22.01.2022 Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre in conjunction with Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service, Mossman Support Services, Mossman Elders Justice Group and Doug...las Shire Council are pleased to announce the winners of our Domestic and Family Violence Creative Art Project are: Best Entry #0013 This Needs to Stop Stephen Oldham and Victoria Park Most Quirky or Resourceful Entry awarded to #0015 No More Walking on Eggshells (name withheld by request) Best Teen Entry awarded to #005 Traumatic Love Best Pre-teen Entry awarded to #008 Thinking (name withheld by request) The Voter prize-winner has been notified by email and had requested anonymity. Our overall best entry This Needs to Stop was a collaboration between an artist, Victoria Park and a Funeral Director, Stephen Oldham of Community Funerals. We asked Stephen why he and Victoria entered our competition and he said we are both extremely passionate about getting word out in relation to domestic violence. It is an unspoken horror in our community and society that needs calling out and needs changing. The only way to do that is to be really active and sometimes very confronting. Stephen and Victoria plan to donate their prize to a related cause, directly assisting women in crisis.
21.01.2022 Congratulations to talented DABster Victoria Park for winning the People’s Choice Award at DAB’s recent End of Year Exhibition. Victoria created her moving and powerful sculpture, Precious, to recognise all women who have experienced violence at the hands of a partner. She states that she particularly had Hannah Clarke (Baxter) in mind when she was creating Precious, but that her sculpture is in memory of all women who live in fear or who have lost their lives in a violent... manner. This year in Australia, as at 30 November, one woman on average has been killed every week, often by someone known to her. Precious is attached to a coffin lid to remind us that too many women die as a result of family and domestic, or random, violence. Victoria explains that she used chicken wire to form the head, arms and hands comprising the sculpture to highlight the universal nature of the issue of violence against women. The wire does not show any skin colour and it allows us to see through the surface of an almost invisible woman. Before I started the sculpture, I could just see her in the wire, she said, and when Stephen Oldham from Mossman Funerals mentioned using a coffin, I could see this woman waiting to tell her story, to make people aware, from the grave almost. Victoria’s artistic ability is evident in the beautifully crafted Precious. She worked for five days to create the head and face, watching a YouTube video to learn how to use the wire for this purpose, and it took her just over a week to construct the arms and hands. It was a very emotional journey. I shed a lot of tears making her, channeling the plight of women like Hannah and Toyah the women who can no longer speak. Precious speaks for them. People find her distressing and compelling they can’t un-see her, Victoria said. Precious brings awareness to the plight of women in our local community and in our world. Victoria’s stunning work demonstrates that art is a powerful tool that crosses boundaries, confronts and disturbs us, and brings universal issues such as domestic violence out from behind closed doors. Precious is on display in DAB Gallery, 11 Mill Street, Mossman. The gallery will be open from Monday 4 January 2021, 10 am 2 pm. 03.01.2022 Have you noticed the new art additions to the extension on the toilet block in Rex Smeal Park? Beautiful work once again by Sam Matthews and her team. Down th...e road in front of the Port Community Hall, we find Ellen Terrell doing her stuff with fantastic sculptures. These are all part of the Public Art Policy brought in last year's initiatives-below is from a press release. Can someone add a photo of the toilet block artwork happening at Newell Beach by Lenice Schonenberger? Her work is also a project under RADF funding of which I am a very proud committee member. I got extra funding for the group just recently too! "THE rise of successful public art projects in Douglas Shire has led to a greater focus on encouraging more community-boosting creativity in the region. Douglas Shire Council made the changes to the Arts General Policy to recognise and further entice public artwork at today’s Ordinary Council Meeting. The changes come after several successful public art projects featuring Indigenous artists, such as Binna’s ‘bush-food’ sculpture on Johnston Rd, the banners in Mossman and Port Douglas and the night-time projections during Carnivale 2018. Douglas Shire Mayor Julia Leu said these types of projects had the ability to enrich the lives of locals and improve visitor experiences. This policy change proves Council is leading by example to encourage more public art to pop up across the shire, she said. The revised policy ensures consistency in the development, planning, acquisition, maintenance, deaccessioning and integration of public art in Douglas Shire.
03.01.2022 Keep creating and practicing!
