23.01.2022 Message from His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Australia to the faithful of the State of Victoria In light of the increasing number of outbreaks of Covid-19 c...ases in metropolitan Melbourne and all of Victoria, I urge all Greeks, but also our fellow people more broadly, not to become disillusioned, not to lose courage and hope in God, and primarily not to stop praying. When a person prays, they find themselves in open dialogue with God, and it is as though heaven descends upon earth. Moreover, I call upon all our fellow citizens to respect and to comply with the recent guidelines which have been issued by the Victorian State Government, especially those concerning the new restrictions relating to Church attendance. More specifically, I ask that our faithful limit their interactions with others; that they wear protective masks; that they seek testing if required, and that they do not to attend any event where many people gather. It is for this reason, that we have already given instructions in relation to Churches remaining closed for public worship as a means of abating the spread of the Coronavirus. This measure ensures that the entire community remains safe and protected; and that we do not inadvertently become the source of any community outbreak. Thankfully, many Churches have now established a means for virtual connectivity and details relating to the streaming of Services can be found on the respective Parish/Community websites and Facebook sites. It is with much pain of soul that we follow the developments at St Basils Homes for the Aged of our Holy Archdiocese, together with all other Institutions of Melbourne and the broader region which are encountering cases in Coronavirus. We call upon all employees, all those who are implicated and primarily the relatives of those with the illness, to show understanding and to support the administration of the respective Institutions. We are certain that no one is pleased with this situation, no one rejoices in the spread of the pandemic. We are all striving to do that which is best. The Archdiocese will continue to remain vigilant in monitoring the situation on a daily basis and, in cooperation with the Governing Authorities, the Archdiocesan Vicars in Victoria and the priests, will directly communicate any changes as soon as they are received. We especially ask that you continue to show caution, fellowship, unity, understanding, love and most certainly your trust in the local Church, the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. We will continue to pray to our loving Lord asking that He may provide His loving mercy, that He may strengthen us with His love and protect us with His care. 13.01.2022 ARCHBISHOP MAKARIOS MESSAGE FOR THE 80TH ANNIVERSARY OF OXI DAY. The heroic NO of October 28, 1940, is flanked with pride, gratitude and responsibility. These... three words which echo through our ears only to travel to our thoughts, overwhelm our very existence today. We stand with pride because 80 years ago the small and poor nation of Greece stood up to the mighty war weapons of fascist Italy and Nazi Germany, only to become an example of heroism and self-sacrifice for all the peoples of the world. Reflecting on this spirit of self-sacrifice and strength with which our ancestors fought for our Faith and Homeland, we bow with respect to their memory and express our deepest gratitude. Without their struggle, none of what we enjoy today would be possible. At the same time, we give praise and show gratitude to the Blessed Theotokos for the protection and comfort she gave to the struggle of the Greeks during the epic of 1940. Today's anniversary, which coincides with the feast of Her Holy Protection is another reminder to all that in the critical moments of history, the Blessed Theotokos with Her grace fortified and sheltered the Nation of Greece. As we can appreciate, we have a sacred obligation and responsibility to pass this legacy which was given to us by our ancestors, to the generations that will follow. It is not just dates, names, and "bare" information that our young people need to memorise. Above all, it is the ideals and values of our Nation and Faith, which prompted our ancestors with solidarity to resist heroically and willingly, sacrificing even their lives. It would be an omission if we forgot that the Epic of 1940 and World War II as a whole, were a historical circumstance in which the bonds of friendship between Greeks and Australians were further strengthened after they fought together on the same side of history. With these thoughts, on behalf of their Graces our Assistant Bishops, together with the holy clergy, the monastics and honest people of our Holy Archdiocese, I wish all Greek women and men everywhere around the world, many blessed years sheltered by the Holy Spirit!

12.01.2022 In Melbourne we had memorial service for all those who lost their lives during the 1974 turkish invasion in empty churches, as people were not allowed to attend... due to the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions . For instance our Church Apostolos Andreas in Sunshine with only Father Evangelos and a couple of psaltes. In Sydney the Memorial Service, followed by a wreath laying, was organised by the Cyprus Community of NSW and the Cyprus Hellene Club at the Greek Orthodox Cathedral. The President of the Cyprus Community of NSW Mr Sotiris Tsouris, the President of the Cyprus Hellene club Mr Panicos Achilleos and members of their board, as well as the Consul of Greece were among the very few people who were allowed to attend. In Wollongong (NSW) the memorial service, followed by a wreath laying was attended by the President of the Cyprus Community Mr Fanos Christou and the members of the board. Memorial Services were held in many parts of Australia by our Cypriot Communities, in full compliance with the regulations of the local and federal authorities . . See more

11.01.2022 Modern Greek has been taught at La Trobe University for 38 years. La Trobe is the only Victorian university that offers a Modern Greek Studies program. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, La Trobe University has decided to discontinue this unique program. It would be a shame if La Trobe decided to disregard the wealth of knowledge that the Greek program has to offer. We, the students, are genuinely concerned that in the globalised world that we live in, La Trobe University is taking steps to diminish the role that language has to play in its students’ past, present and future. In the diaspora our language is under threat, and we, the students of the Modern Greek Program, urge you to sign this petition in solidarity to save the Greek language at La Trobe University. http://chng.it/WBDjXNFZpZ

05.01.2022 A sad story.......... The Shocking photo from the Turkish invasion with the two brothers. When the Turkish invasion of Cyprus took place in 1974... The family o...f Mr. Vasilis Girgála from marathóbouno (occupied village of famagusta province), left home to escape from the Turks. They got into the car of one of their people - inside it was crammed 15 more people - and they went to liopetri, somewhere near the river of liopetrioú. The driver left them and went back to the village to pick up his disabled father and others. Unfortunately he never came back... he is among the names of the missing persons and no one found out what happened to his father. Mr. Vasilis's family, together with their two children, kyriakos and panagiotis, 3 AND 5 years old, left liopetri and went to achna grove, there they set up their tent. When the summer passed and the rains came... The tents filled with water. Women were waiting in agony for the rain to stop and the sun came out, so that they could take out everything they had in the tent, supplies and clothes to dry. That afternoon... As soon as the rain stopped, the mother of panagiotis and kyriako took out all their belongings (their few clothes and sacks of food and supplies) to dry. That's where the kids were sitting. Some English journalists who were passing by at that moment saw the two brothers and asked to post them. They were surprised by the way they looked at them, the fear and sadness that were painted on their faces. They were very damaged and scared. " in this picture it's like seeing all the children who experienced war and refugees. All at once, a hug " mentions a student of the th grade of the forest primary school. Panagiotis Girgállas (the little boy looking at the journalists and the lens) was 5 years old.
