23.01.2022 Just As I am SDAH #313 This beautiful prayer is often heard as a call to come to Jesus.... I have tried to depict the deliberating human path with the use of different keys in each verse, and even within phrases, highlighting that even when we make the decision to Come to Jesus, our journey isn't always a smooth, straightforward one. This challenging course has been further highlighted with the constant weaving in and out through both major and minor keys in line with the journey of yearning, mind willingness and desire to come to Christ. 20.01.2022 'Tis so Sweet' SDAH 524 I remember standing up on the pew at the back of church as young as age 5 to see what I thought was the most amazing group of singers in the world. - The Youth Choir from my home church - Croydon. ... One day I would join them, and at age 13, I did for many years. They all had amazing voices, and I wanted to be like them. Dad asked someone to teach me. Emma, agreed to teach me a few lessons of singing when I was 6 years old, perfect for a 6 year old that sang constantly. Emma's voice was big! I remember her standing in church on the stage, but facing the side, and hearing her at the back of the church, even if the mics were not on. I remember my first song - 'Master has thou work for me.' - What amazing words she sowed into my mind, seeds that have grown into actions. I remember that when Emma sang, she had an amazing ability to 'rubato' the note values, which took me, the listener outside of the tempo, and into the words, creating a deeper connection with the lyrics. 'Tis so sweet' is Emma's favourite hymn. Emma, 'Tis so sweet' is especially for you. Much Love

19.01.2022 'Fill My Cup Lord' SDAH 493 Back in 1994, as the preacher (Dr Valley) was just about to go on the stage, I was given a message - The preacher would like you to sing Hymn number 493 at the end of his sermon. As I flicked through the pages of my Hymnal, I realised that the title was not familiar to me. When I got to hymn number 493, It was confirmed - I didn't know it. ... Sitting throughout the sermon, I only remember trying to learn in by sight reading and hearing it my head. The nerves only became more, as I realised I had to sing it in the front a church of 500, without ever having sung it, or even rehearsed with my accompanist before. A few weeks ago, when Karishma sent me this request, I remembered the nerves, the feelings of uncertainty, and the trying to work out how this was going to happen. With as much prayer now, as then, the acceptance of God was poured out through the words of the song. This time, God gave me more time to arrange and work on a fresh interpretation of this hymn. Karishma, Thank you for the reminder that we are all worthy of God's abundant love. Dedicated to you my friend, with love - Next time though, it's a duet ... 17.01.2022 'More about Jesus' SDAH #245 Beginning on a Sunday, each night I spend about 1-2 hours in practice, working through Hymns and songs. I had been working on the hymn 'Tell me the story of Jesus' all week. On Thursday morning, every time I tried to sing "Tell me the story of Jesus" - The words and melody for 'More about Jesus' came into my mind... I let it go, and went to work. ... Thursday evening, I sat down to play and sing "Tell me the story of Jesus' and again 'More about Jesus' - came into my voice, and this time into my fingers also. "More about Jesus was written in 1887, by Eliza Hewitt, who also penned "When we all get to Heaven". She, like me, was a school teacher. She wrote this song while studying God's promises, fulfilled in Jesus Christ. The more she studied, the more excited she became as she saw Scripture fulfilled in every aspect Jesus' life. All scripture, She discovered, focused on Jesus Christ. I attempted to show her yearning and excitement with unprepared key changes, as well as no gaps between verses and choruses or choruses and verses. In the final verse, I superimposed the melody of "This is my story, This is my song' from the Hymn 'Blessed Assurance", onto her lyrics to further highlight her life of wanting to know more about Jesus. 17.01.2022 "Be Still my Soul" SDAH#461 Be still, and know that I am God! I will be honoured by every nation.I will be honoured throughout the world. (Psalm 46:10) ... The lyrics of this hymn were first penned in german in 1752 by Katharina Amalia Dorothea von Schlegel, and later translated by into English in 1855 by Jane Laurie Borthwick The Melody of this Hymn was first written in 1899/1900 by Composer Jean Sibelius. It is the last of 7 pieces of a piece named "Finlandia' which was composed for the Press Celebrations of 1899, a covert protest against increasing censorship from the Russian Empire, it was performed as an accompaniment to a tableau depicting episodes from Finnish history. It is an important national piece of Finland The melody of this song has been used for various other anthems and songs throughout the years. The lyrics used in the Christian Hymn, are a powerful reminder that God is in our side. In this Arrangement, we hear the words 'Be Still' 10 times. I thought it was an interesting juxtaposition to have the words "Be still" alongside the moving 3 bar snippet of Beethoven's Moonlight Sonata as a base for the song. I was messing around with that little snippet Moonlight Sonata one evening in piano practice, while the hymn book was open at this hymn, and the result in my mind created an even greater call to 'Be still' enhancing the lyrics, so I used this as a base for the rest of my arrangement. I continued this moving arpeggio pattern throughout most of the song, and also kept moving between minor and major tonalities, as well as moving between keys, and only finally begin to 'Be Still' on the 10th and last 'Be Still' of the song. arranged for Voice and Piano -CybèleCoutetCraig Blessings

