24.01.2022 #TheoryThursday Are you one of the many people who use google to find out what is going on with you and any symptoms you may be having? We are all guilty of it, its like an instantaneous reaction....we have something crop up for us and we pull out our phones or hop on our computers and start typing away into that search bar.... Today, we thought we would share with you a blog around why you should not google your health symptoms and how it is dangerous to do so (aside from the immediate anxiety you get met with once you start getting your possible internet results) https://customeyecare.com.au/danger-of-self-diagnosing-eye/

23.01.2022 Are you having a problem with fog on your glasses, particularly during these times of mask wearing? We can help! Ask us about our Anti-Fog Coated lenses from Shamir!

23.01.2022 Did you know that in Australia, more than half of the population, that’s over 13 million, have a long-term vision disorder. Women make up most of the numbers affected. What are the reasons for these statistics? https://goodvisionforlife.com.au//women-in-australia-are/

22.01.2022 Our Darby Street location as it appeared a looong time ago! Darby St was then known as Lake Macquarie Rd. Eagle-eyed locals might even be able to identify still-existing buildings - anyone?

21.01.2022 Today we thought we would like to help you get to know a very familiar face here in the practice. It's Emily’s turn to shine! You guys would all know her in one capacity or another, and regularly are greeted in person or on the phone by her!! What is your favourite food?... Hands down, a good old peanut butter. I put it on anything and everything. What do you do that makes you truly happy? Helping people! Whether it be at work with our patients, my colleagues or my friends, my absolute purpose in life is to help others and add value any way I can. Who or what inspires you OR what gets you out of bed each day? Usually the sun. Haha, I'm an early riser, I like to be up and down with the sun each day. I'm inspired by knowledge. I love learning and am an absolute book worm. I'm not much of a fiction reader, I've been reading an odd combination Richard Brandsons biography and Stephan Hawkings Brief History of Time. What is your favourite quote and why? "Where focus goes, energy flows". I'm like a broken record with this one, I say is about 487 times a day. I'm a huge believer that the quality of your life reflects the quality of your mindset. Where there is what goes wrong, there is always what goes right, in any situation. It's a game of focus and that's wholey and soley in your power. What got you into optics and what do you love about your job at CEC? These people! I worked locally in coffee and have a background in psychology. I was offered a job with these fellow super nerds at CEC and loved the challenge. I loved jumping into something I had no idea about and learning everything I could. I now can't imagine my life without them, and I'm so grateful to have fallen into this little optics bubble and even more excited to see where I end up!

21.01.2022 The best way to enjoy Van Gogh's painting "The Starry Night" 1.- Look at the spiral for 20 seconds without looking away . 2.- Look at the painting, at the centre of the swirl in the sky. Tell us about your experience with this in the comments!!

16.01.2022 The many phases of COVID-19 here in practice.

14.01.2022 It is important to us here at Custom Eyecare that you know us as well as we know you! So we thought that we would share a bit about who we are as a Team and help you to get to know us better! To start us off with a jump we've got Kaz! Whats my fave food:... Eggs - i love eggs poached, scrambled, fried both sunny side up or down and boiled. It is not uncommon to see me eating egg and lettuce sandwiches in our lunch room. Yummy! What do I do that makes me truly happy: Motherhood has been my proudest achievement, so continuing to bond and experience a close relationship with my two beautiful girls for life makes me truly happy. Who or what truly inspires me and gets me out of bed in the morning: Simply life itself, the journey and step by step my own satisfaction in learning how to become a strong independent woman. My favourite quote and why: "Remember to be nice to everyone, even to those who may have hurt you, as the world will be a happier one". This quote rings true to me on many levels. What got me into optics and my favourite part of working at Custom CEC: I was looking for part time work when my girls were little 20 plus years ago, and a position to work in an Independent Optometry practice was advertised with the opportunity to study Optical dispensing. This aroused my interest in learning, and understanding the profession from the depth of the science behind it all, as i always enjoyed learning about anatomy in school. I was offered the position and completed my certificate that really helped me develop the required skills and understanding to this day on how to advise patients. My passion is still working in the independent environment as I do believe in "care " rather than "retail" is much more rewarding. Since working at Custom Eyecare, i have loved stepping into a practice that has so much emphasis on patient care. To the extreme, i am very proud to be part of this team who provide many options and specialty care for patients whom have eye conditions with very poor eyesight. The quality of service and product availability in helping all is next to none. The care continues in looking out for each other. I choose to travel one hour to Newcastle and one hour home daily, to be part of this professional and fun practice. My favourite role is purchasing quality, classic and funky frames for our customers to choose from. I thank Custom for allowing me to enjoy working in such a great practice.

