22.01.2022 Big thanks to our volunteer Roxanne Hodda and Central Queensland Today for printing this letter to the editor about Australia’s need for a more diverse donor registry. Great job! To make the registry more diverse we need more young people aged 18 to 35 join, more males and more people with culturally diverse or indigenous backgrounds to join. It’s the only way we can find more lifesaving stem cell matches for patients! www.urthecure.com.au/swab... #urthecure #strength2give #diversity #multicultural #equality #bloodcancer #stemcelldonation #bonemarrowdonation #swab2save #awareness #education #morelifesavingmatches

20.01.2022 Thank you to the Leukaemia Foundation and for all the hard work of the many people involved to create the National Strategic Action Plan for Blood Cancer! This is actually really exciting, the peak body for blood cancer in Australia has identified the need to improve outcomes for those from disadvantaged groups such as Australians living in remote or regional areas (see our volunteer Roxanne’s great article in the Brisbane Times https://bit.ly/2GGftUZ), those with culturally ...diverse backgrounds and more! And extra exciting for us. strong mentions throughout the plan on the need to diversify the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry by adding more people of culturally diverse and indigenous backgrounds! UR the Cure volunteer Roxanne Hodda and I submitted our feedback to this plan along with many other organisations including the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and Strength to Give, clinicians, blood cancer patients and their loved ones to help shape the plan. Identifying the problem is the first step to solving it, and to have the Leukaemia Foundation recognise it is a big milestone and gives us much hope for a better future Pamela https://www.leukaemia.org.au/national-action-plan/ #leukaemiafoundation #strength2give #urthecure #stemcelldonation #stemcelldonor #bonemarrowdonation #bloodcancer #match4all

20.01.2022 #TheKindnessPandemic Continuing Melissa's legacy of spreading kindness and hope If you're bored, stuck in iso or just looking for a way to give back, learn about stem cell donation and how easy it is these days. You could save the life of someone with blood cancer...without even leaving your home by ordering a cheek swab kit online! Visit www.urthecure.com.au to learn more. And keep your eyes peeled for an exciting announcement soon of how you can help spread kindness and... awareness, inspired by this very idea in the photo! **Special call out to young males aged between 18 and 35 and people with culturally diverse backgrounds. Please spread this message to the people you know who fit this criteria. The key to finding matches and saving lives is through a diverse stem cell registry, Australia's registry is very "plain" and we need it to be more "colourful"! It severely lacks males and those with culturally diverse backgrounds.** #urthecure #spreadkindness #teambaker #awareness #education #morelifesavingmatches #stemcelldonation #swab2save #curecancer #diversity #strength2give

19.01.2022 How amazing is this over 240 young people from the Middle Eastern community have joined the stem cell registry (and counting) in support of a young woman searching for her match! The family have done such a great job in coordinating and educating the community about stem cell donation and we’ve seen a big response with over 100 people ordering their kits online to join too! There’s a desperate need to diversify the donor registry and the Middle Eastern population are just o...ne of many groups who are underrepresented, meaning patients of this heritage will struggle to find their match. Please continue to help us share this important message, especially if you have connections or networks within the Middle Eastern community to help this beautiful young woman who is waiting for her lifesaving match. If you’re aged 18 to 35, order your mouth cheek swab kit to join www.urthecure.com.au.swab #urthecure #swab2save #strength2give #education #awareness #morelifesavingmatches #diversity #middleeastern #match4all

18.01.2022 Did you know our partner Strength to Give have their website translated into several different languages?! The accessibility of this information about stem cell donation in different languages is important and really great to see, because a diverse registry is the only way we can find more lifesaving matches for blood cancer patients! Currently over 80% of the Australian registry is made up of people with a North Caucasian background with culturally diverse groups extremely u...nder-represented, majority female and only 4% are young males. It’s this reason that Australian doctors choose better suited overseas donors for their patients, in fact over 85% of Australian patients receive their stem cells from overseas. So come on Australia lets diversify our registry, our country is multicultural and our registry needs to be the same! Do you recognise your language? Tag your family and friends! #urthecure #strength2give #multicultural #diversity #ethnicity #culturalheritage #match4all

