19.01.2022 Friday Flashback on a Saturday! One of my most fun and rewarding jobs was choreographing a presentation ball for the Ashwood Special School! Every dance rehearsal was filled with joy, challenges and revelations. The absolute best
19.01.2022 To all my fellow Victorians I hope you are doing ok in Lockdown 2.0! I know this is a really tough time for some and my thoughts are with you. . I’ve had so much feedback that online dance sessions have provided a little dose of joy and a chance for people to connect through a shared experience. I’m also hearing those of you who have found the over saturation of screen time and online classes a bit tiring/uninspiring. . So i’m cooking up an offering that will be short and swe...et. A little spark of joy that keeps the body flowing. Something that can be done live or whenever you need it. Stay tuned, stay safe and wear a mask . Beautiful words and artwork by @morganharpernichols See more

13.01.2022 In knowing how to overcome the little things, a centimetre at a time, gradually when bigger things come, you’re prepared. You’re not taken by surprise, you’re not even angry or upset. It just rouses your spirit to do more - Katherine Dunham, pioneer of modern dance from an Afro/Caribbean perspective. . The last few weeks I’ve taken more of a step away from social media to do some deep internal work and carefully select what I want to let filter in. . The recent reinvigora...tion of the Black Lives Matter movement (along with everything 2020 is throwing at us!) has brought up a lot of complex thoughts and emotions. This is complex stuff! And I haven’t felt equipped to make insta/Facebook posts about it. . However, one thing I do know is that the world needs more people of colour finding and amplifying their voices. So here’s a little about me... . I am a bi-racial African American Aussie. Mum is from rural VIC and Dad is from rural Mississippi. I was born in Seattle, but grew up in Canberra Finding my voice, feeling connected and being seen within this context has been...an ongoing process. . Dance is a language that has allowed me to find a sense of connection with others, my heritage and the world. Dance and the arts have provided a unique way in which to experience my own freedom of expression while also teaching me how to REALLY listen. . Because of this I feel strongly that there is so much growth and healing that comes from seeking out the stories of others shared through the arts. . I can only speak from my personal perspective. So now more than ever let’s all get out there and ask questions, listen, celebrate each other, take it one step at a time, continue the conversation and be prepared to feel uncomfortable. Oh and in case I haven’t been clear SUPPORT THE ARTS! Stay curious xo @ashkoek See more

10.01.2022 Friday’s are for flashbacks! Isolation has given me plenty of time to reminisce on past performance, movement direction and teaching projects. Here’s one of my favourite images from the adult’s showcase at @thespacedancecentre last year. The sign language team getting expressive to ‘Joyful Joyful’
