24.01.2022 I Never Met a 7-Wood I Didn’t Like Have you hit a 7-wood lately? I speak to a lot of customers on a daily basis, most of which are looking on advice on what clubs they should use. If you fit customers, you should follow my example by listening carefully to what your customer needs because each golfer has certain preferences or likes or dislikes based on hitting certain clubs in the past. Therefore I don’t every like to generalize when it comes to fitting and why it is so im...portant that each golfer select the correct set make up based on their strengths. One of the most common complaints I hear from customers is, I can’t hit my longer irons (like a 3 and/or 4-iron). Hey, join the crowd! The first thing you think to ask is whether or not that had tried any of the new hybrids on the market and follow up by asking which ones as well. When they tell me they have tried these new-fangled hybrids and they do hit them better than the iron, then I revert to an option of the past. Ask them this next question, Do you hit your 5-wood well? If they say yes, which is often the case, now is the time to revisit the 7-wood. Oh, the lowly #7-wood. Remember what that was? You must not, because based on sales over the past several years the #7-wood has gradually sold less and less as manufactures and the media have tempted you with the hybrid as an answer to your problems. Long before there were hybrids, there were high lofted fairway woods. The #7-wood became a good replacement for a 3-iron. The large head and higher loft made this an easy club to hit high and straight. The length is not unlike many #3 hybrids on the market which is manageable to provide solidness of contact and confidence at address. For many men out there, don’t let your ego get in the way of putting a club in your bag that can increase your chances of improving your score. No matter how much ribbing you may get from your playing partners, the #7-wood is perfectly legal and a viable alternative to a #3-irons and /or hybrid. At Custom Fit Golf, we have a range to choose from. The #9-wood (yes, they make those too) make a good alternative to a #4-iron and/or hybrid. I had foregone the #3-iron many years ago and like many fellow golfers have dabbled with various hybrids to ensure I had a club in my bag for a specific distance. But over all these years I can say that the 7-wood has been a staple in my arsenal and usually that one go-to club I could rely on regardless of which model I have used. That is why I have said many times over that I haven’t met a 7-wood I didn’t like. See more

23.01.2022 Which Golf Clubs are the Most Difficult to Hit? Club Set We did a survey of golfers on our website and the results are in. While it is neck-and-neck between driver, 3 fairway wood and long irons, 75% of our golfers said one of those clubs are the most difficult to hit! So now the question is why?... Longer Clubs Mean More Inconsistency The driver is the longest club in your bag while the 3 wood is the next longest. In our fittings, the driver is usually the most difficult club to fit, mostly because it is the longest and lightest club in the bag. If you don’t get the shaft weight, length, flex and swing weight right, shots will be inconsistent at best. This goes for both driver and fairway woods. That is why we recommend shorter driver shafts, i.e. 44.5 versus industry standard 45 to 45.5. Check the impact area on the face of your driver. If you are hitting mostly center to heel, your driver could be too long and/or light. Shafts Weights Are Not Consistent Typically an off-the-rack driver shaft will weigh 55 to 65 grams. That will fit the majority of male golfers, however, when you get to a 3 fairway wood, the shaft weight, especially for stronger, more aggressive swings, should increase by roughly 10 grams. Most off-the-rack fairway woods have the same shaft weight as the corresponding driver, which could be too light for both male and female golfers. Longer Irons Need More Forgiving Heads Even the touring professionals are playing more forgiving heads in their longer irons. We do a lot of combination sets where the 4,5 and 6 iron will be like a PXG GEN2 0311P and the 7-PW will be the 0311T. And, if you are really struggling with long irons, it is time to consider switching to hybrids. So bottom line: Play a shorter driver, make sure your fairway woods have a heavier shaft than your driver, and consider hybrids to replace your longer irons! Oh, and make sure you get properly fit for all of these clubs.