13.01.2022 #fridayfunny MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE!

10.01.2022 #TheoryThursday Today Wes has obliged the staff here and gave us a video we are all curious about! He is going to talk to you today about FUCHS disease. Fuchs' dystrophy is a disease of the cornea. It is when cells in the corneal layer called the endothelium gradually die off.

09.01.2022 Are you growing out your stache for Movember?! We would love to see photos!! Movember is an annual event involving the growing of moustaches during the month of November to raise awareness of men's health issues, such as prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and men's suicide.

07.01.2022 TODAY IS HEIDIS BIRTHDAY!!! So to celebrate her, lets get to know her a bit better!! HAPPIEST OF BIRTHDAYS TO YOU!!!!! What is your favourite food?... Anything Asian. Laksa. Vietnamese. Curries. What do you do that makes you truly happy? Being a mum. I know that's cheesy but it's true. Who or what inspires you OR what gets you out of bed each day? I'm naturally pretty hard working so it doesn't take much to get me motivated. I really enjoy helping others and looking after people What is your favourite quote and why? Oh God. I don't have one. You get back from life what you put in? What got you into optics and what do you love about your job at CEC? My decision to become an optometrist was a bit of a process of exclusion. In Yr 12 I listed the occupations I was seriously considering. I had 4 uni degrees on the list and my year was the first time university preferences could be entered over the phone, and the automated system had 5 preferences. To add an extra choice to my list, I went through the uni guide and randomly found optometry. So it became #5. I spent some time doing work experience in my top 4 preferences and I just didn't love it. I then spent a day with a young driven female optometrist and I really liked the work. But to be sure, I then arranged to spend a day with the oldest male optometrist in the region I could find.... and I still loved it... so here I am. Helping people, caring about others and looking after the team is what I love about the job.

06.01.2022 What a special day today is! Our Holly is getting married!! CONGRATULATIONS HOLLY!! So in honour of that we thought we would help you get to know them better!... What is your favourite food? OH MAN I LOVE ALL FOOD! haha Honestly though, one of my fav things to do is cook. I am pretty much vegan but I def still love cheese. I love to experiment with different foods and explore all the flavours. What do you do that makes you truly happy? I love this question. I thoroughly am the happiest when I am helping someone break through barriers, discovering how powerful they are or experiencing that moment with them when they realise that its always been within themselves, but that they finally see it truly. Who or what inspires you? OR what gets you out of bed in the morning? Me. I get me up out of the bed everyday. I feel like it took me 30 years to discover who I was, and how awesome life was. Once I figured that out, I did not need anything else to get me inspired. I love who I am, how far I have come and how everyday is full of opportunity, lessons, experiences and those divine moments where we get the privilege to exist another day. What’s your favourite quote and why? "The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes" This is my fav because you can seek all the new landscapes you want to, but the real change exists in adjusting your perspective and your vision and YOU. The rest comes with it. What got you into optics and what’s your favourite part of working at CEC? So, back in America I needed a break from the 12 plus years I had spent in the Mental Health and Domestic violence sector I worked in and had just finished University and decided to just stop working. I honestly did not even realise that when I decided to look for a job that I had applied to Lens Crafters which is OPSM here in Australia. But, low and behold I got a call from them one day saying I had an interview. I went and ended up working in the lab there making specs and loved it. I then got asked if I wanted to be an Optometric Technician for the Optometrist's office attached to Lenscrafters, so I said yes and wound up becoming a weekend supervisor. And the rest is history! Once I had decided to settle in Newcastle I applied to CEC and landed in the best place ever! I LOVE working here. The staff are amazing, the work experience is super involved, growing and educational. I have loved being a tech here, as well as working behind the scenes and then eventually landing myself as the content creator and social media marketer. I got so lucky getting hired by them and for being here for over 2 years. Such a great place. <3

