19.01.2022 The liberation of Lesvos and the North Aegean Islands of Greece were celebrated in Canberra . HC Martha A. Mavrommatis , George Papacostas Ambassador of Greece and Milad Raad Ambassador of Lebanon attended with the President of the Greek Community John Loukadellis the President of the Mytilenian Association Dimitris Manikis, the church service and artoklasia at St Nicholas Church . A Paniyiri was followed in the Church car Park with lots of food , music and dance .... The hall of the church was severely damaged during the hail that followed the devastating fires last February and then came In March the Covid 19 pandemic with all the restrictions and isolations . so this was the first offical get together of the Community after church( more than 170 people attended ) and everyone was so happy to mingle ,eat good food , listen to good Mytilenian dance music. Congrats!!! To the President of the Greek Community and the members of the Board, to the Mytilenian President and all volunteers for the very joyfull and sucssful event . Above all a big Bravo to our Hellenic Youth dancers who once again , not only entertained us, but also made us so Proud . . !!!

18.01.2022 Was a great pleasure to welcome at the High Commission the New Ambassador of Denmark HE Mrs Pernille Dahler Kardel and the New High Commissioner of Mauritius Mrs Marie Claire Jeanne Monty . High Commissioner Mrs Martha A. Mavrommatis had a very interesting and productive meeting with her colleagues . They talked and their countries, human rights , gender issues, climate change the Indo Pacific region and of course how the covid 19 pandemic has affected both their professional and private lives . Mrs Mavrommatis also briefed her colleagues on the recent developments on Cyprus and the fenced area of Varosha . So pleased that the number of the women HOMs is increasing in this very important and powerful country, Australia

16.01.2022 HC Martha A. Mavrommatis with 15 other women Ambassadors and High Commissioners attended the wonderful Reception in honour of Senator Marise Payne, Australian Minister of Foreign Affaires and Minister for Women , marking the 5th Anniversary of the WoHOMA ( Women Heads of Mission- Australia ). At the event we discussed on going diplomatic work under Covid - 19 circumstances, good economic practises for supporting women and girls , the role of culture in promoting common values and of course we had a very good conversation on networking women in international relations . A memorable evening where we also had the launching of our logo the Kookaburras ( an Aussie laughing bird). Thank you to our dearest and capable Dean of the Diplomatic Corps, Ambassador of Romania Nineta Babulescu for so perfectly organising this awesome event.

16.01.2022 In Melbourne we had memorial service for all those who lost their lives during the 1974 turkish invasion in empty churches, as people were not allowed to attend due to the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions . For instance our Church Apostolos Andreas in Sunshine with only Father Evangelos and a couple of psaltes. In Sydney the Memorial Service, followed by a wreath laying, was organised by the Cyprus Community of NSW and the Cyprus Hellene Club at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. ...The President of the Cyprus Community of NSW Mr Sotiris Tsouris, the President of the Cyprus Hellene club Mr Panicos Achilleos and members of their board, as well as the Consul of Greece were among the very few people who were allowed to attend. In Wollongong (NSW) the memorial service, followed by a wreath laying was attended by the President of the Cyprus Community Mr Fanos Christou and the members of the board. Memorial Services were held in many parts of Australia by our Cypriot Communities, in full compliance with the regulations of the local and federal authorities . . See more

15.01.2022 Remembrance Day 11.11.11 Did you know that 16 thousand Cypriots ( 10%of the population ) fought during World War I along side the allies ? This year due to the pandemic all over Australia there were limited ceremonies for Remembrance Day. HC Martha A. Mavrommatis laid a wreath at the Australian War Memorial ( AWM) on behalf of the people of Cyprus . HC was greeted by the New Director of the AWM Mr Matt Anderson PMS . The Greek Orthodox Church was represented by Father Petros and the Archiepiscopal Vicar Father Prohoros .

14.01.2022 High Commissioner Mrs Martha A. Mavrommatis visited Sydney for a few hours last Sunday to attend the celebrations of the Independence of Cyprus and of the Saints of Cyprus, at St. Spyridon Church . The event was organised by the Cyprus Hellene Club . The president of the Cub Mr Panicos Achileos, the new President of the Cyprus Community of NSW, Mr Spyros Constantinou and other members of the Cyprus community attended the church service ( limited in number due to the covid 19 pandemic and restrictions ) . The beautiful liturgy by Father Steven Scoutas was followed by a lunch at the Cyprus Hellene Club.

