25.01.2022 A common misconception is that Key Word Sign and sign language (e.g. AUSLAN) are the same thing. They are NOT the same. AUSLAN is the native language of the dea...f community in Australia. It is a rich and complex language, developed over many centuries by the deaf community. It has its own grammatical structure so signs are in a different order to spoken language. Key Word Sign is a communication strategy for adults and children who can usually hear, but have difficulty speaking. It borrows signs from AUSLAN, but it is not a language in itself. Only the key words are signed, and speech is also used. This difference is important to know because of the long history of misunderstanding of sign language by hearing people. Please share this post around to raise awareness of this difference, and to show appreciation of the deaf community and their beautiful language!

22.01.2022 Core Words.... Everywhere, all the time!

22.01.2022 The phrase "I wonder...." is one of my favourites! This image is very helpful - where is your default parenting style?? I have seen parents anticipate every need of their child - a passive personality will love this and will happily sit back and watch the world "be done for them". I have seen parents enter Mexican stand-offs with their child - no one wins here, but a stubborn child will consider the digging in a win!! Middle ground - play, be happy, comment don't test.... but don't do everything for them. This is where language can develop

21.01.2022 Happy Easter everyone Perfect for core words in any form - key word sign, low tech boards, higher tech VOD. How will you communicate while you hunt this year?

20.01.2022 Key Word Sign posters are a great help for new learners, and a wonderful reminder for 'old hands' who may not have used a particular sign for a while. A great addition to all Kindys and Childcare Facilities!

20.01.2022 In recognition of Autism Awareness Month, were putting our industry-leading, LAMP Words for Life iOS app on sale again! Purchase the app for 50% OFF starting April 11th-15th. Mark your calendar to be sure you dont miss out. Terms and conditions apply: bit.ly/WFLAppApril2020

19.01.2022 Communication is such a core part of who we are.... individually and collectively. Anything that increases awareness of different means of communication is a good thing!! Do you have a favourite Auslan interpretor?

19.01.2022 If you have a little spare time... I highly recommend the training that these two ASD experts do.

19.01.2022 LAMP WFL families this is for you

18.01.2022 When encouraging children to speak, I advise parents to avoid getting into a "Mexican stand-off" while waiting for them to say a word. Giving wait time is VERY IMPORTANT, but is they are not speaking then simply say it for them and move on. This 'questions into comments' table shows how to do this too. If you ask a question - they need to answer = potential for frustration and communication breakdown! If you make a comment - play continues = potential for more interaction and communication opportunities!! So..... comment more. Question less. Any questions??

16.01.2022 I have once again had the privilege of being a judge in the Speech Pathology Australia Book of the Year Awards. Gold stickers now in place!! All shortlisted books and Nick Dent's winning Goat on a Boat are now in my community book exchange. Drop by and collect some amazing books!!

15.01.2022 Regardless of the AAC system you use, the activities here are fantastic!

14.01.2022 FB live: Join our singing story time with Amanda Hartmann, our senior Speech Pathologist. See AAC in action.

14.01.2022 Yes!! It IS for all of the things....

13.01.2022 TERM 4 * Dalby Speech Pathology will be working on a 9 week term this term, not 10. * If you have an NDIS review between now and Feb 2021 please advise me at your next session. These reviews are often bought forward to avoid the Christmas / NY period, and reports may be requested with little to no notice. Let's have them ready!!

12.01.2022 PLAY So.... you just play all day? I have been asked this before and the answer is YES :) As far as the 'lil people are concerned, they come to play. I, however, play with a purpose. They know no difference and the great thing about that is that they can then do plenty of homework without knowing it too So what is the difference between playing and playing with a purpose? I purposefully model speech or language targets and intentionally provide play opportunities that spontaneously lean towards those goals. It does not mean controlling the play. It does not mean controlling the child. Follow their lead and purposefully add onto what they are naturally doing.

11.01.2022 It is very exciting to have people back in for face-to-face appointments today, for those who choose to. Please take care as the footpath is being upgrading with the council's footpath stimulus program.

