25.01.2022 I was recently talking to a friend who has found ways to support health in the midst of a severe diagnosis. So I asked her what were her top tips, the things that helped her through the most. One of the things she came up with was ‘learning to breathe’, really getting the air and oxygen into your lungs and the carbon dioxide and toxins out! We don’t really think about our breathing much (unless it goes wrong) or about learning how to breathe properly. However, there are many really good practices that focus on the breath, and these could be useful in your Intentional health journey.
25.01.2022 A useful article comparing the symptoms of Covid-19, colds, flu and allergies.
24.01.2022 Personally, and as a woman, I found that nobody really told me what to expect about menopause and post-menopause. Obviously, I knew it was the end of my periods and that I might experience hot flushes/flashes as I went through it, but other ‘symptoms’ were never mentioned. It is important to recognise that we all travel through menopause differently, and that our personal circumstances can effect how we feel and what symptoms arise for us. I found this clear and informative ...article on the AMS website, and feel that this is extremely useful for women of any age AND their partners, to raise awareness and understanding. For example did you know that sexual problems experienced by women include: Low interest or motivation to engage in sexual activity (low libido), Lessened ability to become aroused or experience vaginal lubrication (wetness) Difficulty achieving /or absent orgasm, and/or Painful intercourse (dyspareunia). For more information, read on...
22.01.2022 So, from one end of life to the other, a share about newborns. I have chosen this as it highlights an aspect of the relationship with newborns that I was unaware of, and because I feel, as does the author, that we all need a more understanding between humans, whatever their age, race or culture!
22.01.2022 Can considering scenarios and using the power of anticipation support a reduction in stress and anxiety?
22.01.2022 If you are starting out on healthy eating, or even just needing a reminder, this article about colourful eating could prove a great inspiration! As both a holistic health practitioner and as an artist, I love colour bright, strong and varied is what appeals to me in my art and in my meal prep! I also just love the simplicity of this idea... eat a rainbow, eat a range of beautiful colour, enjoy your food all your senses! For me, my favourite colour to break my fast (break...fast!!) is green ... fresh spinach, avocados, parsley, green smoothies etc! Then later in the day I am drawn to the reds and purples ... red capsicum, grape tomatoes, blueberries, egg plant etc! What are some of your favourites, and do you find you have times of day or seasons when you are attracted to one colour more than another?
20.01.2022 As you all know my focus is on holistic health and integrative medicine... I believe in an all-round approach that first and foremost supports health, but should issues arise, that takes the best from many sources to help support and heal. As such, I support many aspects of health, not least of which are good nutrition and quality supplementation, and energy work such as giving and teaching Reiki. As part of my connection with the Reiki Association of WA I am honoured to support the monthly sharing of Reiki at Solaris Wellness Centre in Cottesloe, and would like to offer an interesting video from them on integrative support for cancer.
18.01.2022 Today has been bright and beautiful here in the Perth Hills, but this time of year - the season of Makuru - is usually characterized by being cold and wet, with many dull grey days of rain! Until Friday 12th June, USANA are offering a special Booster Pack to brighten up your wintertime, click to buy or message me for further info.
18.01.2022 Despite this actually being an advertisement for a specific company, I have decided to post it on my page. There are a few good tips here, such as highlighting issues that can occur when one half of a couple has deceased and the other has never taken on certain tasks (bill payments, laundry etc). However, an important point is if you notice changes, not if this is a similar level of forgetfulness or lack of organisation that has been consistent over time. Also, if you do have concerns take it gently with your loved ones, remember they may be frightened by the changes themselves, too proud to ask for help and scared of losing control and independence in their own lives! Support may be welcome, but taking over may not
18.01.2022 Recently I have enjoyed an online ‘Fun Friday 80’s Dance Party’ with a friend, and joined a weekly contemporary ballet dance class... why I’m mentioning these things is because of what they both have in common, and what is summed up nicely in this article. Yes, the opportunity for healthy movement, losing oneself in music and having a good laugh, but also the importance of dancing like an idiot... what utter FUN!
17.01.2022 Certainly, in times of crisis and uncertainty one of the greatest skills we can learn is that of resilience. Here is an article (which also leads to a free PDF from Dr Ginsburg’s book) that provides us with some great tips on how to access resilience for ourselves and support our kids to overcome some of their current challenges.
15.01.2022 Do you ever come away from a meal feeling over full, lethargic and just not bothered to do anything... yes, overeating can sap you of your energy and create many health problems in the long-term. Unfortunately, in our modern society we tend to have such good supplies of food that, for most of us, eating too much is of far greater concern than having too little (although there are many people in the world that do have completely inadequate access to food and drinking water)... one of the ways I like to counteract this overeating with my grandkids is to serve small portions as I say your can always have more, but you can’t have less once it’s taken!’ I have posted this article from Wasteless Pantry on 8 Food Waste tips, as it includes smaller portions... which tip do you like best?
13.01.2022 And on the subject of sleep, here is an article from the scientists on how this nightly process supports health in many different ways...
13.01.2022 Yesterday was beautiful and sunny in Perth and reminded me of the summer to come... also this week, sad news of people dying while walking this amazing WA country in places I have not long visited! A timely reminder of the fickleness and relentlessness of the weather and natural elements we need to be aware of in our interactions with our environment. Please ALWAYS remember to check the weather where you are walking (if you don’t have a phone signal, check with the locals or... use caution!) and take plenty of drinking water with you! Meanwhile, stock your body with hydrating foods that can support healthy hydration as you go! Stay safe and healthy with intention!