After having found another location the next day to record the whole song, we were looking through the files to delete what we didn't need. ... 12.01.2022 'Breathe on me, breath of God' SDAH #265 Lyrics- Edwin Hatch... This Very beautiful English hymn melody was composed by Joseph Harker in 1914. Joseph Harker Jr who was born on March 6th (My dad and brother's birthday also) in 1880, became an Adventist pastor and worked in the North England Conference in 1916, was president of the Irish Mission in 1918 and later transferred to the South England Conference (where I grew up). He was called to the British Union Conference in 1939. Joseph Harker was often referred to as 'Mr Hymnal' as he was chairman of the hymnal committees that brought out the 'Christ in Song', 'The Advent Hymnal', and the New Advent Hymnal. He was responsible for the major task of collecting, assessing and determining copyrights of hymns. Joseph Harker Jnr's Father, Joseph Harker Snr, was also a musician and hymn writer. I was very lucky to be able to go through his original manuscripts for many of his hymn and song compositions. He moved to Australia in 1912. Although Joseph Harker Jnr came for a visit, he returned to England. Joseph Jnr's sister Nancy, studied at and received her Music Degree from the London College of Music - Same as me! Joseph Harker Jnr's other sister was Lily. Lily came out to Australia with her father in 1912 Lily married Cecil Craig in 1914, (the same year this hymn was written by her brother) They are the Grandparents of Adrian Craig, Great Grandparents of Bevan Craig - who I am married to, and who is the Audio and Video production maestro of all these videos.... (Luke 2:7 NLT) Jesus, Saviour of our World, was laid in an animal feeding trough (manger), because there was no room for him anywhere else. ... I'm guessing that if he was born in a stately Palace, many of us would feel like He was privileged, had the best start in life that money could buy, and then no wonder people were drawn to Him. But no, He, our Saviour, was born in a humble manger, heralded by Angels, and first visited by Shepherds. He arrived poor, with no earthly home or possessions and lived a life of trust in God - His Heavenly Father. He was born with nothing, yet His LOVE and LIFE give us EVERYTHING. 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.' "Leaning on the Everlasting Arms" is based on Deuteronomy 33:27, "The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms" This popular hymn is also known as "What a Fellowship." 10.01.2022 'It is Well with my Soul " This Hymn is very dear to my heart - When I left my home country at the age of 14, and went to church in my new place, they were singing this hymn and I walked straight out of the door in tears, extremely homesick, as it reminded my so much of my home church. I spent hours learning other people's version by ear from recordings, so that I could have a little piece of home at my fingertips. ... When I went back home a year later, Although my dad asked a few times, I never played it as a piano solo again - I was home. Now, 29 years later, I chose to tell the story through singing as well as playing. It made sense in my mind to combine this well loved him with the first few lines of my grade 8 piano piece - 'Arabesque' by Debussy. It brings the gentleness of the water to the strength of the Hymn. One of My dad's favourites, I dedicate 'It is well' to my Dad. He always encouraged me to keep playing and keep singing - practice, and always share. - No matter how small or big the audience - Dad has videoed me singing wherever I went, school, home, church, family events even on the beach in spain!... He has videos of me with a microphone in my hand before I was even one! Music should be shared as a gift - It plants a seed in the hearts of listeners. So Dad, This "It is well" is especially for you with Love - Thank you for inspiring me to keep sharing. Thank you for teaching me to be unafraid of the camera, and media, and to use it like we should all our gifts from God - To Share Love, Bless others, and bring them Joy. 09.01.2022 'When a Child is Born' This beautiful Christmas song always seems to bring on a strong feeling of unexplainable nostalgia. The melody and lyrics work amazingly together to create a warm feeling of Hope, Hope in the newborn, Hope, in the brand new morn, Hope in the change that's whispering in the trees. ... For me, this song creates memories of home; family being all together, opening presents on Christmas morning with this song playing in the background. I remember hearing it in church just with voice and guitar - Each year, when this song comes around, I smile and remember everyone's laughs and smiles, everyone's hope in Jesus, and everyone working together to make Christmas special. In this higgeldy - piggeldy year, it's important for us to remember that there is Hope and Love . Hope and Love in Jesus, who's birth we celebrate, Hope in the new, and Love in memories stored in our hearts and minds. However Christmas looks this year - reach out to those around you however you can - phone, FaceTime, messages in the window, email, a little note of hope, a video of joy - Let someone know you've thought of them today. 07.01.2022 Showers of Blessing SDAH #195 When my kids were small in London, and when were living in Melbourne, it rained often... and we didn’t have a car in those days. ... Armed with pram rain covers, rain coats and umbrellas we continued our daily routines... never letting rain stop us. Each time it began to rain, I would tell the kids God was blessing us, and sing them this hymn. They learnt it quickly and sang it too.... never letting rain stop them from what needed to be done! So I waited for rain to record this hymn for you! It was very cold! As well as wet! I’m sure I’m shivering! But it was fun... 02.01.2022 Jesus loves me this I know When my children were small - I sang this hymn to them each night as I put them to sleep - Even now, as they are older, it is a hymn they love . The other day, they were talking about different versions, and of mum singing, however there was no recording of me singing. ... So I thought I would arrange them a version that didn't put them to sleep, but made them smile and remember mum ..
