24.01.2022 Alia Leadabrand was a long standing successful commercial artist before finding herself evolving away from her commercial practise and towards conceptual fine art strategies. Alia embraced her studies at Curtin, using new techniques to connect with some of life's difficult truths through her art. ‘''Don’t ever have children; they tear your life away'', is an attempt to use my art practice to work through, not despite, the pervasive disquiet of childhood trauma. Tracy Emin’s d...irect approach of addressing trauma emboldened this project, while I drew inspiration from the gestural richness of varied stimulative influences. I have used the documentary conventions of candid and portrait family photography as a foundation to paint from. Employing erasure, masking, and colour symbolism, I create metaphorical connections to familial ruminations. Through this series, I confront resentments and reconcile with fundamental losses of self. For those who relate to this experience, I hope to offer a sense of understanding, empathy, and connection.’ Alia Leadabrand @aliaartworks

20.01.2022 The 2020 Degree Show is open from this Saturday 5th December until Tuesday 9th December. 3yrd year student @matt_powerchord will have his work exhibited - Sleep Identities and Physicalities. This body of work explores the physicality of the sleeping figure, and the characteristics of the body at rest, for which I photographed several participants as painting subjects. The ‘staged’ nature of the poses - in that the majority of models/subjects were not actually asleep - is a s...ubtle element of performance. Many of these poses are combined into compositions that consider the states of sleeping, dreaming and waking. A limited colour palette is used, to create an appropriate atmosphere and cohesion throughout the works. The series builds on the long-established tradition of depicting sleeping figures in both historical and contemporary art. Conceptually and technically, elements of portraiture (including some self-portraiture), romanticism and surrealism have helped to inform the ways in which I have produced the work. 19.01.2022 Megan Baker is an interdisciplinary artist. Their current body of work is building towards throwing a pity party for themself to reflect and respond to the complex experiences of living as a disabled person in a society so rampant with ableism. Their practice more broadly explores their own experiences and identity through a variety of lens. Creating work in the realm of video, performance, textiles, sculpture and beyond. Only 3 more sleeps until the 2020 Degree Show..... We hope to see you all from Saturday 5th to Tuesday 9th December, between 10-4pm at Curtin University.
19.01.2022 #Repost @coolchangecontemporary with @make_repost EOI CALLOUT - EXHIBITIONS, RESIDENCIES, SCREENINGS DEADLINE: MIDNIGHT WEDNESDAY 20 JANUARY 2021... Cool Change Contemporary acknowledges that the lands we operate on are the traditional lands of the Whadjuk Noongar Bibbulmun people, custodians of Noongar Bibbulmun Boodjar. We stand as allies in the national debate regarding Indigenous Sovereignty. Always was, always will be Aboriginal land. With the announcement of our fifth callout, we seek to nurture artists, build solidarity, and develop a stronger network that sustains our communities long-term. We invite expressions of interest from artists, curators, producers and collectives across art forms to facilitate exhibitions, residencies and film screenings between April and July 2021. In particular, we enthusiastically welcome proposals from First Nations practitioners and practitioners of colour; and those working regionally, interstate or internationally. We invite First Nations voices to the forefront of our program, to set the conversation and the intentions of this space. Simultaneously, we understand that putting in an EOI can be a daunting process for many people, please reach out to us to chat with any of our staff if you have any questions or require any assistance. We recognise the responsibilities we have as an arts organisation to elevate the voices of our communities with authenticity, and as such strive to have an active role in restructuring how an art space functions. With support from the Australia Council for the Arts (@auscouncilarts), we are directing our recent project funding towards reducing the financial pressures that self-funded creative outcomes pose to independent artists. Specifically, we are removing the exhibition and residency hire fees for Cool Change’s current artistic program. This has been central to our vision as an organisation to broaden the accessibility of our platform. If you experience barriers to meeting the requirements of our proposal or program structure, please contact us to discuss this further. See our website for further details regarding this EOI: www.coolchange.net.au/apply/ See more
