09.01.2022 Flash Back- Here’s the story behind this shot - enjoy :) It was 2003, a month and a half after my mum passed away, and a month and a half before I made the conscious decision to win my First World Title. I remember that decision like it was yesterday, in the carpark of a Melbourne hospital, 20 minutes after she died. I was really a no one at that stage, in terms of a global competitor, but after what I went through and saw I was determined to change that. I trained all day fr...om sun up to sun down, nothing else except train, train, train, till the first comp in Tahiti. The swell was big, and before my heats I looked at photos of my mum before jumping off the boat, no one saw this, the photos were in my bag when I watched it. I wrote 1st place = mum on my board, again I kept this to my self and hid my board. Even took my mums ashes to Tahiti and had them with me. This wave was one of the bombs in the comp, alot of people have often said to me why did you do a peace sign? Well I actually thought I was too deep so it was a bit of a see you later kind of thing - ha. I was in a pretty abnormal state of mind and didn’t have much fear at the time. Then when I was in the tube and saw the lip throw out into the flats I thought, hang on I might be able to make this. I grabbed my rail and went for it. What most people don’t know is after this photo, I got lifted by the shock wave/foam ball big time. I remember going all the way to the roof of the barrel very slowly, as I kept going higher and higher I remember even turning my head sideways so I didn’t get clipped by the roof of the lip, and then I very slowly started coming down the other side of the shockwave/foam ball as it was spiting and coughing like a mad beast. I made the wave, got a 10 and won the comp, even got the cover shot - ha with the peace sign. I then went onto winning the World Title and another the next year. Without this wave I don’t think fate would have taken the same course, making this wave was the most important wave I have ever caught :) See more