06.01.2022 Next up in our "Get to know our staff" lineup we have Meredith! She does a bit of behind the scenes work here at CEC so you may or may not recognise her face! Here is all things Meredith: ... What is your favourite food? Chocolate - particularly Turkish Delight, Marble and Pineapple flavours. What do you do that makes you truly happy? Teaching and educating kids and watching their glowing smiles when they have achieved and demonstrated their learning goals. Who or what inspires you? OR what gets you out of bed in the morning? Wanting to know what new thing I will learn today (and nice long hot showers in the cooler weather). What’s your favourite quote and why? "It's not about what it is. It's about what it can become" - Dr Seuss It is a simple analogy of ourselves here and now, and what we can grow and achieve in the future. (I enjoy all of Dr Seuss materials). What got you into optics and what’s your favourite part of working at CEC? Naturally trained as an educator, moved into a change for something new - spent a number of years working in ophthalmology and learnt so many different aspects of the eye. Returning to school to reacquaint myself to the reward of teaching I could not resist the opportunity to work within both fields - Custom EyeCare is the perfect place. I enjoy working in a practice that supports the importance of behavioral optometry and vision care for children and their future ("...what it becomes").

05.01.2022 Last but not least for our staff lineup we have our amazing Wes. What is your favourite food? Being made to pick a favourite food for a get to know me questionnaire is an ancient form of torture. That said, I’d struggle to turn down a Thai green curry!... What do you do that makes you truly happy? Learning new things excites me. And sharing that knowledge with others is also pretty cool. I feel there is so much to learn, and not enough time. There is nothing better than knowing things; why things work or how something comes about. Who or what inspires you? OR what gets you out of bed in the morning? Reluctantly, it is my alarm that gets me out of bed in the morning. What got you into optics and what’s your favourite part of working at CEC? Eyes are super cool. Super interesting. By a mile the coolest organ in the body. So the best profession to see lots of eyeballs is optometry! The Custom Eyecare staff (family) is what I love the most. Working is lots of fun if you enjoy who you work with.

05.01.2022 #TheoryThursday Today Wes is going to talk to you about Retinal Detachments and how that can affect you. A Retinal Detachment is considered an Emergency Eye Condition and is where tissue at the back of the eye pulls away from a layer of blood vessels that provide necessary oxygen and nourishment.... The appearance of many bits of debris (floaters), sudden flashes of light or a shadow in the vision field are symptoms. See more

03.01.2022 We've got some perfect gifts for Christmas.

02.01.2022 Make sure to use your health fund before Dec. 31st.

02.01.2022 #TheoryThursday Today we thought we would give you some fun facts around "Colour Blindness" or rather "Colour Deficiency". In Australia about 8% of males and 0.4% of females have a colour deficiency, which is around 550,000 people! ... Colour blindness is a usually a genetic (hereditary) condition (you are born with it). Red/green and blue colour blindness is usually passed down from your parents. The gene which is responsible for the condition is carried on the X chromosome and this is the reason why many more men are affected than women. The vast majority of people with a colour vision deficiency have inherited their condition from their mother, who is normally a ‘carrier’ but not colour blind herself. Some people also acquire the condition as a result of long-standing diseases such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis, some liver diseases and almost all eye diseases. The effects of colour vision deficiency can be mild, moderate or severe depending upon the defect. If you have inherited colour blindness your condition will stay the same throughout your life it won’t get any better or worse. The retina of the eye has two types of light-sensitive cells called rods and cones. Both are found in the retina which is the layer at the back of your eye which processes images. Rods work in low light conditions to help night vision, but cones work in daylight and are responsible for colour discrimination. There are three types of cone cells and each type has a different sensitivity to light wavelengths. One type of cone perceives blue light, another perceives green and the third perceives red. When you look at an object, light enters your eye and stimulates the cone cells. Your brain then interprets the signals from the cones cells so that you can see the colour of the object. The red, green and blue cones all work together allowing you to see the whole spectrum of colours. For example, when the red and blue cones are simulated in a certain way you will see the colour purple. One of the things we do with all new patients that are children is run the Ishihara on them, and if you need further testing we can do that. At Custom Eyecare we regularly test colour vision for maritime licences, electrical apprenticeships, NSW police, and various other occupational or employer groups. Our colour vision testing fee includes a written report and also a full general eye health and vision check at the same time. When you phone to make an appointment please ask for a colour vision test.
