25.01.2022 We could do great things in the future. We older kids need to set a better example just like our Elders did. Sometimes, I just want the school day to be over but after reading the Uluru Statement from the Heart, I realised I need to do more with my time to make a difference and become my best. The Cape York Leaders Program helps me to achieve this by giving me opportunities like getting a good education so I can do more for my people when I get older. - Mark Strevens (Year 11, Bamaga) @fromtheheartau is a campaign to show Australians that an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament protected by the constitution is fair and practical. It is time that we make this change. You can show your support too! Visit https://fromtheheart.com.au

25.01.2022 Our students have been advocating to have the Indigenous flags raised at The Rockhampton Grammar School. This week marks the first time this has happened in the history of the schools inception in 1881. This is a great example of the importance of our program not only are our students getting a quality education our students are also teaching the school community about their culture. Happy NAIDOC week everyone / #naidocweek #history #naidoc #naidoc2020 #alwayswasalwayswillbe

25.01.2022 Fortunately, Qld Health have been working with sporting clubs and schools to safely get kids back into sports this term. Although getting back into team sports feels different for our students with strict rules around cleaning, signing in and number restrictions, our leaders sure have been happy to get out of boarding facilities and enjoy some active competition. Here we have Jahariz, Alice-Lee, Caylen and Rashedah back into the swing of what they love - football and basketball!

25.01.2022 Our Secondary Leaders from Stuartholme School in Brisbane, Ackron and Alaina, have successfully completed 4 hours of PrepL Online Drivers Learning. Student Support Officer (SSO) Clem, assisted with necessary documentation at the Department of Transport. Both of our Leaders will spend the September school holidays practicing their driving skills and getting their driving hours up with their families. Having a valid drivers license gives our students a sense of independence. The Cape York Leaders Program works with our students to ensure they are fully prepared school leavers.

24.01.2022 In true spirit of acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land upon which one of our partner schools is located at St Teresa's College, Abergowrie, has recently installed a special plaque in the formal entrance of their Admin Office. Visitors are able to easily identify which of our First Nations people's land they are on - Warrgamay Country. It not only features a welcome in language but also provides a Traditional Warrgamaygan story. To all who enter the foyer, ...it is a powerful visual reminder that provides awareness of who's country/area they are visiting. This is a wonderful learning tool and is a celebration of the school's commitment to reconciliation. The timing of the display fits beautifully into this year's NAIDOC theme - Always Was, Always Will Be. The Cape York Leaders Program are proud to be partnered with schools such as St Teresa's College, who actively acknowledge our First Nations people, our history, our stories, our culture and furthermore - work together with us in supporting our students to achieve positive educational outcomes. **Pictured below: L-R Dane Foote, Angela Foote, Brodie Foote, SSO - Sharon Phineasa & Jayen Foote. 22.01.2022 Day Two of the 'Next Steps Conference' for our CYLP 2020 graduates, saw some inspirational speeches from guest speakers. The leaders were fortunate to hear fellow Cape York bala from Bamaga Nate L Jawai who spoke of his experience, journey, and amazing career in professional basketball. He spoke raw and honest about his many triumphs, setbacks, money management and, overcoming homesickness. A stand out from his conversation with the group was ... "To always know that ho...me will always be there for you, and as long as you keep it close to your heart, and be strong in your identity, you can go anywhere." This really resonated with the graduates as they take off with their individual career pathways. Thank you Nate

20.01.2022 CYLP works with our young leaders to plan their transition post-graduation. The importance of a young person obtaining their Driver Licence is of high importance to be eligible for most employment and career pathways. We are delighted to see our Yr 12 @djarraguncollege student leaders Beyonce Matthew and Tamuri Namai gain there Learners Licence before their school year ends. Keep up the great work and drive safe! ... #CYLP #bemore #capeyorkleadersprogram

19.01.2022 We have come to the end of Term 3 for the Academic Secondary Leaders across Queensland. It's been a big 10 weeks for most of our Leaders. They have all worked hard and we hope they are enjoying the rest of their time left at home over this break. A few snaps of our student's from Rockhampton Girls Grammar School, Rockhampton Grammar School and Brisbane Boys' College on their way home for the holidays. See you in Term 4!

18.01.2022 The CYLP HQ in Cairns were lucky to have a visit from Isabella (Bella) Raleigh, current Academic Leaders Tertiary student at the Australian Catholic University in Brisbane. Bella is in her final year of her Bachelor of Sports Science degree, and has persevered during remote studying to be on the home straight to graduation. She was lucky to be able to spend time back home with her family in Wujal Wujal. We can't wait to see what is next on her list of achievements. CYLP are so proud of the amazing woman we have watched her become since starting with us on the Academic Leaders Secondary phase at St Peters Lutheran College in Brisbane back in 2012.

