Speed First, Line Second It’s looking like we may be able to use practice facilities pretty soon, so some putting practice is the best way to shoot lower scores.... Something to understand about putting, is straight putts will still go in if you hit them a little too soft or a bit too hard because the starting line of the putt is straight at the hole. With breaking or bending putts the starting line is outside the hole. If you hit the ball a little bit too soft the ball will break more and miss on low side, if you hit the ball a bit too hard the ball won’t break as much and will miss on the high side. It is therefore critical to match up the line of your putt to a specific pace. One of the best practice drills for matching the line of your putt to the speed requires a trip to the supermarket. Buy two metal skewers and some hat elastic. Tie each end of the elastic to the skewers you need enough elastic to stretch about 5 metres. Find a sloping part of the green, push one skewer into the ground about 30cm behind the hole stretch the elastic out and place the other skewer into the ground. Orientate the elastic line so it simulates the line of the putt. The skewer behind the hole will be to the side of the hole and is showing you the starting line of the putt. It may take a few tries to get the correct orientation of the elastic. Place three balls in a line directly under the elastic line. When you address the putt you will look down and see the ball under the elastic and the line of the putt. The image this creates will help your alignment and your perception of how the ball will track. When you start rolling the balls toward the hole you will quickly work out how to match up the speed of your putts with the line. Make sure you practice straight putts, small breaks, big breaks, uphill and downhill.
