22.01.2022 WARNING: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are warned that the photograph below may contain images of deceased persons which may cause sadness or distress. In 1905, the Western Australian government introduced the Aborigines Act: An Act to make provision for the better protection and care of the Aboriginal inhabitants of Western Australia. Governing the lives of Aboriginal people in WA for nearly 60 years, it placed all people of Aboriginal descent in a rejecte...d section of Australian society, prohibiting them from entering certain rural towns as well as Perth. It was also the beginnings of the Stolen Generations. Aboriginal children were forcibly separated from their natural parents and placed in institutions like the Carrolup Native Settlement in WA's Great Southern region. Over the next few months, our team will be sharing stories about the children of Carrolup and the unique artworks they created there. Follow our dedicated Truth-telling Facebook page, bit.ly/33grh85, or find out more information at curtin.edu/yah3nr. 11.01.2022 In 1970, I was taken from my family. I was three years old. I still remember it like it was yesterday. - Tony Hansen No one should have this for a childhood memory. But sadly, thousands do.... These are the memories of the Stolen Generations children who were forcibly removed from their families and placed in settlements across Australia. Now is the time for us to honour these children through the establishment of the Carrolup Centre for Truth-telling. This inclusive space will house the artworks of children from the Carrolup Native Settlement and aims to foster truth-telling and understanding of our shared history through programs and knowledge sharing on the lasting impact of marginalisation. These memories cannot be changed, but with your help, they can be shared with the community and future generations to ensure these children are never forgotten and that these circumstances are never repeated. To support the Centre, please visit curtin.edu/tsc1kn. The incredible Carrolup artworks will be on display at the John Curtin Gallery at Curtin University from 8 November to 13 December. #CurtinUniversity #CarrolupCentreforTruthtelling #CarrolupCentre #Carrolupart #Indigenous #Reconciliation #Aboriginal #WesternAustralia #Aboriginalart #Noongar #Nyungar Image: Tony as a child.
