22.01.2022 The Desert Fireball Network has been working to use drones and machine learning to recover fallen meteorites across Australia. The team sucessfully demonstrated the neural network on a recent recovery expedition, after the meteorite was found! Check it out: https://arxiv.org/abs/2009.13852
21.01.2022 Another one of our superstar PhD students has scored an internship at NASA! Pictured is SSTC PhD student Seamus Anderson and a team of fellow students performing an experiment to study regolith flow and behaviour on asteroid-like surfaces in micro-gravity. "Im really excited to explore how exo-planet atmospheres could form under conditions totally different from Earths. The kinds of experiments well be performing will also have implications as to what useful materials we c...ould extract from asteroids in our own solar system!" Seamus said. Were so excited to see where this opportunity takes him! Congrats Seamus.

Thanks to Curtin HIVE for having us, and Katarina Miljkovic, Seamus Anderson, Lucy Forman-Arnel, Ellie Sansom, Raiza Quintero and Anthony Lagain for running the day.
18.01.2022 We're launching satellites that you can hold in the palm of your hand. Did you know that while the US laid claim to imparting the first footprints on its dus...ty surface, it was thanks to Australian technology that the world was able to witness it? Australia still plays a pivotal role in space exploration and our #CurtinResearch Space Science and Technology Centre leads this ambition. Ever heard of a CubeSat? We've built one. Change is here, discover more: http://curtin.edu/x6nc2n #CurtinChangeIsHere #PlanetarySciences
17.01.2022 Did you know this mini satellite is the size of a sandwich? Despite its small size, its set to make big advances in space exploration. Professor Phil Bland from the Space Science and Technology Centre explains. #AskAnExpert #CurtinResearch

15.01.2022 Check out the amazing research that goes on at SSTC! Using years of impact data collected by the Desert Fireball Network, PhD candidate Patrick Shober and the team have generated a model to understand how small debris has close encounters with the Earth. The animation shows how they used the data to generate the artificial close encounters in the model. 15.01.2022 Inside a meteorite: this image shows what a meteorite looks like on the inside. We analyse cut surfaces to examine and identify the history of the meteorite. We analyse these surfaces with specialized equipment that allows us to visualize how the chemical elements are distributed across the surface. By looking at this distribution and noting if there are particular shapes associated with them, we are able to unravel what happened to the meteorite while it was still in space!... 09.01.2022 Dr Aaron Cavosie of the SSTC was featured in an article in the West Australian this weekend, about his studies of impact craters in Western Australia. From the article: Only 190 impact structures have been confirmed worldwide and 28 are in Australia. One of the most well-preserved is Wolfe Creek Crater, near Halls Creek. Curtin University Space Science and Technology Centre senior research fellow Aaron J. Cavosie PhD who is responsible for confirming one of these 28 structu...res admitted he was bonkers obsessed with Australian craters like Wolfe Creek. At best estimate, this crater is about 300,000 years old, he said. Because its relatively young, its really well preserved. Its this beautiful structure that when you go there and walk along the rim it seems it can go on for eternity. Pictured is an aerial shot of the Wolfe Creek Crater, courtesy of the West Australian. 07.01.2022 What an honour to host The Honourable Kim Beazley AC, Governor of Western Australia to SSTC again. This time round we got to share world first data visualisations of craters on Mars, peek at the atoms of extraterrestrial materials and let the Governor hold one of our spacecraft! Our Binar Space Program is launching its first 100% WA designed and assembled small satellite in March 2021, and it was thrilling to exchange ideas around its significance for research, industry, defence and STEM. Not just for the future, but for today, here in WA. Thank you, Governor Beazley.
