21.01.2022 If these are things NOT to say, what are better alternatives?

18.01.2022 You have a colleague, friend or family member that you think would benefit from counselling. How do you encourage them to consider it? My approach is to use the 'Reverse ICE' process... Find out how in this ~10 minute video.

18.01.2022 While everyone is different, in this <7 minute video I talk about some of the indicators that might tell you it's time to explore counselling as an option of support.

17.01.2022 I am going to be interviewed on Saturday 10/10 talking about the power of community and creating safe relationships... Hope you can join me! Link to the group in comments below if you want to connect to this and any of the other 26 interviews scheduled for the day!

15.01.2022 It's funny how things turn out... A client finished up working with me this week - the last of 6 sessions. Five of those sessions were spent with her dealing with anxiety, trying to make sense of it, and feeling pressured by expectations she was carrying in so many spheres of life. Somehow between our fifth and sixth session something shifted for her. She started establishing boundaries, reconnected with life-giving relationships, returned to strategies that had been hel...pful in the past, took herself to task for the things she needed to do, and had difficult conversations that led to positive results. For almost a whole hour she talked about all the changes that had happened, the things she'd had put in place to keep her well, and the changed relationship she has with anxiety. She is ready to face the world again. And she is confident that she will be OK. And what was my role in all of this? To hold a safe space for her to wrestle through what she was experiencing, to explore how she was making sense of where she found herself, to highlight the small changes that were showing up, and to help her to choose the next steps that were right for her. There may have even been the offer of some possible strategies and information to add to her toolbox if they were helpful for her... It takes time to make the change that is right for you. Do you know someone who might benefit from making the time to work towards the change they need or want to make? Feel free to contact me to discuss how I may be able to help... See more

14.01.2022 Here's the live panel talking about men's mental health. :)

13.01.2022 #Counselling takes time and you may be wondering how much time you will need to commit to the process. In this <6 min video, I talk about how I approach this issue with my clients.

12.01.2022 An FYI: If you're noticing that you are NOT getting all the notifications from groups you are associated with, below is the reason why and what you can do about it. Hope it's helpful! "Facebook has changed Notifications for ALL groups again. They have automatically switched members of most groups to receive Highlights instead of All Posts. This means that you will only see about one in ten posts on the groups you’re in! (Even if you’ve updated this in the past)... To change these settings.. 1. Please go to notifications (click the 3 dots on the top right of the GROUP HOME page....or if on a mobile device click on the dots at the top right of your screen) 2. Click Notifications 3. Change from Highlights to All Posts and save. Pass on the word in your other groups."

10.01.2022 I am regularly asked as a #counsellingtherapist if I work with a particular diagnosis/issue/situation. Here is my response.

09.01.2022 I am fired up! I just completed a survey on Preventing Poor Health in Men to be used in the Federal government consultation on its 10-year #PreventiveHealthStrategy and was quite shocked at how narrowly health was defined in the survey, and how #mentalhealth was not even acknowledged! The lack of understanding of the integrated impact of physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual factors that contribute to health is staggering... #Australia, we need to do better at... developing a holistic approach to health! The paragraph I wrote to at the conclusion of the survey is below. #integratedhealthmodel #wellbeing "I am VERY concerned that the funding proposals listed above nearly all focus on medical interventions and do not provide for specific strategies for addressing mental health issues that may be underlying the medical concerns. Our current health system is over-professionalised and not adequately trained in non-medical approaches to working with mental health, viewing mental health almost entirely in terms of individual pathology and being unwilling to deviate from accepted so-called evidence-based practices to improve mental health outcomes. My experience is that a medical approach to mental health does not improve mental health outcomes as it disempowers those who are already vulnerable, removes their sense of agency over their own lives, and makes them dependent on the health system, while discounting social and environmental factors that have an impact on well-being. All of these things can exacerbate and perpetuate poor mental health. We need an approach that is not exclusively or primarily dependent on medical intervention, that allows for funding to be distributed where the people living with mental health challenges would find it most helpful, that views non-medical interventions as acceptable and legitimate alternatives in the treatment of all who find themselves in a place of poor mental health, and that challenges the biases of our current health system."

