24.01.2022 6 WAYS TO BE AN LGBTQIA+ ALLY 1. Listen and stay informed. Do your own research and don’t expect queer people to educate you. 2. Don't assume that all your friends, classmates, and co-workers are straight. Someone close to you could be looking for support in their coming-out process. Not making assumptions will give them the space they need.... 3. Respect pronouns and use gender neutral language, like asking if someone has a partner instead of a boyfriend/girlfriend. 4. Confront your own prejudices and bias, even if it is uncomfortable to do so. 5. Defend your LGBTQIA+ friends against discrimination. Support the community as much as you can and stand up when someone says or does something queerphobic, even if your LGBTQIA+ friends aren’t present. 6. Believe that all people, regardless of gender identity and sexual orientation, should be treated with dignity and respect. 19.01.2022 UNGRADED PASS FOR SEMESTER 2! We can confirm that the Opt-In Ungraded pass will be available to students in Semester 2 2020 after you receive your grades. All students will receive final grades as usual, but for affected study periods students who have passed their unit will have the option of either accepting their grade/mark, or accepting a pass for the unit. This will be available within units except where a grade/mark is essential (e.g. Honours units). After the final mar...ks have been released, students can, on an individual basis, request that the University replaces their mark with a ‘P’ (pass) designation that does not count towards their semester and course weighted averages. Check your Official Communication Channel on OASIS for steps to apply when you receive your grades. Please contact Curtin Connect if you have any questions. #CurtinGuild #CurtinUniversity #Results

18.01.2022 BLENDED LEARNING AT CURTIN Curtin University has released plans to move into what they are calling a ‘Blended Learning’ model of teaching and learning. Among these plans are the following changes:... Face-to-face learning being scaled back with every unit becoming 30% online and 70% in-person; All lectures to be replaced with multiple 15 minute short videos called ‘CurtinTalks’; Limiting each unit to only have 3 assessments. Large group sessions will be scheduled 3 times per unit per study period. And this all comes at a time when $41 Million worth of staff redundancies are also being pushed through. In a time of significant stress for staff and students, Curtin University continues to undermine its core operation of Teaching and Learning. These changes aren't to innovate our education, they are to protect Curtin's bottom line and cut costs. Students are the losers here. Is this what we pay our tuition fees for? The Guild only supports online lectures when students also have the option of attending face-to-face lectures as well. Online lectures can work when the content is relevant, up to date and when courses also have authentic face-to-face engagement through labs, workshops and tutorials. Your student representatives have been advocating for positive change in all learning environments to ensure that you have a good quality, fair and accessible education. While some of the changes outlined in the document could benefit students - such as more authentic assessment design, more opportunities to work with industry, and the phasing out of closed book examinations - today we share the sentiment among staff and students who are angry and concerned about what the overall proposal will mean. We will continue to fight to ensure that you get the education you pay for. That you do not lose out on a quality university experience. If you have something to say about this proposal, we’ve set up a submission portal and we’ll be presenting your opinions to the university. bit.ly/curtin-learning Read the full ABC article here: www.abc.net.au//curtin-university-in-wa-phasing-o/12923772 #myfeesmyfuture

06.01.2022 Hi Friends. Today I will be stepping out of the Guild Offices for the very last time after serving as your Guild President in 2020. While I can safely say that 2020 has been one of the most challenging years for the Curtin Student Guild (and for myself personally), I am exceedingly proud of the amount that our student union has achieved over the last 12 months in supporting the student experience at Curtin. This year we sought out fresh and innovative ways to interact with y...ou, we explored new and creative ways of pushing for positive change, and we thought of and implemented novel support systems for students doing it rough. We engaged in movements both on and off campus to push for a more just and equitable world. Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, throughout the transition to complete online study in Semester 1, throughout the Federal Government’s attacks on the higher education sector, and throughout the university’s incessant acts of austerity, the Guild persisted and continued to staunchly and tirelessly protect and advocate for students’ best interests. I am proud of the dedication and passion that our student representatives and the Guild's professional staff have demonstrated this year and I will be leaving this office satisfied that we spared no effort in pursuing the best outcomes for students. What I am proudest of, though, is the culture we’ve helped cultivate among students at Curtin, in which they feel emboldened to criticise decisions that are being made by university management and to question the status quo. We still have many battles to win as a student union, but I have complete faith that next year's reps team will take up the fight in an even bigger way. For now: farewell to you all. It's been a pleasure and an honour to serve you as Guild president and I will cherish my time as a part of the Curtin Student Guild forever. In solidarity, Hana Arai 2020 Guild President