18.01.2022 Uncle Max’s handy work spreading awareness far and wide! I knew Melissa personally and she was an incredible woman. She struggled to find her stem cell match because of her mixed Italian heritage. So please if you have a culturally diverse background or know someone who does, then share the info and order your cheek swab kit to join at www.urthecure.com.au/swab Max’s rear windscreen artwork has inspired many to join and even inspired us at UR the Cure to sell bumper stickers ...to help fundraise and continue raising awareness! 14.01.2022 World Marrow Donor Day (WMDD) is a special day celebrated once per year to thank all registry members worldwide. We want to thank everyone, donors who already h...ave donated, and donors who are on the registry waiting to donate. On this WMDD we need your help to recruit, as you will likely know some healthy 18-35-year-olds who could become a hero for someone in need. Our little charity has limited marketing funds, so we rely heavily on word of mouth. Just by having a chat with the people you know, you can help give more people in need, a chance of survival. Remember that you don't need to leave the comfort of your own home to complete the Strength to Give swab registration kit. People just need to order via our website, and we'll send it out in the post! This WMDD we teamed up with the Melbourne Rebels to bring a special #THANKYOUDONOR video message to you. Check it out below and share!

11.01.2022 Finding your stem cell match is tricky at the best of times, especially if you have a culturally diverse background. The COVID-19 pandemic has made this even trickier and it’s affecting all Australian patients, no matter what their cultural heritage. To rely less on overseas donors and the complexities of getting overseas stem cells imported, we need a more diverse registry. We need more young males and more people with culturally diverse backgrounds to join, and that means m...ore money! The Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry has the funds and capacity to add 100,000 potential donors to the registry over 5 years, but need Federal and State government approval to use it! You’d think this is a no brainer but unfortunately the bureaucracy of it all has made this the most challenging part for progress in Australia! Our government needs to step up and we need to keep applying more pressure to make these changes we so desperately need. More money means more donors and more lives saved! Great piece by ABC TV + iview and Strength to Give! https://www.abc.net.au//covid-19-border-closure-/12688108 #strengthtogive #strength2give #bloodcancerawareness #swabgoals #urthecure #stemcelldonation #swab2save

08.01.2022 Life can be SCARY but LIFESAVING definitely isn't! . While TV shows and movies have wildly exaggerated blood stem cell donation especially bone marrow donationas something scary, the reality is much less dramatic. 07.01.2022 Giving life is a divine act, and that was how Kiran Kumar Karamchedu described the act of blood stem cell donation by Shabas T.S. that gave his daughter Manasvi a new lease of life. - https://worldmarrowdonorday.org//shabas-gives-new-lease-l/ World Marrow Donor Day September 19 is a day to celebrate the incredible people who save the lives of patients by donating their stem cells, just like Shabas! The blood stem cell registries around the world are inter-connected, so... saving the lives of blood cancer patients or those with blood disorders is a global effort. You could join the donor registry in Australia and save the life of someone on the other side of the world! (Note that donating stem cells happens locally so you don’t have to travel overseas to save a life)! One day just doesn’t seem enough to say thank you! 05.01.2022 Yesterday was such an incredible day, I'm so proud to be part of such a special community and seeing us all come together for the special day that was World Marrow Donor Day, it just warmed my heart So many shares, likes and messages of support to raise awareness on stem cell donation from countries all around the world, we all came together to celebrate in lots of different ways. And I just love the diversity of everyone involved. We are from different countries, speak di...fferent languages with different beliefs and religions, different sexualities, different colour of skin, and do you know what? It doesn't matter, because at the end of the day we are all human and we all have stem cells inside of us that can save a fellow human's life. I definitely felt the love and social media was just a buzz! And I'm so happy to announce that thanks to the generosity of Kere from LoobyLou Candles, we have received a $500 DONATION FROM SALES YESTERDAY!!! This will help us in our important work to ultimately find more lifesaving donors for patients in need. And thank you World Marrow Donor Day - WMDD for organising another successful one. Until next year! #thankyoudonor #WMDD2020 #loobyloucandles #urthecure

