22.01.2022 Christmas Safety Tips-Number 7 Make sure tree decorations are whole and no sharp edges. If your box of decorations is anything like ours there will have been some Christmas casualties over the years keep any sharp edges out of reach of little hands

21.01.2022 Today is Burns Awareness Day Did you know that 30 babies and toddlers go to hospital with a hot drink burn every day? Hot drinks are the most common cause of burns in young children.... 4,926 children under 5 were so badly burnt that they were admitted to a NHS specialist burns unit in 2019 that’s over 13 toddlers a day. These are pretty harrowing statistics aren’t they? It only takes a second for an accident to happen and for lives to be changed forever. Prevention is always better than cure but remember if a child does accidentally get burnt: Immediately get the child away from the source of the burn Cool the burn with cool or lukewarm water for a full 20 minutes do not use ice, iced water or any creams or substances Remove any clothing and jewellery (unless it is stuck to the skin) Keep the child warm Cover the burn by placing a layer of cling film over it. A clean plastic bag could be used for a burn on a hand. Please always remember to keep hot drinks well out of reach of children #beburnsaware Statistics from Children’s Burns Trust

21.01.2022 As of Wednesday 30th December, Penrice Birth Centre will be operating on an on call basis between 8pm-8am. Rising COVID levels and need to self isolate are havi...ng a big impact on staffing and this has meant a review of service, this change is to focus on staffing the women and birthing people rather than buildings and ensuring everyone has safe and personalised care while staff resources are used in the most effective way. All births planned at Penrice birth centre will continue to be supported. Choice of place of birth is an absolute priority and this change allows for the flexibility to support this. The midwife on call will continue to attend births wherever they happen. What does this mean for you? If you are planning to birth your baby at Penrice , this will continue to be supported. If you go into labour between 8pm-8am the on call midwife will be called to meet you at the birth centre and will care for you in the same way as before. Once your baby is born you will be cared for at the birth centre for the first few hours and if all is well you will be discharged home. Home births will continue to be supported as normal The postnatal beds will not currently be available for overnight stays at Penrice, all concerns including feeding advice and support will be handled by RCHT. Advice and support is available 24 hours a day through the Maternity triage line 01872 258000. This change is in place for 8 weeks and it will then be reviewed.

20.01.2022 Christmas Safety Tips-Number 5 Hands up if your tree has fallen down yet?! Inquisitive young children and pets definitely make life interesting when you have a Christmas tree up in your house! ... Make sure your tree is really secure so it can’t fall on little ones. Or consider having a smaller tree than usual and keeping it up high or behind a child-proof barrier. And perhaps consider saving the beautiful but breakable decorations for when little ones are a bit older.

20.01.2022 Sleeping bags Which? have conducted independent testing on some of the baby sleeping bags currently available to buy; only 3 of the 15 tested passed all of the safety requirements and 7 failed all of the requirements. You can read the full report here, including recommendations for those that passed all safety requirements ... https://www.which.co.uk//which-safety-tests-uncover-dange/

20.01.2022 If there are any families out there who are currently struggling with lack of sleep due to a certain little one (or ones!) then please do think about getting in touch with Rebecca! You can work with her online so completely Covid secure!

19.01.2022 You don't need matching Christmas pyjamas to be happy. Your kids don't need a picture with Santa to have a good Christmas. You don't need to have Christmas eve boxes to be a great parent.... You don't need half a dozen Christmas days out to have fun. Christmas films don't need to be on a massive TV in a tidy room. You don't need to have a cheese board and mulled wine. Your tree doesn't need to be colour coordinated to look beautiful. You don't need a huge pile of presents under your tree. You don't even need to change out of your pyjamas. YOUR Christmas is YOUR Christmas, do it YOUR way. STOP letting social media make you feel like you haven't got it all. MERRY CHRISTMAS xx

15.01.2022 CHRISTMAS SAFETY TIPS-NUMBER 10 It’s easy to get distracted while you’re busy cooking especially if you’re enjoying a Christmas tipple at the same time. Make sure little people are kept well away from the kitchen.... Did you know that according to the Children’s Burns Trust, the most common place of injury for children is in the home 49% of whom are burnt in the kitchen Cooling a burn is critical in the first aid response to any burn. 15.01.2022 Thank you again to Jo Buckley Photography for letting me run a class in their beautiful studio and to all the lovely parents and grandparents (and babies!) for making the class so enjoyable!

