Recently picking up Best New Act in the Young Guns of Wine, Matthew and Jonathan Hughes have been celebrating success at their Flowerpot vineyard, on the edge of the D’Entrecasteaux Channel. 15.01.2022 Compost Project In our first season of events, we raised some money and donated it to local charities for direct help back into the Cygnet community. This time around we're taking a different path to making a positive impact. Since we're an event based around local businesses serving you great food and drink, it seemed logical to take more responsibility for our food waste and to help enable a broader use of composting across the whole town. ... So the plan with the monies raised this season, is to use it as seed funding for a modest but scaleable compost system that can convert our event waste and that of others into a positive resource for gardens in the area. Helping to close the cycle on this resource stream and feed people via healthier veggie gardens or farms, in perpetuity. In the right location and with scale, it could conceivably take all the suitable daily food waste from businesses in Cygnet as well as larger events like the Folk Fest or French Weekend, generating both large amounts of compost and potentially, also bio gas (methane) and some heating of water. The next step is to look into some of the facts around making this work effectively & sustainably, which will include identifying a site that's already active or a greenfield space that is appropriate. Lots to do but looking forward to having some suggestions from the community about locations and people to have a chat with, to get the ideas forming. Cheers, Anthony Loberto P.S.