02.01.2022 Just over a year ago cheek swabs were introduced into Australia to make is easier for people to join the blood stem cell registry! Over 80% of Australian patients receive their stem cells from overseas, this is a problem in the covid-19 environment We need a better and more diverse donor registry in Australia... Young males aged between 18 to 30 are especially needed to join Young people with a culturally diverse or indigenous background are especially needed to join If you're a match with a patient and asked to donate your stem cells, 90% of the time it's done like a blood donation So what are you waiting for? 02.01.2022 For any of our Sydney sider supporters, let your 18 to 35 year old friends know about this event at the Manly Surf Club! A loved member of the Northern Beaches community needs your help, you could save his life! Everyone in the age range are welcome to join but we especially need more young men joining and those with a culturally diverse or indigenous background to join (these groups are under represented on the donor registry and we desperately need more people with these ch...aracteristics to increase the chances of finding matches for patients) SURFS UP SWABS UP! #urthecure #strength2give #swab2save #sportystemcells #surfing #stanthestemcell #stemcelldonation #savealife #manly #sydney #manlysurfschool #manlysurfclub Reposted from @manlysurfschool : We are putting out an urgent call for your help! A loved member of our Northern Beaches community, father and friend of the Manly Surf School was diagnosed only a few months ago with a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. He urgently needs a bone marrow transplant to help his immune system fight an infection. On Saturday 28th November between 7am-12pm at Manly Surf Club we will be on the search to find him a match and we need your help! All it requires is a quick cheek swab. If you are matched with a patient in need, 90% of the time donating stem cells is like giving blood. You can even read a book or watch TV during the donation and return to normal activities afterwards! Your body also replenishes its own blood stem cells so you don’t lose them forever after you donate. The whole process is quite simple and can save a life! To be a donor you must be aged between 18-35 years, hold a current medicare card and not eat, drink or smoke for 1 hour before doing the swab. If you can’t make the 28th November but would still like to be a donor please visit https://www.urthecure.com.au/swab to order your swab today. Any questions please contact Kate - [email protected]

01.01.2022 "I celebrate my transplant anniversary every year". Ness was the first adult in Australia to have a cord blood stem cell transplant over 20 years ago! I remembered having numerous chats in the lead up to my own cord blood transplant in 2012 with Ness, I was facing the scariest thing in my life and it was so nice to talk to someone who had gotten through to the other side! I hadn't met any other people who had a cord blood transplant so her support meant the world and such an... inspiration for me to see her success story. The reason Ness and I had cord blood transplants was because neither of us could find an adult stem cell match because of our cultural heritage (Ness with Chinese background and me with Lebanese background). Adult stem cell matches are preferred, cord blood was a "plan b" and not all patients are candidates for it, we were extremely lucky that it was even an option. Change in Australia has been slow. Fast forward 21 years from Ness' transplant and patients with culturally diverse backgrounds still struggle to find their match. Thankfully the introduction of cheek swabs 1 year ago is making it easier to target the ethnic and indigenous groups, but more needs to be done! The government needs to provide more funding to the Australian Bone Marrow Donor Registry and Strength to Give so we don't have small limitations to the number of people we can test. We'll keep fighting for the changes we need and when the time comes we will need your support again to help us! Pamela ...but for now, Ness' success story is another reason to say #THANKYOUDONOR in the lead up to World Marrow Donor Day - WMDD https://worldmarrowdonorday.org//i-celebrate-my-transplan/ #WMDD2020 #worldmarrowdonorday #thankyoudonor #urthecure