18.01.2022 Premiering on NITV TONIGHT, July 27 at 8.30pm. Directed & produced by Caden Pearson CYLP Alumnus. #wawudivinehope #wawumeansssoul

18.01.2022 How fortunate are our Rockhampton Grammar School (RGS) CYLP Leaders to have routine weekly meetings held by Lisa Kibblewhite, International and Indigenous Student Coordinator from RGS. On this occasion Student Support Officer (SSO) Clem arrived in Rockhampton from Brisbane and was able to join the CYLP group for this conversation. The team got to catch up and have a yarn about positive things for them at school and express any struggles they are having. Clem's regular in...terpersonal contact can provide one on one support for the students if it's needed after liaising with Lisa and the team. This program support is vital for our students to improve their school performance and engagement. A safe space to feel included, heard and connected allows our leaders to thrive to their individual abilities! #weareCapeYork #CYLP #bemore

17.01.2022 Great to see a familiar face! Kade Wallace from Hope Vale is working hard at the Oodgeroo Unit, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). Kade is currently on our CYLP Academic Leaders Tertiary program studying a Bachelor of Justice. He is in his 2nd year of university studies. Good on you Kade for persevering during the pandemic.

14.01.2022 GAUAI TOURS QUT With the support of Bernard our Transition and Mentoring Coordinator, Gauai and his Mum Zeila made a visit to Queensland University of Technology (QUT) at the Garden's Point Campus. Special thanks to the Oodgeroo Unit and Student Representative Kat Dorante, for answering any questions that Gauai and Zeila had including touring the Law Faculty where Gauai hopes to study a Bachelor of Justice. The visit has reassured decisions on tertiary study and eased their fear of the unknown by seeing first hand the facilities and support in place for Indigenous students. All the best with your applications Gauai! #bemore #CYLP #weareCapeYork

14.01.2022 The Cape York Leaders Program (CYLP) ensures our secondary leaders obtain the necessary tools post graduation, to start their next journey as an adult in the world. A drivers license is essential to expand employment and opportunity. With the assistance and support of Clem, our Student Support Officer (SSO) in Brisbane, Kieron was able to enrol in Prep L online for his Learners Drivers License. Kieron from Cooktown, currently in Year 12 at Brisbane Grammar School, was committed to complete the online requirements prior to the end of Term 3. Our students and families are greatly appreciative of the 'on the ground' support they receive from the CYLP team, especially from our SSO's.

13.01.2022 We are so proud of this young man, Patrick Wallace! Patrick, hailing from Hope Vale and a CYLP Alumni, was enlisted into the army in 2018 and is still going strong! He is currently based in Victoria at the Latchford Barracks completing his trade as a Fitter Armament. Patrick is loving his duty as well as studying, and has formed a new family with the other members on base. Patrick is looking forward to completing his first trade and to new challenges in 2021. Due to COVID Pat...rick has not been able to come home all year so a well deserved trip home is needed for some R&R and quality time with family. Keep achieving great things young man! On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge those who have served and continue to serve our country. Thank you. #remembranceday #remembrance #lestweforget

13.01.2022 I love how the Uluru Statement from the Heart declares our strong ancestral ties between us and the land. I know it’s true because I feel the same connection myself. I hope to be able to do my part and shine a light on this bond and this important aspect of our culture through the art of song. Being on the Cape York Leaders program is helping me to understand the importance of these issues and how it relates to me personally. It’s about making our mark, to stand up and to do more. - Patricia McLean (Year 12, Mossman) From the Heart is a campaign to show Australians that an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice to Parliament protected by the constitution is fair and practical. Alumni, Joe Johnson, again addressed the group but this time on his current position, as a Community Engagement and Recruitment Officer at QUT (Queensland University of Technology). What a jam-packed few days for these young adults. Gathering together and providing information on topics relatable and useful post-secondary will prepare you for what's ahead. Good luck on this next chapter, you make the people of Cape York proud!

09.01.2022 The CYLP Academic Leaders Secondary students have finally started making their way back to their respective schools for Term 3. Most of our students have been in community and home schooled for the duration of Term 2. COVID-19 sent all students home in March prior to their communities being closed. It's great to see families travel through back to their boarding schools. Education is key and students are keen to get back into learning in classrooms. ... CYLP provided students and families with COVID safe packs to stay vigilant en route and we can't wait to see them back after 14 weeks away! #weareCapeYork #bemore #CYLP

01.01.2022 BEEP BEEP! Patricia is taking steps post grad life to equip herself with tools and skills to become an independent and confident adult. One of those steps is to be able to get behind the wheel which will give her freedom as well as extend her employment opportunities. She has taken initiative to do just that by successfully gaining her Learner Licence. Patricia is deeply grateful for the Cape York Leaders Program's assistance with this process. We are extremely proud of Patricia and her accomplishments and are always there to support her with real opportunities for personal development.

01.01.2022 Other guest speakers on Day Two of the 'Next Steps Conference' included three of our very own CYLP alumni.
