22.01.2022 A message to Australians from Her Majesty The Queen. At a time when people across the Commonwealth are experiencing a profound and rapid change to their lives,... the pain of lost loved ones, and an understandable concern about the future, my thoughts are with all Australians. Whilst it can be difficult to remain hopeful in such challenging times, especially following the summer's devastating bushfires and recent flooding, I am confident that the stoic and resilient nature of the Australian people will rise to the challenge. I extend my sincere admiration to the many Australians who work tirelessly to help those affected, provide essential services for their fellow citizens, and continue to care for the most vulnerable. You will remain in my prayers in the coming months, with the resolute knowledge that with hard work, faith and unity, we will rise to the challenges ahead and ensure the health and vitality of all Australia's communities. I send my thanks and warmest good wishes to you all. Elizabeth R The Royal Family The message is available at www.gg.gov.au

19.01.2022 I was delighted to be asked to facilitate the delivery of this beautiful gift to Her Majesty The Queen, on behalf of the remarkable women from the Babbarra Wome...n's Centre in Maningrida. The three silk fabrics are designed and hand-printed by women at the centre. Each telling a significant cultural story about the Arnhem Land region where they live and work. They have chosen to send Her Majesty this gift to recognise her flair for fashion and her commitment to supporting women and girls across the Commonwealth. Ladies, it is my absolute honour to see that this special delivery makes its way from the remote community of Maningrida, in the Northern Territory to Buckingham Place, London.

18.01.2022 Looking forward to the literacy festival on Tuesday! Remember to bring any old books you may no longer want for the book swap

17.01.2022 Destroyers, From a really early age, women get harassed by men. We've all been there. Online, on the streets. Now there's a project to find out exactly how bad ...it is in Australia. University of Melbourne researcher Bianca Fileborn wants to hear from you. As she says: "Street harassment is a very common and often-harmful experience. However, it is rarely responded to through policy or legislation. This research aims to understand how people who have experienced street harassment would like it to be responded to, so that this information can be used to inform the development of any responses." HERE’S THE LINK to information about the research. https://www.streetharassmentjustice.com/information HERE'S HOW YOU VOLUNTEER. https://www.streetharassmentjustice.com/contact And of course, some of us have developed our own responses. Take Australian explorer Jade Hameister. She had a special response for all the men who commented on her TEDx talk. Destroyers, how have you responded to harassment, online or on the streets? 16.01.2022 Happy World Rural Women’s Day!

16.01.2022 Today is World Health Day. This year, the World Health Organization (WHO) is honouring the amazing contribution that nurses and midwives make to our communities.... In the Northern Territory, our nurses and midwives work in some of the most remote parts of the country providing care, support, friendship and education to keep Territorians healthy. Right now, nurses and other healthcare workers are on the frontline in hospitals and clinics around the world in response to the COVID-19 crisis. They are not only providing critical care and support to the sick but are also providing comfort and reassurance to their own families, friends and the broader community in a time of fear and uncertainty. Thank you, to nurses, midwives and all healthcare workers for the invaluable work you do.

14.01.2022 Congratulations! Daly River elder Miriam-Rose Ungunmerr Baumann has been named the 2021 Senior Australian of the Year. The 73-year-old, who was the NT's firs...t fully qualified Aboriginal teacher, has been honoured for her lifetime commitment to bettering education in the NT. In 2013, she established the Miriam Rose Foundation, which the judges said helped bridge the divide between Aboriginal culture and mainstream society, driving reconciliation at a grassroots level. Incredible! Well done, Miriam-Rose