During her visit Mrs Mavrommatis also visited the Breast Cancer Unit headed by our Community Presisent, professor Andreas Evdokiou, at the St Basil Hetzel Institute . She also visited the parliament were she bri...efly met the Premier of SA Steven Marshal and a number of Parlimentarians. Mrs Mavrommatis had the opportunity to brief the Parlimentarians on the recent developments in Cyprus ( Varosha , Eastern Mediterreanean). On Sunday they attended the special doxology at St. Nicholas church,( Amb. Papacostas made a speech) followed by the wreath laying at the Greek monument . Mrs Mavrommatis and Mr Papacostas also attended the St. Demetrios Celebrations, Queanbeyan (NSW) . The St Demetrios church service was followed by a lunch prepared by the Ladies Philoptochos . Congratulations to all involved in organising the very successful celebrations. During the meeting, among other things, they discussed about the on going diplomatic life and work amid the Covid -19 pandemic and exchanged views on gender equality and women and girls empowerment . Mrs Mavrommatis also briefed Mrs Mattila - Budich on the latest developments on the Cyprus issue and the Eastern Mediterreanean situation and wished her new colleague all the best during her tenured in Australia.

07.01.2022 The President and the Government of the Republic of Cyprus condemn in the strongest terms the decision of the occupier, Turkey, and of its henchman in the occup...ied areas, Ersin Tatar, to extend the license for entry to the coastal front of Varosha, during a pre-election fiesta they held in Ankara, in the eve of the electoral process for the emergence of a new Turkish Cypriot leader. We will protest over this provocative and illegal action on the part of Turkey and of its henchmen in Cyprus to the UN Security Council, the EU and all international fora as an act that violates international law and UN Security Council resolutions and contravenes the latest European Council conclusions.

In Canberra at St Nicholas Church we had the Memorial Service for all those who lost their lives during the Turkish invasion in 1974, organised by the Cyprus Community of ACT . HC Martha A. President of the Hellenic Club Stefanos Pashalidis and members of the Cypriot and Greek Communities (keeping social distancing and in limited numbers due to the COVID-19 pandemic), attended the Memorial Service. 06.01.2022 In Canberra at St Nicholas church we celebrated the Feast of the Dormition of the Theodokos. The Service was presided by His Grace Bishop Emilianos of Meloa . HC Mrs Martha A. Mavrommatis, Greek Ambassador Mr George Papacostas, Ambassador of Lebanon Mr Milad Raad, the President of the Greek Orthodox Community Mr John Loukadelis and the President of the Cypriot Community of Canberra Mrs Georgia Alexandrou attended the Great Doxology. A special Memorial Service was also held for the victims of the August 4th explosion in Lebanon . Our Prayers and Thoughts are with our good friend and neighbour Lebanon in this very tragic and difficult time .

06.01.2022 !!! HC Martha Mavrommatis and the Ambassador of Greece George Papacostas attended the Blessing of the waters Epiphany at Casuarina Sands at Cotter River, Camberra . The Blessing was presided by Father Petros of St Nicholas Church and Father Iakovos of St Demitrios Church . 5 young men dived in the river for the Cross. Congratulations to Emmanuel Papanicolaou for retrieving the Cross and bravo to all the young men who had a go . After The Blessing we all enjoyed the tasty souvlakia prepared by the Greek Community . They are a very prominent , successful business and a philanthropist family in PNG and Sir Kostas Constantinou is the Honorary Consul of Cyprus . 04.01.2022 The January 2020 bush fires on Kangaroo Island, South Australia( SA), burnt more than 200,000 hectares of land , nearly half the island , decimating infrastructure, wildlife and terrain. During their official trip to SA the European Union Heads of Mssion visited, with SA Premier Steve Marshal, Kangaroo island , where they met with people who lost their houses and their livelihood... Islanders with a very strong sense of community and solidarity are now helping each to r...ebuild their lives ... HC Martha A Mavrommatis and her colleagues also visited the Seal Bay in Kangaroo Island . Their 3 day very interesting full programme in Adelaide, also included a meeting with Premier Marshal, working lunch with the Governor of SA, Hon Hieu Van Le AC , meetings with ministers and the leader of the opposition, visit to the Adelaide Art Gallery, public lecture on EU at the University of Adelaide ( the president of the Cyprus Community Dr Andreas Evdokiou was also invited to attend ) , and a visit to the Indigenous Art Gallery ( where all the profits go back to the community ) . 01.01.2022 We will Never Forget the Greek -Armenian and Assyrian Genocides . Over 100 guests - led by federal Parliamentarians - gathered at the Parliament in Canberra to witness the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the Greek - Armenian and Assyrian Australian Communities, launching their joint Initiative prioritizing the Recognition by Australia of the Greek -Armenian and Assyrian Genocides. HC Martha A Mavrommatis, other diplomats, Parliamentarians, leaders of the 3 Communities and descendants of the survivors of the genocides were among the guests at this very dynamic and moving event . The programme also included traditional dancing by the youth and a very powerful, touching and inspirational speech by a 10 year old Assyrian - Australian whose grandmother was a survival of the genocide.
