25.01.2022 We are asking students to wear red clothes on Friday 30th October to support Day for Daniel. No donation required. Day for Daniel is Australia’s largest day of action to raise awareness of child safety, protection, and harm prevention.

24.01.2022 The students representing Currajong in the Green STEM collaboration worked together with students from five other local schools, putting their self designed and made marine debris tools to the test! Needless to say their tools worked amazingly as the Green STEM students managed to pick up a total of 928 pieces of marine debris off the beach and sand dunes at Rowes Bay, including 186 cigarette butts and over 400 pieces of plastic. The students then sorted the marine debris and collected the data which will be sent to the Tangaroa Blue Foundation as part of their Reefclean community clean-up.

23.01.2022 Just a reminder that school photos are this Wednesday and Thursday. The schedule was emailed last week. Students in the choir need to meet in the music room at 8:00am to change into their choir shirts for their photo. Please ensure that your children are in full school uniform including black shorts (and black shoes for choir students). Please contact the office for any queries.

22.01.2022 Epic day at the TGS Lego robotics competition with the Currajong team of Lego legends! Students had to build and code a building of the future, it had to be sustainable, durable and accessible. Our team ensured all parts of their build were wheelchair accessible including the second level, building and coding an elevator. They had solar panels and a wind generator to power the building, topping it off with a garden to make it sustainable. It was super durable, so much so it is going to be standing in the Grammar junior library for the next while so their students can have look at all the awesome designs. 13 other schools competed and it was fantastic to get back to some interschool competition. We are already looking forward to our next robotics competition in week 10.

21.01.2022 It was an epic Monday afternoon at the interschool robotics competition held at Annandale Christian College. Our teams competed in three rounds with some very challenging tropical themed tasks. Students maneuvered their Riley Rover Robots through the course by coding the tank motors and incorporated the use of colour and ultrasonic sensors as well as the gripper attachment to help complete the tasks. Our teams came 6th and 9th respectively and both teams achieved maximum points for their team work mark on the score sheet. They represented our school proudly, showcasing our values of being respectful, resilient and curious!

21.01.2022 Our last video for the term! We hope you’ve been enjoying them! This is our recent NAIDOC Celebration Day which was #totallydeadly and another example of our awesome #curraculture

16.01.2022 Grade 4 have been working on and creating a Pinball Machine, and with a dream of most students, to actually have a real pinball at school to help them with their designs. The unit in Design Technology had the students making their own working 3D pinball, being influenced by all the bells and whistles of the real thing. The article below is from this week’s Townsville Bulletin.

15.01.2022 CSS NAIDOC CULMINATING CEREMONY VIDEO IS LIVE! https://youtu.be/CvA6lXIIIzc Due to COVID19 restrictions, our normal NAIDOC culminating ceremony that we hold in the hall with our whole learning community including students, teachers, parents, grandparents and relatives has had to change. To still give these important stakeholders a chance to participate and watch our NAIDOC culminating ceremony, the Currajong NAIDOC committee has put together a digital online ceremony that f...amilies and friends can watch together in their own time. The video starts with an acknowledgement to country and introduction from Aunty Dorothy Savage. A local Townsville artist, named Wesley Stubbings, who has painted a number of murals at Currajong State School explains his murals and the Dreamtime story that inspired them. The Ignatius Park cultural dancers, including three past Currajong students, share their message and cultural Island dances. Our 2020 Cultural Leader, JJ, shares his thoughts on the 2020 NAIDOC theme, Always was, Always will be as well as extending a thank you message to those that have gone above and beyond to make the NAIDOC celebrations our best yet. The ceremony finishes with everyone getting up out of their seats and dancing without shame to Baker Boy’s Marryuna. Get those dance moves ready! On behalf of the Currajong NAIDOC committee we hope you enjoy our digital online ceremony however we look forward to celebrating with you all in the hall again next year.

13.01.2022 Lest we forget.

12.01.2022 Learning about Life Cycles is 'for the birds' Grade 2 were lucky enough to have Mr Murphy from Belgian Gardens School visit to explain the Life Cycle of Sea Turtles. The students found it very interesting that the temperature of the sand determines if the hatchling will be male or female but when Shadow, Mr Murphy's bird, was allowed to check the work they were doing things got a whole lot more fun! The students that had their worked nibbled on by Shadow felt privileged and now have an excuse that no one would normally believe, a bird ate my homework!

12.01.2022 Students may wear purple on Friday as part of our focus on Mental Health Week. There is no donation required. We have little challenges and activities each day for the students and staff as part of our focus on this important topic.

11.01.2022 4F are proud new mums and dads with the happy arrival of this cute chick overnight. Hopefully they will be able to see some of its brothers and sisters cracking their way through in the next day or two. 4F's amazing students are studying 'Life Cycles' this term and have had the wonderful experience of seeing this first hand. Now they are contemplating which comes first... the Chicken or the Egg?

10.01.2022 Last week, our Green STEM students did some 'Citizen Science', collecting data on the sea grass beds at Rowes Bay to be sent to Cairns and included in the sea grass database. Scientists use this data to evaluate the changes to these beds over years and decades to assist in monitoring their health due to how important they are to the ecosystem. They also coded drones to complete a turtle nesting challenge. Overall it was a fun yet very educational day!

04.01.2022 Having trouble doing home reading with your child? Not sure if you’re doing it right? Here are some tips for parents from our learning support teacher Mrs Tiffany Calvert when reading with your child: 1. Sit side-by-side with your child. 2. Don’t ‘tell’ the words let the child have a go at working it out themselves. If the child still cannot work it out, tell them the word, and then go and re-read the sentence to encourage using the new word in context.... 3. Move beyond ‘sound it out.’ What word would make sense? Are there any parts of the word that they already know? (e.g. in/to) Take a ‘run-up’ at the word using the first sound. 4. Have your child re-read some passages for fluency. 5. Allow some mistakes to go uncorrected. 6. Allow the same book multiple times. 7. Keep reading to your child. An excellent demonstration video is available at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=korfvEOQb14 Any questions please don’t hesitate to contact our learning support teacher Mrs Tiffany Calvert at [email protected]

04.01.2022 High school bound! Late last term, our year six cohort of students and teachers visited Heatley Secondary College as an insight to what a day in the life of a high school student entails. The students participated in physical education, industrial technology and art classes and started to really get a feel for transitioning to high school. We wish our year six cohort an awesome last term at Currajong. Thanks to the staff at Heatley Secondary College for organising such great opportunities!