21.01.2022 KBS Introduces Graphite Iron Shafts KBS TGI Tour Graphite Irons Following on the heels of the very successful launch of the KBS Tour Prototype Hybrid Graphite shafts, KBS has released the new KBS TGI Tour Graphite Iron shafts. These shafts are designed to play very similar to their KBS Steel counterparts, with the same Elasticity Index.... Available in 50, 60, 70 and 80 gram weights The good news is that now we have something to fit golfers from juniors needing a lighter weight shaft (50 or 60 gram) to stronger players needing slightly heavier shafts (70 or 80 grams). TGI Tour Graphite 50 Best for beginner golfers with slow swing speeds and juniors. TGI Tour Graphite 60 Juniors transitioning from US Kids and slower swing speed adults. TGI Tour Graphite 70 Juniors, medium swing speed adults with smooth transitions. TGI Tour Graphite 80 Medium swing speed adults wanting higher ball flight. Each weight is its own flex The 50 gram shaft is the softest flex, roughly a Ladies flex. The 60 gram shaft would be designated as A (Senior flex). The 70 gram shaft would be roughly a Men’s Regular flex and the 80 gram shaft would be designated as a Men’s Stiff flex. This is a little misleading as we can literally build multiple flexes from each shaft with some overlap. From a club builders perspective, these shafts come in a parallel tip (.370 inches) with a long tipping section. This means we can build a variety of flexes in each weight. The larger tip section follows the design of most game improvement iron and hybrid heads which have a .370 inch hosel diameter. Shaft Trajectory and Spin: High to Mid-High These shafts have a tip section that creates a higher trajectory and higher spin. The profile of the KBS TGI is very similar to the KBS Tour 90 steel shaft. This is really a very good design as most golfers playing lighter weight shafts in their irons are looking for more height in their shots. Again, from a club builders perspective, we can modify the trajectory slightly lower or higher by how we trim the shafts to get to a specific flex when building the clubs.

19.01.2022 Solving the Hybrid Vs. Long Iron Fitting Dilemma Solving the hybrid vs. long iron fitting dilemma should not be a difficult decision. In general there are a couple of factors to consider. First, how comfortable is the golfer in hitting hybrid clubs? I would say 20-30% of our golfers going through a fitting have trouble hitting their hybrids consistently. Usually, it is because of the fact that the hybrids are not very well fit to them in terms of shaft flex and weight. Un...fortunately, sometimes this becomes a mental block that is difficult to overcome. We get past that by having the golfer hit a hybrid that is matched to their swing and compare it to their existing hybrid. This usually gets rid of the fear factor! Second, how well does the golfer hit their long(er) irons? This is a little bit of a trick question as most golfers want to keep a longer iron, like a 4 or 5 iron, in their bag to get out of trouble if they are under a tree branch. But that is a total waste of a club. I can easily knock down a 7 iron if I have to punch out. If the golfer only hits the longest iron in their bag consistently, 50% of the time, it is time to switch it out for a hybrid. This is especially true when the golfer is trying to hit the long(er) iron from a poor lie, the rough, or off the tee on a long par three. The hybrid will be much more forgiving and consistent, especially if it is properly fit! Be careful trying to replace a fairway wood with a hybrid. Sometimes our golfers are very comfortable with their hybrids and want to try to replace their 5 wood with a 3 hybrid (18 or 19 degree loft). Not a bad consideration, but only if the golfer has enough club head speed to get the 3 hybrid in the air. Normally a 3 hybrid will not go the same distance as a 5 wood because the 3 hybrid has a shorter length. So be a little careful trying to go with too low of loft in the hybrids. In general, a properly fit hybrid will provide a lot more versatility than long irons in nearly every golfers bag. The only exception to this is that hybrid club usage on the PGA Tour is actually declining as more players are opting for driving irons when they need a more forgiving long iron. For me, my trusty 4 and 5 hybrids may be joined soon by a 6 hybrid! See more

18.01.2022 Take a Look At Heavier Graphite Shafts Are heavier graphite shafts for me? Lighter means you can automatically swing a club faster, right? Well, not so fast my friend, you might actually swing a heavier club faster. Before I will explain, let’s first breakdown the overall weight of a golf club, which consists of the sum total of the head, shaft and grip weights. You see most driver and iron heads weigh the same from one manufacturer to another and most grips, at least the s...Continue reading

18.01.2022 Wedges New Wedges? Make Sure You Have The Right Shafts. If you are thinking about getting new wedges, make sure you have the right shafts. What shafts should you play in your wedges? The very short answer is play the same shaft in your wedges as you do in your irons. But, boy do we see a lot of variation of what is in our players bags. Stock Wedge Shafts...Continue reading

