23.01.2022 This is great news, absolutely. But late to the party with many other states already in the 10's to 100's of kilometres already delivered. The sad state of affair is the disconnect between users of the infrastructure and the waylaid attempt to catch up by those in power. Melbourne was once the city of cycling in Australia Now, more and more, bike-lanes are closed for 'progress' at the expense of safer cycling and to allow cars through.... All of a sudden, the government has realised that cycling is going to have to be the way to get inner-city dwellers to get around as people don't use public transport. That if we have more people driving to avoid crowded trains, we will put more people on the inner city roads in their 'mask optional' personal bubble. We have been saying this for a long long time. Cycling commuters rarely use public transport in bad weather, they use their cars - that's why we always say in wet weather to the media "Did you enjoy drive to work day today?" Imagine this many fold over in good - hot weather with cars bumper to bumper and empty trams, buses and trains. So what is next? We will spend a measly $13m on a piece meal plan trying to get drivers on their bikes - or will the Andrews Government put their money where their mouth is and start promoting the idea, without the public buy in all we are doing is creating bigger killing fields. https://infrastructuremagazine.com.au//victoria-to-delive/

18.01.2022 Look, there are no two ways to describe this diatribe into the mental deficit known as News Corp (news.com.au). Their lack of intelligence is only bridled by their inability to come up with anything new. I dare them to come and discuss this rubbish with a real person, rather than their 'BOT' writers that hide behind their personas dictated by the sub editor whose entire brain would fit into a thimble and still have room for a thumb. Bicycle riders - be aware of more aggressiv...e drivers over the next few days people, the brains at News Corpse have spoken. To the following newspapers, you will have more to report from the coroners over the next few weeks as bike riders get targeted by self-righteous motoring bullies that believe they are allowed to take the (un)law into their own hands. 17.01.2022 Rather poor advice here, though at times it may be desirable as a choice. The author’s key advice is: 1. Parroting the standard, knee-jerk right-wing shock-jocks. 2. Not any actual laws 3. At times actual BAD advice, and at best mostly unnecessary.... *Use the bike lane - yes, IF it is an actual legal lane, and there is no legal obligation to use off-road paths. Poorly designed bike lanes are often impracticable and may not suit some riders at times (eg. when lining up for a right turn). *Do not ride two-abreast in a bike lane - no such law, and this is all going to depend upon the space available in the lane. The best lanes are built wide enough so that this can easily be done. *Use a bell - not legally required and sometimes your voice may be a better choice; the road rules ONLY specify that a bell must be fitted. *Do not use headphones - again, there is no such road law. Many people may be quite happy to ride using headphones/earbuds. Otherwise, why is it so very accepted that pedestrians can use these whilst walking on shared paths?

15.01.2022 15,000 trips a week are being undertaken on Sydney's new pop-up cycleways. If you like the pop-up cycleways we encourage you to write to your local council, MP or Transport for NSW and let them know. They need your support to help them stay and to build more, And of course, keep on riding and sharing news of the pop-ups. https://bicyclensw.org.au/15000-trips-weekly-for-sydneys-/

15.01.2022 No more boring loops of the district, we can finally get out and ride... If you haven't lived in a real lockdown, you won't understand. If you haven't been out on your bike doing your normal training, you won't get it.... But for Victorians, this is the best news in months. Thank you Uncle Dan (not my real uncle) we now have a 25k radius to play in. With no time limit we may get in some real training time. Thank you Dan Andrews, we need this for our sanity, for our kids to train and race again (one day). It is so needed. Find your 25ks here https://www.calcmaps.com/map-radius/ https://youtu.be/WlK7Em5acss

13.01.2022 We're glad to see public outrage at lethal driver behaviour risking people's lives. We hope to see a positive trend with Police Investigations into this recklessness.

12.01.2022 Melbourne riders: When planning your hour's exercise please be aware of flooding.

11.01.2022 The COVID bike boom has been slowed down by a shortage of supply of new bikes. All we can suggest is to try to source second hand bikes. Interestingly, the boom has been the biggest in Victoria and seems to be proportional to lockdown measures. So the more we can’t go out, the more we want to ride!

11.01.2022 The independent safety audit on this Sydney pop up bike lane was actually commissioned by local residents, who have lost some of their on-street parking due to the new bike lane. However, taking a stance of being concerned for the safety of cyclists, they have raised opposition to the lane. Notably, no cyclists have complained about the lane and it’s been approved by the City of Sydney. Good news is, of course, that non cyclists are so concerned with the safety of cyclists now

11.01.2022 Just for a bit of fun... And because the last one has proven so popular. A 360 Small ride in the empty Melbourne July 2020 https://youtu.be/MZsoPrhgb4w... Use your phone or a tablet to watch as this can be seen from every angle.

