22.01.2022 We are excited to announce and welcome a new sponsor, Dashie Dog Ramps, into our DISA family https://www.dashiedogramps.com.au/ Dashie Dog Ramps are known for their pride in making a good quality product that is safe, as well as one which will endure constant wear and tear. After extensive research prior to the production of their ramps, Dashie Dog Ramps resolved to use premium pine as a base for the ramp rather than the customary thin plywood; a decision made to eliminate bo...wing or cracking. All materials for Dashie Dog Ramps are sourced locally from Australia and New Zealand. The key features of the ramps are: - Australian family owned business - All ramps are handmade at the workshop in Brisbane - Locally sourced materials - Premium Pine (not Plywood) - Marine grade carpet - maximum grip and easy to clean - Lightweight and folds down for easy storage - Marine-grade carpet - maximum grip and easy to clean Dachshunds, as we know, can have a super-dog mentality when it comes to flying off the furniture and DISA recommends the use of ramps wherever possible to protect their backs and legs from a potential injury. Dashie Dog Ramps has been given the sniff of approval by DISA so please support a business that has the back of dachshunds across Australia. As always - We've got your back. 21.01.2022 IVDD can be life changing, for both dachshund and owners. On DISAs Facebook Support Group we discuss about those moments of brain freeze and living a new normal, and we understand how something as simple as a virtual hug, and telling an owner weve got your back, can make a bad day good. We are truly grateful to the owners who are willing to share their IVDD journeys with us. They are an integral and loved part of the DISA family, and their stories reflect the spirit,... determination and sheer tenacity of the breed we all love. 20.01.2022 DISA has created a new public group "Teckel Hand Me Downs By DISA"; a portal for Dachshund owners across the Australia & Oceania regions to donate or loan aids that are supportive of our hounds' health, particularly when undergoing rehabilitation or recovering from illness. Owners are often in need of crates, pens, strollers, pee pads, orthopaedic bedding, supplements and even wheels. In fact, the list is endless and now with the current Covid-19 restrictions, were access to... rehabilitation therapies is limited, it has become evident that owners and their hounds need a leg up more than ever! As our motto says, Weve got your back, so if you are able to help, we invite you to join the Group and post your contribution. https://www.facebook.com/groups/teckelpif/?ref=share

19.01.2022 Did you know that today, June 9th, is World Pet Memorial Day? Our dogs mean a lot to us, and they touch our hearts in more ways than we can imagine ... so when they pass, it can be incredibly hard to deal with. While IVDD is something most dogs can battle (along with their people), for some, sadly IVDD can take much more than just back health or the ability to walk ...... Today, we encourage all of you who have lost a beloved companion to remember and honour your dogs. If you like, feel free to post a photo, story and/or a tribute below (and no, they don't have to be IVDD dogs!). We'd love to hear about your loves. And finally, if you are struggling with loss, there is support available By My Side - Pet Loss Counselling is one such service that has a number of tools (including a support group) that could be helpful and beneficial to you. <3

19.01.2022 Through the eyes of an IVDD survivor. It's 3 weeks deep into recovery and my fur-mum still has her sanity, Im going mad not being able to have zoomies however Our mornings look like 6am rise, massage down the spine and stretch and massage back and front legs, apply herb-gel to back and legs. Get on the road for our buggy walk to suss the neighbourhood out and whats been happening while I havent been on duty through the night. ... We sometimes go to the Roma gardens or a few other cool walks too which I LOVE! I get out to do two 5 min short flat walks so thats good! I poop and pee in the local park and off home we go for my favourite part, a fresh wild sardine!!!! My fur-mum, has her breakfast and her cup of tea and then we do our 3 minutes swimming in the bath tub which I dislike very much. She says Im doing good though pffftt! Then I get a towel down and a heat pack on my back before she starts work and I am shattered so I sleep mostly So, thats how we day, toilet breaks to sniff around the yard and cruising round the house in my buggy to break up the crate and then we do it all again in the evening less the swimming, which Im more than ok with! Love Olive Footnote: Olive and her fur-mum Bianca live in Brisbane QLD. In three years she has undergone 3 surgeries. Its not uncommon for Dachshunds to experience more than one IVDD episode, even following surgery. 18.01.2022 Did you know that the intervertebral discs sit between the vertebrae (bones) and act as shock absorbers? The vertebral spine is made up of 7 vertebrae in the cervical neck region, 13 in the middle thoracic section and another 7 in the lower lumbar back region. In between all those are the intervertebral discs. IVDD can occur in all areas of the vertebral column and whilst we most commonly see it occurring in the thoracic and lower lumbar region many dachshunds also suffer in ...the cervical (neck) region. Veterinary medicine has come a long way and thankfully IVDD is no longer a death sentence for affected dogs. Treatment options range from rest and conservative management to surgical intervention. The exact therapeutic protocol will vary depending upon the severity of the disease. 17.01.2022 Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) is by far the most common health problem in Dachshunds with around 1 in 4 that may be affected at some stage in their lives. 14.01.2022 IVDD is a genetic disease with no current cure. At this point in time, the only way to reduce the incidence of IVDD is X-Ray screening and scoring on dachshunds between 24-48 months of age. The aim of X-ray screening for IVDD is to reduce the occurrence of herniations, by encouraging breeding with dogs that have low numbers of calcifications. This will then assist with ethical breeding programs, to help reduce this disease. 02.01.2022 For the information of our Melbourne Victoria owners. Stay safe

02.01.2022 Its not uncommon when dogs are been diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) for their owners to be understandably overwhelmed and confused and concerned about what they should be doing to give their dog the best treatment for recovery. Whether surgery or conservative, the recovery period can be long and tiring at times, but it comes down to receiving support and advice from those who have been through similar experiences. Each dog is different, but the journey is... often similar in many ways. We have a saying on DISA's Support Group "never say never to a Dachshund" and Bogart is one such boy. This is his journey - a lesson in determination and courage March 2016 saw Bogart, from the Sunshine Coast in QLD, have an IVDD incident whereby he could not walk. He was rushed to the vet and was urgently referred to a specialist for surgery. Bogart was assessed as Grade 5. He stayed in hospital for around 2 weeks. His physiotherapy started right from the beginning after surgery with increasing amounts of therapy over the next 2 weeks. Once he was home, Bogart received regular qualified physiotherapy and also exercises and massage etc at home. Bogart had no deep pain sensation (DPS) in his rear legs but showed the ability to spinal walk whilst in hospital. He still has no DPS over 4 years later but baffles the experts by walking and running. His physiotherapist has never seen a dog do what Bogart has done to this degree. As he has grown older, he is around 12, he has aged quite a bit and no doubt his experience of IVDD has impacted him. Bogart has always been a very determined dog; he never gives up if he wants something. His pawrents believe this has helped him to deal with the IVDD and his mobility. He enjoys a quality life and spends a bit of time outside lying in the sun or chasing birds. He is incontinent so has to wear nappies and does need cleaning up after he poops. The washing machine is kept in work washing his blankets. The journey of Bogart's recovery was difficult and time consuming in the beginning but got easier as time went on. It was and still is worthwhile seeing Bogart enjoying life. The following link will take you to Bogart's Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/BogartDaschund/ WANT TO KNOW MORE ABOUT IVDD?
