24.01.2022 Yesterday's harvest.

24.01.2022 Happy Birthday Curly Community Garden! We've come a long way since our first working bee 4 years ago.

24.01.2022 Yesterday morning we were pleasantly surprised to discover that a new native bee hive had been installed. The hive at Beacon Hill Primary School was super healthy so, when it was split, we were the lucky recipients. Thanks so much to Murray Watts and Permaculture Northern Beaches for sorting this out for us.

23.01.2022 Lots of happy helpers - with a lot of new people recently joining our garden community.

23.01.2022 Harvesting beetroot, removing scale from the Native Guava bush, digging in compost and watering the potato patch.

21.01.2022 Slowly but surely the kiwifruit plants are coming back to life - even the one that we thought had died. The male plant and (so far) one of the females have started forming flower buds!

21.01.2022 So much better than store bought!

20.01.2022 The broad bean harvest has now begun. And, happily, no aphids yet!

20.01.2022 Getting artistic at yesterday's working bee!

20.01.2022 Spring flowers at the garden.

20.01.2022 Does anyone have mature compost that needs a good home? We've run out of compost at the garden and still have a lot of beds that need to be replenished before spring planting. Please send us a message if you can spare some of your compost that's ready to be used. Thanks!

19.01.2022 Lots of flowers and a few asparagus shoots.

17.01.2022 New growth on the Black Genoa fig tree.

17.01.2022 It's tomato planting time!

17.01.2022 We keep mounding those potato plants. Hopefully there'll be a bumper crop!

17.01.2022 Yesterday we planted a few more tomato plants and a teepee full of snake beans.

16.01.2022 On Saturday we continued our war against the ants farming aphids on our lime tree. Corn flour was sprinkled around the base and in the forks of the tree to try to deter them. However, this week's rain won't have helped our efforts.

16.01.2022 Some of the corn has started to tassle far too early. This is likely a sign of stress, but we're not sure why. They've been given plenty of water and nutrients. Does anyone have any experience with this or ideas about why this might have happened?

15.01.2022 We just finished planting nearly 60 Golden Bantam Sweet Corn seedlings.

15.01.2022 Plant care for the lilly pilly tree suggested pruning about 3 times a year. On Saturday, ours got pruned for the first time since it was planted (in autumn 2018)!

14.01.2022 It's time for the last of the purple sprouting broccoli to go. We've battled with cabbage moth caterpillars and aphids all season and there were only leaves to harvest. A bit ironic that one of the (aphid-infested) plants was finally starting to sprout.

14.01.2022 It's exciting to see so many plants thriving in spring!

13.01.2022 Lovely to see the basil starting to emerge.

12.01.2022 Just a solitary ibis at the garden during Saturday's working bee.

12.01.2022 On Wednesday we harvested our first zucchini of the season. There were also beans, carrots, beetroot, strawberries and a giant watermelon radish!

11.01.2022 Spring flowers at the garden! Lavender, cosmos, borage and ... not sure. Anyone know what those orange and yellow flowers are?

11.01.2022 We're loving the fact that one of our members appears to have limitless energy levels and is obsessed with keeping things neat. His project for Saturday was tidying up the piles of ANL soil - and mulching the sunflower plants that mysteriously appeared in one of the piles.

10.01.2022 All of a sudden most of the onions were ready to harvest! Sadly, some that hadn't bulbed yet had developed rust so also needed to be pulled, but they'll still taste great used like bunching onions.

09.01.2022 We've been battling with aphids on our Tahitian lime tree for months. On Saturday we discovered some ladybird larvae and a parasitic wasp, so we're hoping they may be more successful at combat than we've been. We added a couple of rings of chalk around the trunk (as a short term attempt) to try to deter more ants from arriving to farm the aphids.

09.01.2022 (Beneficial) parasitic wasps on the purple sprouting broccoli leaves - though we never got any sprouts!)

08.01.2022 Scarlet Runner and Blue Lake climbing beans.

07.01.2022 Planting, weeding, topping up beds with compost - there's always something to be done at the garden.

07.01.2022 Gorgeous feijoa and pomegranate flowers. If we're lucky, we might even get a few fruit this year.

07.01.2022 Harvesting silverbeet and kale, more potato mounding and the last of the cool season green manure crops chopped back.

07.01.2022 The resident blue tongue lizard appears to have damaged his front right leg.

06.01.2022 It's finally time to start harvesting the onions! It's been a long haul, with seeds planted in trays in early February and seedlings transferred to beds in late May. The mini purplette variety is similar to a leek, as you can also eat the "stalk".

06.01.2022 One of the passionfruit vines is absolutely thriving. Sadly, the other vines are either dead or doing poorly (and most were already replaced last year). The soil conditions should be the same for all plants. Maybe the happy plant gets better access to sunlight? Or perhaps it's the variety of passionfruit?

05.01.2022 The pomegranate tree is full of leaves and starting to bloom.

05.01.2022 Busy workers around the garden.

05.01.2022 Emily is looking for someone in North Curl Curl who is willing to have a honey beehive in their backyard. We were considering one at the garden, but it seems like Council isn't keen on the idea. I believe she would care for the hive and share the honey. She's got a few jars left that she's selling if you want to sample before committing. Please contact her via her FB page. https://www.facebook.com/curlcurlhoney/

05.01.2022 We pulled out the bolted baby spinach and planted a green manure crop of white millet and mung beans.

04.01.2022 We're going through a lot of compost, topping up beds in preparation for spring planting.

03.01.2022 Spring planting - watermelon, eggplants, bush and climbing beans...

03.01.2022 Healthy broadbean plants, another bed ready for spring planting, native raspberries, florence fennel and nearly the end of snow pea crop.

03.01.2022 The ongoing battle with aphids on our lime and lemon trees. Especially with the recent rain, chalk and cornflour to combat the ants hasn't had much impact. So on Saturday we sprayed the lime with eco-oil and the lemon with water.

03.01.2022 Besides onions, there was plenty of other harvest last Saturday.

02.01.2022 We discovered barnacle scale on the finger lime tree as well.

02.01.2022 This morning we continued hilling the potatoes, which had grown an incredible amount in the past week! We also planted a row of bush beans between the potato patch and the recently planted flower meadow. We're still waiting for something besides compost tomato and pumpkin seedlings to emerge there!

02.01.2022 It's been quite the season for aphids at the garden - in all shapes and colours! Some of the scarlet runner beans were even coated with them. Fortunately, some beneficial insects are starting to try to keep a few of them under control.

01.01.2022 We removed most of the flower buds from the lemon tree - partly so that the tree can focus on vegetative growth, rather than flowers and fruit, but also because they were covered with aphids!