14.01.2022 This is Dolly Garinyi. She was called ‘Corporal Dolly’ because she was the leader of a group of young Aboriginal women who worked at the Australian Women’s Army... Service (AWAS) Barracks at Adelaide River during the Second World War. These young women, under the guidance of Dolly, did all the heavy work around the barracks the cleaning, laundry and yard work. They were important to the smooth running of the barracks, and they went about their work with a will. On a tour of inspection, Lieutenant-Colonel Eileen Parry made the point that she had never seen such well-laundered uniforms. The women enjoyed their work, and at the end of each day they said farewell with great ceremony, crying Good-bye, Madam as the truck moved off. Reports of the time were condescending towards Dolly, claiming she had her own ideas of regimental dress, wearing her stripes on the front of her uniform, and her colour patches she coyly wore on her shoulder strap. But Dolly was a woman of great substance. Dolly Garinyi was a Larrakia woman, a senior custodian of traditional knowledge, and a key figure in the Larrakia land rights movement of the 1970s. She was born around 1905 and so by the time she was evacuated from Darwin to Adelaide River, where she worked at the AWAS Barracks, she was already in her later 30s. We find her at Bagot in the early 1950s, dancing at a burnim-rag ceremony for anthropologist A.P. Elkin, and she was a signatory to the Larrakia Petition of 1972 to Queen Elizabeth for land rights and political representation. When Dolly was at Adelaide River, she was very homesick for her own country, so some of the AWAS servicewomen brought back a bucket of sand from Mindil Beach to console her. Dolly Garinyi is remembered today in the naming of the Dolly Garinyi Hostel at Berrimah. Larrakia Woman ‘Corporal’ Dolly Garinyi of Darwin, 1944. 10.01.2022 Today is International Day of Peace, a special day established by the United Nations in 1981. Peace Day is a globally shared date for all of humanity to commit ...to Peace above all differences and recognise the efforts of those who have worked hard to end conflict and promote peace. The 2020 Theme is Shaping Peace Together, and I think this sentiment is particularly pertinent in our current circumstances, as the COVID-19 pandemic has demonstrated how truly inter-connected we all are. I urge you to take a moment today to reflect on what Peace means to you.

10.01.2022 My husband and I are from Delhi. But we chose to come to Wagga Wagga to do our PhDs, as we thought it would be a good place to raise our two-year-old daughter. ...At first, I felt homesick and experienced a little culture shock everything was so quiet! But I soon decided to volunteer as much as possible to engage with the Australian community. It started when I volunteered at my university. That led to volunteering at both the local Council and the Multicultural Council of Wagga Wagga. Then when my daughter started school, I joined her school’s P&C. I’m now the president, and I’m also a board member at the NSW P&C Federation representing Riverina. I have since gone on to volunteer in many other roles in my community, including recently in my local Country Women’s Association (CWA), where I am the only ethnic person! I have won many awards for my work in the community, including NSW international Student of the Year, the Australia India Business and Community Awards, the 2018 AFR 100 Women of Influence Awards and the 2019 Riverina Volunteer of the Year Award. Of course, I am really busy, but I find that planning all my events with an excel spreadsheet really helps! After we finished our PhDs, my husband and I both struggled to find a job in our field in Wagga, but eventually we succeeded, and we now both have jobs that we really love. I am now a Project Manager with NSW Health working at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital. I strongly recommend volunteering to anybody who is feeling isolated or is new to Australia. I find local people love engaging with you and learning about your culture, which really makes you feel special. And they're also ready to help you to understand many things about life in Australia. We’ve made some great friends over the years who I really trust and rely on. It has completely changed my life. 08.01.2022 The #TSBakeOff is back for its fourth year! Today, I am thrilled to announce that the Threatened Species Bake Off is back for 2020. To mark Threatened Species D...ay on September 7, I’m encouraging Australians to bake a dessert in the shape of a threatened species and share it with me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #TSBakeOff. This year, journalist and Australian bird enthusiast, Chris Bath and seasoned #TSBakeOff judge, ecologist Dr Bec West will be joining me to judge submissions. As we are all spending much more time at home in 2020, this year’s theme is ‘What’s in your backyard?’. We are encouraging you to research and celebrate the threatened species found in your local area, backyards and schools. To add to your discovery adventure, we are also encouraging you to take part in this year’s Backyard Bush Blitz. You are guaranteed to learn more about the remarkable biodiversity in your own backyard! There are six categories that you can enter including an early learner’s category (children 4 years old and younger), a children’s category (children aged 5 15 years old), an open category (15 years and older including community groups), a schools category and a Bush Blitz award, which will be given to the entry with the highest number of submissions to the Backyard Species Discovery Project on iNaturalist Australia (bit.ly/BackyardBushBlitz). Get baking Australia! I can’t wait to see what creations you make and the species you discover in your own backyard! More information is available at bit.ly/tsbakeoff