10.01.2022 Advocacy, Grief and Justice Today marks a good day for cycling and active transport advocacy in Melbourne and Victoria. The State Government has announced 100 kms of new pop-up bike lanes and plans to finally pass safe passing distance laws in Victoria. Before you thank the Andrews Government for passing a law that they actually voted down a few years ago, first thank advocacy groups and individuals who have worked for years, without pay, to make cycling in Australia safer fo...r others. But there are still too many people grieving the unnecessary and avoidable loss of loved ones. Fathers, mothers, wives, husbands, partners, and sons and daughters across Australia and the world are too often the ‘other’ victims. Sadly, this is sometimes because of a miscarriage of justice. One such miscarriage of justice is documented in my book Kangaroo Justice and the Death of Mike Hall, which will be available next week in print and ebook formats from KangarooJusticeTheBook.com. Other books in development and soon to be released include one documenting those who set cycling endurance records in Australia, one about Phil McDonald and his penny farthing shenanigans, and two documenting miscarriages of justice. The two miscarriages of justice stories, documenting the deaths of two cyclists, share some all too common themes: the grieving family being given legal advice by the police; the offending driver not being charged, or being given a slap on the wrist by public prosecutors; a life lost with no discernible change to behaviour; and the family later regretting not pushing harder for justice. Unfortunately, most cycling organisations can offer little help or advice to victims (eg Bicycle Network, Pedal Power), or they offer poor advice (in at least one instance). And yet, while the Australian Cycle Alliance ('Cycle') cannot offer legal advice, a body of knowledge and experience is growing relating to how victims can take steps to effect change. Meanwhile, Australia as a society still needs: better laws (including insurance law reform and not just passing distance laws); more accountability for police; and a justice system that is beyond reproach. We are far from where we need to be. Post-pandemic when international travel resumes, will we all fly to Paris to enjoy the new bike culture and infrastructure there? Or will Australia open its arms to the world as a safe and sustainable tourism destination and as a society that is transforming itself into a place where parents can confidently allow their children to walk and cycle - unaccompanied - to school everyday? Will it just take a pandemic? Or do we still need a tsunami? Heath Ryan. (Photo: Heath Ryan enjoying a safe ride 'sin casco' - that is, without a helmet - in Barcelona)

09.01.2022 Ebikes divide the masses and here at Cycle, we are no different! Yes they make hills vanish and can be useful for transporting tools, kids and groceries, yet there is something vaguely unsettling about creating a powered version of an exercise machine! Some even use them for recreational and fitness riding! Seems a bit of a contradiction, right? But if you love riding a bike, but not the hills so much, or if you don’t want to slow down with age, or even if you just want to be...at the one in front, an ebike could be for you! (Or do you think they were actually invented to get people out of cars, so are not really being marketed to cyclists at all?) https://www.theage.com.au//no-it-isn-t-cheating-to-ride-an

08.01.2022 What to do about those kids... How to deal with kids in your driveway.

08.01.2022 Anyone can ring, keep calm and log your info. Well done Rob, it is as easy as. Just remember - they are doing their job, do as Rob did, and you can help shape Step 2, step 3 going up to step 4.

07.01.2022 Today, after avoiding sentencing back in February, John Joseph Taylor was finally sentenced. Already in prison for breaking parole and trying to flee, Taylor had to face the family he destroyed in court today. It was reported by Bicycle Queensland that Taylor was sentenced to 3 and a half years but eligible for parole in 18 months. Penalties like this are always baffling, just to be caught with Methamphetamines in your possession in Queensland carries a 15 year penalty accord...ing to this site (https://www.kahlerlawyers.com.au/possession-of-drugs/) but being under the influence and killing someone tends to get you a lower sentence. We are deeply saddened by this outcome for the Frewer family. We send them our love and support. We know nothing can replace Cameron, but we hope this will allow some closure. Even if we believe the sentencing seems light and not in the public interest. Comments will be moderated.

06.01.2022 It seems close to every day how we hear those there to protect all people seem to only protect a few. When we ran the memorial ride for Arzu, it was a sombre occasion. When I personally went to the funeral, I was touched by the share love for this woman. I had never been to a Muslim funeral before, it was daunting and loving at the same time. I now feel for the Karakoc's family as the Australian system has let them down oh so much. With testimony that the driver was on the ph...one and didn't see Arzu when approaching the corner. That Arzu had right of way and the driver was supposed to stop. No charges were ever laid to the driver of the prime mover that was not concentrating on the road, no person paid for the death of another person. A motor vehicle deemed more important. Not even a fine for the use of the mobile phone, nothing for the distraction, nothing for not giving way. It is suddenly (as always) the riders fault. Ilkay, my heart bleeds for you, you have the love of me and my family. Your wife was so much more than a headline and she deserved better. I only hope the little we did in her memory may make someone one day actually put lives first. In memory of Arzu, you will always be missed...

06.01.2022 We have a very sad post to share with you soon. Before we post that, we thought we would remind some of you what you may have been missing out on. Remind others what the Kew Boulevard looks like. And for some, share some of the amazing cycling places we have in Melbourne. Best to watch this on your phone to enjoy the full, immersive experience. After all, it is a 360 video. On a PC, use your mouse to move around the screen.... https://youtu.be/i1bjinw_VJE

04.01.2022 Not that Melbourne cyclists don't know to dress for the rain, but this is still a popular game right now.

03.01.2022 Will these be allowed in Australia? They’d have many advantages. Air would be cleaner from less car emissions, virus is less likely to get in or out of them. Though they would present a challenge at bollards .... https://www.afr.com//could-this-car-e-bike-free-up-congest