09.01.2022 This is me every night!!

08.01.2022 It might seem like a bit of a cliché but at this time of year, especially in this day and age of social media, it is so important to remember that your children won’t remember if you all had matching PJs, or if you moved the elf every night, home made the Christmas pudding or if you spent money you can’t afford on lots of Christmas gifts. This has been an incredibly tough year for so many and it is too easy to get swept up in what we think we ought to be doing as parent...s, not helped by those seemingly perfect squares on our Instagram feed, rather than what really matters. If this year has taught us anything it’s that it’s the people in our lives that matter most and the time we spend with them. Give yourself a break this Christmas if you can and don’t compare yourself to anyone else. To your children you are perfect!

08.01.2022 Today marks the end of Baby Loss Awareness Week and is Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day It is a chance for bereaved parents and their families and friends, to unite with others across the world to commemorate their babies and also to raise awareness of pregnancy and baby loss in the UK. The effect of social distancing from Covid-19 has had a major impact on access to care and support and has complicated grief and responses to pregnancy and baby loss. Many wom...en have had to receive devastating news without their partner present. Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, feelings of isolation have become more widespread around the world and many people have begun to talk more openly about loneliness. We’ll be joining the #waveoflight at 7pm this evening to remember all those babies and in support of bereaved families everywhere. If you have experienced pregnancy or baby loss there is support available.... 06.01.2022 Today is Restart A Heart Day which aims to increase the number of people surviving out-of-hospital cardiac arrests Survival rates from out of hospital cardiac arrest remain extremely low in the UK, with fewer than one in ten people surviving. Thousands of lives could be saved every year if CPR was taught more widely.... There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK every year, and every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10%. When someone suffers a cardiac arrest, performing immediate CPR can help double their chance of survival, in some cases. Hands-only CPR reduces your risk of catching an infection, and without intervention the person will quickly die. 80% of out of hospital cardiac arrests happen in the home and with increased numbers of people staying home it may be a loved one you are called on to help. In our classes we'll teach you how to do CPR. We'll get you to practice and we'll make sure you feel confident in the techniques you have learnt. Book a first aid class today......You could save a life tomorrow! TODAY ONLY Everyone who books a 2hr baby and child first aid awareness class with Daisy First Aid Central Cornwall, either for a private at home session (minimum of 4 people) or online via Zoom, will get 10% off their booking! **The class must be booked today but can be taken anytime within the next 6 months** Contact me via Facebook, email [email protected] or 07391526452 #restartaheart Source: RCUK

04.01.2022 *Maternity update* I know the announcement last night and subsequent lockdown has caused huge amount of anxiety about what it will mean for appointments and sca...ns as well as birth place choices. As of now, 4pm on 5th January, there have been no changes to the current restrictions in Cornwall and Isles of scilly. This means; * One partner/nominated support person is welcome at all scans and community midwife appointments * All birth place choices are open and fully supported including home birth and birth centres * One partner/nominated support person can be with you during birth * There is limited visiting on Wheal fortune, transitional care ward. Unfortunately visiting is still not able to take place on Wheal rose ward or day assessment unit. This is being continual reviewed and national guidance is changing regularly so may change in the coming days or weeks, we will keep you updated as soon as we know anything. Please remember that maternity services are open and if you are at all worried about your immediate health or the immediate health of your baby please call the maternity triage line on 01872 258000

03.01.2022 Christmas Safety Tips-Number 8 Festive tea lights, singing Santas and flashing Christmas wands are all powered by lithium button batteries, many of them easily accessible to curious little fingers. Please make sure they are kept well out of reach and look at our recent post on button batteries to see what to do if you suspect a child has swallowed one

01.01.2022 October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month Here is a great helpful visual guide for us all to help check our breasts properly, men too!!

01.01.2022 What do all of these items have in common? They are all powered by button batteries! So, what are button batteries and why should we be aware of them? ... Button batteries are small, round, silver-coloured batteries that come in many different sizes and types. They power many of our devices at home to make our lives more convenient. Not only are these batteries a choking hazard if swallowed, but if a lithium coin cell battery gets stuck in the food pipe, energy from the battery reacts with saliva to create caustic soda. This is the same chemical used to unblock drains! This can burn through the food pipe, to the main artery and lead to catastrophic internal bleeding and death. The chemical reaction can happen in as little as two hours. However, sometimes it takes days or even weeks. Lithium coin cell batteries can also cause life-changing injuries. There is a risk that the food pipe is too badly damaged for a child to eat normally again or the vocal cords are too badly damaged for a child to speak normally again. We always talk about these batteries in our classes as so many parents aren’t aware of the dangers and how commonly they are used in every day household products. Please always make sure battery compartments are secure, don’t keep spares around the house and if you so much as suspect a child may have swallowed a button battery act FAST and get them to A&E
