25.01.2022 One reason I love picking up secondhand books is that every one has had a unique journey. We bought Two Can Toucan at a random charity sale only to discover it was an ex-library book from my country primary school. I probably borrowed this exact copy 30 years ago, now here it is again. (PS: How about those old borrowing slips for a blast from the past?)
25.01.2022 Babette Cole died recently, so it seems a good time to revisit her most famous book - Princess Smartypants, a bashing-over-the-head with a feminist message that remains relevant 30 years later. https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//princess-smartypants-by-
22.01.2022 If you like children's books and if you like cricket, then here's a Cricinfo-style match report of this memorable contest between Grug and Cara. https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//grug-plays-cricket-by-te
17.01.2022 An election day special on DadReads. Mister Dog is a very strange Little Golden Book from the 1950s that includes a discussion of what it means to be "a conservative". https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//mister-dog-by-margaret-w
16.01.2022 Who is the world's greatest living children's author and illustrator? Here, DadReads makes the argument that it is the legendary Shirley Hughes, who turns 90 today! https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//dogger-by-shirley-hughes
15.01.2022 Thanks to my Mum for the amazing new DadReads picture!
15.01.2022 That's a bit of a leap.
13.01.2022 http://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//mr-clumsy-and-mr-fussy-by Mr Clever is from Cleverland Mr Happy is from Happyland... Mr Nonsense is from Nonsenseland So why is Mr Clumsy from Australia? Here's a complaint letter to Roger Hargreaves, from Mr Offended
12.01.2022 https://au.news.yahoo.com/popular-childrens-books-labelled- A study has found that Little Miss books have on average 12 fewer words than Mr Men books. Sexist? Surely any parent who has ever read the Mr Men stories at bedtime knows that fewer words is a very good thing.
10.01.2022 Mog's Christmas was a fixture in my childhood. Merry Christmas from DadReads. https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//mogs-christmas-by-judith
10.01.2022 Donald Trump will be the 45th US president. Mr Rude was the 45th in the Mr Men series. Coincidence? Well, Barack Obama was 44th, and so was Mr Cool. And George W. Bush was always grinning... https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//roger-hargreaves-predict
10.01.2022 DadReads - the original manuscript (excerpts). I had clearly lost interest by the time I got to āUā though...
09.01.2022 Let's play literary Jeopardy. If the answer is "Anne Frank and Dick Bruna", can you guess the question? https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//04/miffy-by-dick-bruna.h
07.01.2022 Tonight on DadReads, Heidi's favourite book of all: Wow! Said the Owl. 'Just the right blend of vivid illustration and engaging text' says the Daily Mail quote on the back. Reluctantly, I am forced to agree with the Daily Mail for once. https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//wow-said-owl-by-tim-hopg
07.01.2022 http://dadreads.blogspot.com//the-country-bunny-and-little After a long hiatus, DadReads is back with an Easter classic: The Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes. It may look old-fashioned, but don't judge this 1939 book by its cover. Written by DuBose Heyward, who also wrote Porgy and Bess, it is deceptively, surprisingly, progressive. Highly recommended.
07.01.2022 Are these pigs being attacked by giant pieces of bacon? https://dadreads.blogspot.com//pigs-in-blankets-la-richard
06.01.2022 An Australian classic, and one of my all-time favourites. But I never knew until researching this blog that the Midnight Cat represents death. https://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//john-brown-rose-and-midn
06.01.2022 DadReads has been slack over summer but we're back! If Possum Magic was the blockbuster for Mem Fox and Julie Vivas, today we look at their sleeper hit - the poignant Wilfrid Gordon McDonald Partridge. http://dadreads.blogspot.com.au//wilfrid-gordon-mcdonald-p
04.01.2022 https://dadreads.blogspot.com//the-tiger-who-came-to-tea-b Happy 95th birthday to Judith Kerr. Today, DadReads features her first (and arguably most famous) book, 'The Tiger Who Came to Tea'. And we ask the question, what is the real story behind the mysterious tiger?
02.01.2022 https://dadreads.blogspot.com//dont-forget-matilda-by-rond Tonight, it's a DadReads first: an author interview, with Ronda Armitage. Forty years ago, she wrote a beautiful picture book that featured a stay-at-home father as primary carer. When I was a little boy, that book and that concept challenged and changed my perspective on families. I'm grateful that it did. It was called 'Don't Forget, Matilda', and it deserves to be remembered.
