19.01.2022 Professor Simon Koblar is the Professor of Neurology and Neuroscience at the University of Adelaide and the Director of the Stroke Research Programme. He has been instrumental in establishing a foundation for stroke research in South Australia, using a collaborative and innovative approach working with clinicians, basic and medical scientists, SA Health, industry, community support groups and other health professionals. He is excited by the strength and breadth of stroke researchers in South Australia and sees that through Cure For Stroke Australia, new therapies will find their way to the clinic. Working alongside Roy Drew, who is also part of the stroke unit, they manage all stroke clinical trials, giving hope to those who have been impacted by a stroke. 16.01.2022 New research out of the UK into the effects of diet on stroke risk show that vegetarians have an increased risk of stroke, likely due to the low cholesterol levels (which decrease their risk of heart disease) and deficiency in some nutrients, including B12. The study continues, but does suggest that a well-balanced diet is best. 06.01.2022 Researchers noted that adults who got six to eight hours of shut-eye a night, "short sleepers" had an 11 per cent greater risk of heart attack or stroke, while "long sleepers" had 33 per cent increased risk.

04.01.2022 A new Australian-led study has found that taking low-dose aspirin doesn't prevent cardiovascular disease. The seven-year study of more than 19,000 healthy people aged over 70 found taking 100 milligrams of aspirin a day didn't prolong their life or significantly reduce the risk of a first heart attack or stroke.

03.01.2022 Marilyn Jackson thought she would share the same fate as her loving father when she suffered a stroke earlier this year. However, thanks to medical advancements, Marilyns stroke did not leave her with any debilitating side effects! I feel extremely fortunate to be given such a lifesaving treatment and privileged to have had the opportunity to participate in the clinical trial. I thank him (A/Prof Kleinig) and the team at the Stroke Unit of the RAH who saved my life. 02.01.2022 Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a key risk factor for stroke, and people with AF are up to seven times more likely to suffer a stroke. Now, there is good news for these patients as Health Minister Greg Hunt MP announces that cardiac catheter ablations, used to treat AF, will now be included on the Governments Protheses List. Thousands of Australian patients are expected to benefit from this treatment, which will save lives!
