and a butterfly. Successful public art is highly engaging and almost always multi faceted. #publicart
08.01.2022 Art generated through collaboration with science often produces highly engaging and educational outcomes. Could this type of work be transferred to the public realm? #publicart
07.01.2022 Jun Ong’s beautiful ephemeral installation ‘Star’ sited in a construction site reminds us temporary works in transitional environments present opportunities that wouldn’t and couldn’t be realised as permanent works. #publicart
07.01.2022 Sculptor Dion Horstmans has attracted a large following for his gallery based abstract works over the past twenty five years. ‘Genesis 2018’ completed with UAP is one of a number of large public art projects allowing Dion to explore the interaction between form, light and shadow at a larger scale in the public realm. His work is immediately identifiable, employing dynamic energy charged geometry and a trademark use of steel. Dionhorstmans #publicart
06.01.2022 Ronan + Erwin Bouroullec’s ‘Nuage, promenade’ installation in the Miami Design District, completed in collaboration with UAP, is a great example of merging public art with public realm infrastructure. A canopy with planters the project draws on their modular cloud from previous works. The outcome is multifaceted in that it provides shelter, shade, explores shadow, will change over time as the planting grows over it but also establishes a highly sculptural and beautifully crafted element in the streetscape. #publicart
06.01.2022 Many of our favourite works of art and experiences would fall under the category of temporary art. Ephemeral public art by its nature unlocks opportunities + possibilities that couldn’t be achieved through permanent works #temporaryart #publicart
02.01.2022 Our shortlisted public art proposal for the Yanchep Lagoon Primary School Aviary generates a functional but highly sculptural structure drawing inspiration from its landscape, flora, fauna and local indigenous culture. It seeks to establish a new central focus or gathering space for the school. Multi faceted, it is at the same time a meeting point, a place for social interaction, a place evoking discussion, a place eliciting the imagination and a place for informal learning a...bout our native wildlife as well as indigenous culture. The birds are housed in an organic enclosure encouraging the students to observe and interact with them in as natural environment as possible. The angled structural poles reference Yanget the native species of flax covering large expanses of Yanchep’s landscape. The aviary footprint employs the circle as an inclusive shape. The circle is a social facilitator in almost all cultures including Aboriginal culture. Sections of the aviary will also be adorned by woven netting referencing Aboriginal fish trap and basket weaving which is likely to have occurred in the area. This also replicates the process birds typically engage in weaving collected objects to create their nests. #CURATEpublik #publicart
