24.01.2022 Have you ever spotted a Carnabys Black Cockatoo? A much-loved Western Australian icon, these impressive birds can be rather conspicuous, sometimes congregating... into large flocks. As part of the Environment Restoration Fund, the Australian Government has announced $3 million in funding to help in the recovery of this threatened bird. The funding will be delivered by five natural resource management organisations: NACC, Peel-Harvey Catchment Council, Wheatbelt Natural Resource Management Inc, South West Catchments Council (SWCC), and South Coast Natural Resource Management Inc., in partnership and with the support of BirdLife Australia. This project will focus on finding and protecting breeding sites and restoring breeding habitat. The decline in Carnabys has been primarily due to the loss and fragmentation of habitat. Carnabys also require nesting hollows from large trees that are up to 200 years of age. The project will work with landholders to install nesting boxes in important breeding areas and help in the raising of Black Cockatoo fledglings in time for the main breeding season. 20.01.2022 Quite often these days development projects require clearing of native remnant vegetation , when this impacts on threatened species or threatened ecological com...munities under the Federal EPBC act* , impacts may be offset by the provision of land elsewhere. Unfortunately with such losses of more than 80 percent of vegetation cleared on the Swan Coastal Plain , this is getting harder and harder to find suitable and comparable land as an offset , proving that it is not a sustainable long term answer to protection of biodiversity. With the political movement of Federal Environmental watchdog and safety net powers being delegated to the states in some cases it is very concerning offsets may continue into the future. ( *The Environmental Protection Biodiversity and Conservation act protects Matters of National Environmental Significance ).

20.01.2022 We are pleased to announce the re-opening of the Casuarina Wellard hall to our regular community groups. Whilst we are currently limited to 20 people at this stage, it wont be long before allowable numbers will be increased. We still have some time slots available if there are any groups looking for hall space.

04.01.2022 Call to action Update Lot 123 Mortimer Rd Casuarina is a unique bushland treasure which deserves protection! It is 45 ha of regionally significant, intact biodiverse bushland and wetlands (CCW and swamps) in excellent condition proposed for subdivision. In the past it was rezoned to urban without being assessed by the EPA a big mistake. Under the EPBC Act it is a controlled action for assessment because it is Banksia Woodlands TEC in excellent condition, it has no i...ncursions. The proposal for subdivision is now open until 13 April for public comment to the EPA on the level of assessment. PLEASE do an on-line submission to call for the EPA to set the level of assessment as a Public Environmental Review - PER. Give the significant environmental factors: eg - Bassendean Central and South Vegetation Complex only 1.2% is in secure conservation tenure, supposed to be at least 10% secured. Should be added to conservation estate as an A class reserve for the purpose of conservation of nature. State Government could acquire it via the MRIF administered by WAPC. - Flora and vegetation: rich in diversity with at least 5 Floristic Community Types (FCT) present, at least 202 native flora species present - Is Banksia Woodlands of the Swan Coastal Plain endangered TEC under EPBC Act, which is to be protected to prevent its further loss of extent and condition This means no clearing. TECs cannot be offset, the avoid principle should apply. - Significant wetlands: CCW and resource enhancement wetlands with associated high quality intact wetland vegetation. - Fauna habitat for the endangered Black Cockatoos- Carnabys Cockatoo , Forest Red-tail Black Cockatoo. MNES. - P4 Western Brush Wallaby present conservation significant - P4 Southern Brown Bandicoot present conservation significant The on-line submission form and all of the documentation is on the EPAs webpage at this address: http://www.epa.wa.gov.au//subdivision-lot-123-mortimer-roa Click on referral, then click on Comment on this referral. If the EPA receives lots of submissions for a PER, a formal Assessment as a PER is likely because of high public interest. Thank you!