11.01.2022 https://www.facebook.com/2196898470592707/posts/2720039761611906/?d=null&vh=e Oh my

11.01.2022 AAC in action For anyone who knows me this is not my style!! My pet AAC would look more like In all reality this is what alternative communication is all about - respond consistently and the learning will happen - pets, little people or big people

10.01.2022 So....I have had a number of parents ask me how I am managing to work from home plus have 4 kids doing school at home. This is my "work room". See that tiny 1m square spot with the chair and laptop....that's where my Zoom adventures happen. See the rest....that's where Miss grade 2 happens. I apologise for any personal cameo appearances that she may grace us with .... watch this space We are all doing some new things and some old things differently. What are your tips??

08.01.2022 Literacy, AAC and Jane Farrell... if you move in the AAC circles and are interested in helping your child or students move into literacy then I could not recommend this course enough. Jane Farrell is an absolute expert (writes the text book type expert) and I cannot wait to learn from her directly.

07.01.2022 Current times and always... Whatever your best is, it is just fine right now :) At the moment people are saying "day by day", but with kids in the house doing school, therapy activities as well as their best sibling fight sessions.... it is more like "moment by moment". You'll feel like a Super-parent at some moments and utterly overwhelmed and out of control at others. Here's the thing - both the lab and the 'lil guy in this picture did get out of the mud. One's a bit me...ssier than the other, but they are both out :) Don't be afraid to ask for a hose off afterwards!! If you don't get speech homework done - that's OK!! If your kids are in their PJs during speech Zoom sessions - that's OK!! If you are in your PJs.... that's also OK Be real with your self as well as teachers and therapists. We will make adjustments. We will still figure out a way. Be kind to yourself Be kind to your kids

07.01.2022 AAC and literacy.... possible and possibly essential!! Imagine you lost your voice and needed to say something. Who'd text? Who'd grab a bit of paper? Who wouldn't!!! Writing is such an easy way to communicate, so let's make that possible for all https://facebook.com/events/s/aac-story-time-modeling-with-t/673780209870658/?ti=as

07.01.2022 What's your favourite Key Word Sign moment? I'll put mine in the comments...

07.01.2022 The last one... Giving kids a voice...

05.01.2022 Facial expressions and emotions - there are so many commercial resources around to help teach these, but this just might be my favourite!! The best part...kids can make their own which means talking about the emotions and what they look like on our face during the making and then also during the using. Win - Win, and they won't even know This will work well for tele-health sessions too, so I might just have to get my little people to make me one. And then master sharing with a document camera, but how hard can that be

05.01.2022 Signing Dads.... I've had a few at Key Word Sign workshops. If you know one, or are one, please be brave and click below.

05.01.2022 AAC training for parents....FREE!! Needless to say, get on board! PRC produces LAMP, so if you have a child who uses this system then this is definitely for you. The principles will be the same for all AAC systems however, so if you have a child who uses any AAC you will still benefit from these sessions. Did I say FREE???!!!???

05.01.2022 It's all in the planning.... AAC is not rocket science, but it will never "accidentally" happen. Plan for it, and amazing things can happen :)

04.01.2022 Covid Cleaning: Last week I attempted to "quarantine" toys after touching and introduce a rotation system. It was an epic fail It turns out your child's favourite toy is also another child's favourite toy. No news there, but I thought I could make it work..... wrong!! Sessions will now finish slightly early to allow for Covid cleaning. - 30 min sessions will allow a 5 min clean - 60 min sessions will allow a 10 min clean I thank you in advance for your understanding.

04.01.2022 These events are great fun and show some lovely modelling for you to use too.

03.01.2022 This is very clever!!! If you are wanting a low tech communication option in certain situations this is definitely a good option.

03.01.2022 Grab your device and follow along!!

02.01.2022 June is here! That means it's time for a new #ChallengeWeek! We all need practice to become better modelers of language. So challenge yourself and others this m...onth to be better AAC users with the #ChallengeWeek! Download available here: https://saltillo.com/chatcorner/content/62 #Saltillo #ChallengeWeek See more

02.01.2022 Term 2 Appointments Session times will remain the same for Term 2 as for Term 1, unless you request a change. Please contact me if you would like an alternate recurring appointment time for Term 2. Term 2 sessions will be conducted via video conferencing, until otherwise notified.

01.01.2022 This looks like something fun to try during these times!!

01.01.2022 Have a go... Miss 7 and I just did these together. Kids love these ones

01.01.2022 Lesser known features of Proloquo2Go. I cant wait for this....who else is going to register?
