25.01.2022 When it comes to an issue as endemic as violence against women, it is difficult to know where to start when you want to help. However, one simple way to start i...s to begin to examine cultural attitudes that may allow violence to go unchecked. Things like 'locker room talk', unhelpful tropes in media, and misogynistic jokes should not go unchallenged. Men can be an ally to women in challenging these among their coworkers, peers, and friends. It may be unpopular, but it indicates to men in your life that you don't tolerate disrespect to women, and indicates to the women in your life that you're a safe person. Take your respect for women beyond opening doors, and ask them about behaviours that make them feel unsafe, and how you can best be an ally to them in dismantling unhelpful traditional attitudes. When these rural women are victims of domestic violence, they often don't have access to necessary resources and support. Everyone should have the right to a life free from violence or threat of violence, but this is sadly not the reality for many people in all parts of the world. The resources we've produced for you over the last 16 days can and should be used all year.