12.01.2022 Here is an article that highlights some of the reasons why the nutritional value of fruit and vegetables has declined over the years. It points to both the use of modern ‘high-yield‘ varieties and to changes in farming methods.
12.01.2022 Did you know that there is a difference between the action of exogenous (from our diet) and endogenous (we make in our bodies) anti-oxidants, and that our endogenous anti-oxidants can scavenge many more free radicals during their lifetime that those we merely pop into our mouth? So how can we signal to our bodies to make more of the anti-oxidants we need on a daily basis?
12.01.2022 Our mental health has never been more at risk, the uncertainty that abounds across the world, the varying and opposing ‘truths’, not knowing what to believe and the fear that comes with this. Here is a useful article that considers a variety of different ways to manage our low feelings and hopefully support our daily balance.
11.01.2022 Having spent a very busy Sunday with back to back activities (not that they were not wonderful pleasures being with family and friends, glorious weather, exciting new art etc) I just wanted to reflect on the way our lives can get so stacked up that we are pulled into the busy-ness of it all and lose the real pleasure and enjoyment. Here is a reminder of how the practice of mindfulness can support our mental wellbeing and consequently our health. Slow down, use all your senses, give yourself time for reflection and don't forget that big self-hug!
11.01.2022 It is the time of year when we all start thinking about New Year resolutions This article has some sensible things to say about goal setting and habit forming. If you would like to explore your goals and ideas on how to achieve them, DM me for a free 30 minute coaching session
09.01.2022 One of the ways we can help avoid stress in our lives is to study the situation and plan a solution... this can help us maintain the feeling of control in our lives, that we are doing something about the issue. As Michael McQueen puts it dig the well before you get thirsty How do you see the future of work panning out for you?
07.01.2022 The low-down on kids vitamin products...
06.01.2022 Recently we are hearing so much more about the role and benefits of Vitamin D, and health professionals are beginning to take notice of the need to test individuals and recommend ‘topping up’! This article from Everyday Health doesn’t give much information, but does have a link to a brief survey that could give you an idea of whether to get your Vit D levels checked. Personally, I think it would be a great idea if everyone had their Vit D levels monitored, as it has been found that a large percentage of people do have low levels, and these levels are highly correlated to many health issues.
06.01.2022 In this (20 minute) video Dr Seheult discusses the findings which show that COVID-19 knocks out ACE 2 inhibitors, which in turn lead to increased oxidative stress and ultimately to increased thrombosis in the lungs. He suggests that those without oxidative stress in the first place are more able to tolerate the ‘burst’ associated with COVID-19. In his update 59, Dr Seheult points us in the direction of some of the important supplements we can use to support the immune system... and reduce oxidative stress, including Vitamins D and C and zinc. In this update he explores the link between high-fructose corn syrup or a fructose-rich diet and the body’s ability to take the raw material Vitamin D (from sun, supplements, food) and process it into the Vitamin D that the body can have access to and utilise to support health. In the end Dr Seheult asks an important question is fructose working against your Vitamin D? Well worth the view
05.01.2022 While this article is written about pregnancy and parenting, I believe it holds a profound message for any and all of us in this Information Age. Truly, we have information and data from every view and direction available to us 24/7... and what do we find? Surely what we know already... that each person formulated their our opinions, knowledge, skills and advice from their own unique perspective! So, while it is useful and important to do the research and look for advice and evidence, it is also vital not to lose sight of yourself, your true being and your own instincts. Listen, but then take the time to consider what feels right for you and your loved ones and live your life with awareness.
05.01.2022 How has your working pattern changed due to the current situation and how positive do you feel about your job? Here is an interesting article by Kevin Kruse outlining how he sees the post-pandemic office/non-office changes may pan out. Back in the 1980’s I remember working on an undergraduate module looking at how the ‘home computer’ would support a more flexible and effective workforce, working remotely and being able to better balance work/life/family aims and commitments... I feel that now, in 2020, we really do have both the technology and the will to look at implementing these changes in a positive way and into a lifestyle that can could be better for many. Let’s continue with the spirit of we’re all in this together and work towards happy, healthy outcomes for both our family and working lives.
04.01.2022 A fascinating discussion on how the way we breathe can affect our health, and the need to focus on what and how much nutrition we are taking into our bodies. Whole foods, Vitamins C and D, magnesium, and good breathing habits included in a holistic approach.
03.01.2022 Some good general guidance for wholesome and healthy nutrition. I am also an advocate of lemon water first thing in the morning, eating a rainbow, and a range of fermented foods! It is fun to play the rainbow foods game with the grandkids, and this also helps us all eat a wide range of foods each day/week/year which is great for health and for avoiding a build up of toxins from individual foods!
02.01.2022 I’m planning to have a relaxing time with my new Celavive masks... can I invite you to join me?
02.01.2022 Ross Walter, a nutritionist and naturopath from QLD brings us some sound advice in the continuing story of Vitamin D. His page has many further articles on health related topics and is worth a good look.
01.01.2022 A long article, but well researched. Essentially it reflects on the role of melatonin (sleep hormone) and sleep itself on our immune responses and health in general. For me, it is another strike on the side of developing a holistic approach to health and seeing ourselves and our bodies functioning as a system rather than a series of unrelated symptoms.
