21.01.2022 MAUREEN KINROSS, J.P. It is with great sadness that we farewell an active and long-standing member of the Batemans Bay CWA Branch and the CWA Far South Coast Group. Maureen Kinross was born in Batemans Bay on 23rd May 1938 and died here on the 30th October 2020. A past President, Vice-President, Publicity Officer, Welfare and Hospital Visiting Officer, Community Volunteer - Catholic Church, Probus and member of other groups. Maureen was also a Justice of the Peace, a Mum and... a Grandmother. Always busy organising or co-ordinating functions and talks around Community health matters, Domestic Violence prevention and, more recently, Emergency and Disaster Relief. A Nurse/Midwife was her chosen career and she kept a keen eye on Hospitals and service delivery here in the Bay. She would say "Come on girls, this isn't right!". Letters would then be sent to Andrew Constance and Gladys Berejiklian to enact or change a policy. Maureen's was a voice to be heeded, a lady of determination and drive and she remained this way for the rest of her life. Maureen took an active role in recording the history of our CWA Branch - and loved using her camera. The 'Bay Post' Editor, Kerrie O'Connor, loved and admired her. If the coverage was poor, Maureen would be in at the Bay Post office with scones freshly baked by herself. The cream was missing and when asked why, her answer was "Not good coverage or none at all" - they got the message. Always ready to serve, loved humour and a good joke, enjoyed dressing up for the Fashion Parades and CWA Group events. Who can forget the Fun Days at State Conference - the Chicken and the Ugly Sister in 'Cinderella.' A star has gone out! She will be greatly missed - her passion for her family and the Community is to be remembered and commended. Our Maureen was special - a friend to many and much loved in return.

18.01.2022 KOALA FACTS: Animal of Study 2019 1. Koalas are marsupials not bears and are a lot like wombats. 2. Koala babies are called joeys and develop in their mothers pouch for around six months, then they ride on mums back going into the pouch to eat and sleep. 3. Koalas are native to the eastern coastline of QLD,... NSW, VIC and SA. They live in eucalyptus trees in forests and bushlands. 4. Koalas eat up to a kilo of eucalyptus leaves a day preferring the newer leaves at the top of the tree. Their digestive organ helps to detoxify the chemicals in the leaves as they are very toxic. 5. Koalas usually get enough moisture from the leaves, but will drink from various water sources during drought and heatwaves. 6. Koalas sleep long hours to conserve energy not because thy are drugged by the eucalyptus leaves. 7. Koalas are susceptible to chlamydia, not the same strain as humans, which can cause blindness and reproductive tract infections. 8. Koala habitats are being destroyed by tree clearing. Forcing the koalas to spend time on the ground looking for food and shelter. They are then venerable to attack by dogs and being hit by vehicles and falling ill to stress related disease. See more

08.01.2022 I got this off the CWA closed group. I was watching a program on the ABC last night and mention was made of Apostlebirds. As I didn't know anything about them I have looked up for info. and found mention being made that they are also known as cwa birds. "social groups are so important to them, they will team up with six to 20 other birds, doing everything together and telling each other about it very loudly. That’s how the apostlebird got its name after the 12 Biblical apos...tles who teamed up to follow Jesus. And that loud chattering is how it got its other name: the CWA bird. Which refers to the Country Women’s Association, because apparently these nattering birds used to remind people of their meetings.looked up for info. and found mention being made that they are also known as cwa birds. 05.01.2022 THE YEARS 2000-2003 On Australia Day 2000, Elsie Price received a Eurobodalla Shire Council Australia Certificate of Appreciation. The branch presented fire blankets to all Rural Fire Service Trucks in the area. Lillian Burkinshaw was instrumental in organising social events to raise money for Medical Research and the introduction of the St Cecelias Music Scholarship. Lillian received praise and congratulations for her research and presentation of a paper on "Diabetes Melli...tis" at the Group Conference, she emphasised the need for more research funds to find a cure for a problem that affects many people. At the AGM held in 2000 there were 76 members. The Early Childhood Clinic moved to the Batemans Bay Hospital after 45 years association with the CWA. CWA keeps it association with the babies by Mavis Ferries weekly visits to the maternity ward to give new babies booties knitted by members. In July 2002 members requested that Mr Ray Bassett and Mr Phil Purdie be invited to attend the next Committee Meeting to discuss the purchase of the CWA Hall, and to give details of what their offer consisted of. Copies of the questions asked and answers given where discussed at the August Meeting and the outcome deferred until valuation was undertaken at Mr Purdies expense. Margaret Hill and Maureen Kinross attended an "Archival Record Keeping" Seminar at Moruya. Maureen was given members approval to write a History of Batemans Bay Branch for the 70th Anniversary coming up in March 2004. The year 2003 began with dreadful bushfires in Canberra. This affected members as many had family and friends effected. The fallout of smoke and ash caused darkness at 3pm on a January day in Batemans Bay. A special meeting of members was called for 23rd January,2003, to consider an offer from Mr Purdie to swap our hall and land at 10 Beach Rd for a new hall and land at Edward Road, Sunshine Bay. After discussion on the requirements, rules and regulations relating to disposal of CWA property, it was decided that further negotiations proceed, with a visit to the site and perusal of plans and related documentation. At a second meeting on 6th February it was decided to accept Mr Purdies offer. See more