08.01.2022 Sailing is a fine sport. Working with the wind and waves can be exhilarating. It is a also sport that requires precision if you are to reach your destination and avoid mishap along the way. If navigation is out by even a few degrees, over time you may find yourself far from where you want to be - and quite possibly in dangerous waters.... Comparing the map (where you should be) with your bearings (where you actually are) is critical to stay on track or to correct your course to be heading to your desired destination as quickly and safely as the conditions allow. As with sailing, so with life. How do you know that you're on track for the life you want? How often do you take your bearings? What do you do if you find that you have drifted off course? Regular #reflectivepractice allows you to *look at your professional and/or personal journey, *take your bearings in a safe, non-judgemental space, *assess the impact of changing circumstances that may blow you off course, and *make decisions about the next steps you need to take to get to where you would like to go. Contact me if you would like to know more. #thelifeyouwant #beyourbest

08.01.2022 I am not into #DIY. Give me a construction project and I'm likely to run the other way. Assembling flat-pack furniture I break out in a cold sweat. Handling tools just feels... awkward. Sorry if that makes you think less of me.... And yet there are some things that I can't really ignore or palm off to others. Even if I don't do them well, I have cobbled together a collection of DIY skills that I feel confident to break out when required. And it's always better if I can enlist a mate to share the load. Same with your #wellbeing and your #lifedirection. Unfortunately it's just about totally DIY. While many people can have input, it's up to you to take the steps, to identify the tools you need and learn how to use them effectively. And you don't have to learn DIY by yourself. #Reflectivepractice is a guided process to help you identify what tools you already have, what tools you may need to acquire, and a chance to step back and look at the life you're constructing. Contact me if you would like to know more...

06.01.2022 Here's a refresher of some things counselling can help you to work through. What is YOUR next step? Looking forward to hearing from you. :) Thank you for sharing with your networks.

05.01.2022 I work regularly with grief. Sometimes it's related to a death; often it's other things of significance that have been lost. Earlier this year I was working with a group of people who had been affected by the death of a co-worker. While none in attendance knew the person who died well, they knew people in the workplace who had been close friends with the deceased. A big question that was raised was how to approach the friends of the deceased in a way that was respectful ...and supportive. This beautiful animated video provides an answer. https://www.youtube.com/watch And if you need to talk about your own specific situation, contact me to set up a time to talk online or face-to-face. #grief #grieving #counselling #thelifeyouwant

04.01.2022 I had the opportunity to go out for dinner recently. (Yes, in the current environment that IS a big deal, but that is not my point. Read on...) My meal arrived and when I went to add some , there was none on the table to be had. Scanning the room, all of the tables in view were similarly bereft. ... Now, a younger version of me would have resigned myself to having a less flavoured meal than I would have liked and would have suffered in silence. The *slightly* older version caught the eye of a server and asked for some , which was duly and cheerfully provided. Problem solved! Now to the point: Are you resigning yourself to doing without something in your life or business because it doesn't seem to be available and because no one else seems to have it either? #Reflectivepractice - a guided process of regularly stepping back and looking at your life - may be one of those things you think is not available to you and that you have to do without. But it's not true. Just ask me. Here to duly and cheerfully provide to those who ask. Find #thelifeyouwant. #wellbeing

04.01.2022 Some photos of my new office space! I hope to welcome you sometime for a chat to see how I can support your well-being and growth... #counselling #reflectivepractice #thelifeyouwant

02.01.2022 I find myself regularly working with people who have a rocky relationship with #anger. Below are some self-talk #tools that may be useful in working more effectively with anger when it shows up. You're welcome to contact me if you would like some support in handling your anger better.