17.01.2022 The truth and lies about proper club angles. The lie angle of your clubs needs to fit your game. It needs to take into account your body type, and any other factors that contribute to the way you swing. A proper fitting shouldn’t just be done when you buy a new set of clubs. Numerous other factors can change which will require the golf club to be adjusted. If the lie angle of your clubs isn’t matched to your swing mechanics, you are already making the game harder than it alr...eady is! As we’ve mentioned in a previous post, golfers are realizing how important driver fitting is to maximize proper ball flight. But this same attention needs to be equally addressed with your irons. Using equipment that does not fit the golfer could cause a push or pull; a chunk or skull; or make the golfer compensate their swing. Shaft flex also needs to be addressed. I have found that most golfers play a shaft that is too stiff, which also causes misdirection and swing compensations. The greater the loft of a club, the more effect the lie angle will have on the ball’s direction. Incorrect lie angles will start the ball more offline in higher lofted clubs, such as wedges, then it will in lower lofted clubs, such as drivers. That is why the proper lie angle with your irons it is so important: Once the ball is struck it starts to spin, and any directional problems will be exaggerated due to the ball spinning in the wrong direction. Cause and Effect For example, when the leading edge of a club’s face angle is pointing to the right of the target line (open for a right-handed golfer) and the club path is parallel to the direction the leading edge is pointing, the ball flight will result in a push and the ball will continue a path to the right of the target. (A great and inexpensive way to help you visualize where the ball will travel based on the position of your clubface is by using the Mitchell Golf Magnetic Lie Angle Pointer). A push is different than a slice as a slice will curve to the right where a push will stay on a straight path to the right. Fortunately, the lie of an iron can be changed to match the owner’s swing characteristics. It’s one of the first factors to consider when dealing with club performance and the cost to have a club’s angle changed is well worth the payoff in directional performance improvement.

16.01.2022 Is a Low Spin Golf Clubhead or Shaft Right For You? If you read through golf periodicals, forums and blogs, you will soon see there is so much emphasis of late that has been put on low spin for more distance. Why? Spin is necessary to create lift to the ball. This is the reason why there is a whole science devoted to the golf ball’s material, construction and dimple geometry. Even in clubhead design, the location of the center of gravity of the head helps to control how high...Continue reading

15.01.2022 Hit Your Fairway Woods More Consistently Here are a few pointers on how to hit your fairway woods more consistently. We are going to be talking about getting the right shaft, loft and model, not your swing technique. OK, maybe a little on swing technique. From a fitting perspective, most fairway woods that we test that are purchased off-the-rack have very inconsistent lengths, shaft weights and shaft flexes from one manufacturer to the next. Length: Fairway woods for male ...golfers range in length from 42.75 to 43.5 for a 3 wood. Each club gets progressively shorter by .5 to 1 as you go up in loft. If you are playing a 43 3 wood, a 5 wood should be no longer than 42.5. Getting the right length can help you hit the ball more consistently in the middle of the face, not on the heel (too long) or toe (too short). Shaft Weight: We see most stock shafts from manufacturers use the same weight of shaft in fairway woods as their driver models. Your fairway wood shafts should be slightly (5 to 15 grams) heavier than your driver shaft. So if you are playing a 65 gram driver shaft (noted by a numeral 6. 65, or some other designation on the shaft decal), your fairway woods should be 70 to 80 grams. This helps create a more consistent swing as the added weight creates a similar feel to your driver since the shaft in the fairway wood is 1 to 3 shorter than your driver shaft. Shaft Flex: The shaft flex in fairway woods should be slightly softer than the driver shaft and slightly stiffer than a hybrid. From a fitting perspective, we believe in progressive shaft weights and flexes in order to create a more consistent set of clubs. Most off the rack stock shafts in fairway woods are the same flex as the driver but actually test very flexible compared to the markings on the shaft. It is not uncommon for an R (men’s regular) flex shaft to test as soft as Senior or below. This will cause very inconsistent shots left and right as well as thin or fat shots. Head Loft: We are really seeing a trend of fitting to slightly higher lofts in our fairway woods these days. We fit more 4 woods (3 HL high loft) than 3 woods for men and a lot of times go directly from a driver to a 5 wood for ladies and juniors. This added loft actually increases carry distance as well as roll, and is more consistent both in contact and direction. So the bottom line is that if you are unhappy with the consistency of your fairway wood shots, get fit and make sure you have the correct length, shaft weight, shaft flex and head loft. 09.01.2022 What Happens When Golf Shafts Are Not Right For Your Swing We always advise you on what happens when golf shafts are not right for your swing. A lot of golfers that have never been through our fitting process, think that the majority of their miss-hits are caused by their swing. Fortunately, that is not always the case! I will make some predictions for misses based upon a right-handed golfer. Of course the swing direction makes a big impact. Let me summarize what we see...Continue reading
