22.01.2022 RED DOG FESTIVAL It was my pleasure to celebrate Red Dog Festival on Saturday, a fantastic community celebration of 40 years since Red Dog was last seen wanderi...ng the Pilbara. Thank you to Lorraine Best from Dampier Transit Caravan Park who funded and organised the event with support from the Dampier Community Association, ABC Radio, Mark McLaren, Vicki Kuhn, Heathers Dog Grooming, Garys Unihire and the Mermaid Hotel; and thank you to all the Dampier community who came together to celebrate. Thank you to special guests for attending: Nancy Gillespie, the author of the original Red Dog book; and Dr Rick Fenny the vet who cared for Red Dog. People from all around the world visit the Pilbara because of Red Dogs legend. He has been immortalised through poetry, music, books and films. So it was my privilege to announce at the Festival that I have officially started the process of renaming the Karratha - Tom Price Road to the Red Dog Highway. The story of Red Dog is essentially a story about the Pilbara and the remarkable people who live here. It is fitting the Red Dog Highway goes through the heart of the Pilbara and will offer tourists a unique and wonderful experience. The Red Dog Paw campaign was also officially launched in the morning - if you take a photo at the Red Dog statue in Dampier, make sure you use the hashtag #reddogwalloffame to add your photo to the Red Dog Wall of Fame! #RedDog #RedDogFestival #reddogwalloffame #DampierCommunityAssociation #Dampier #RedDogStatue #TwilightMarkets #HamptonOval #Vet #DesertVet #Pilbara #RedDogVet #RickFenny #NancyGillespie #RedDogAuthor #RedDogTheMovie

09.01.2022 This is Nicholas Grays story; Hi Im Nick, I recently stayed at Dampier Transit Park with my dad and best mate Jock. We came all the way from Brisbane to have Jocks photo with Red Dog. This story all starts when I was a boy about 12 yrs. I watched a movie called Jock of the Bushveld its a tale of true friendship. A man saves a little red runt staffy from being drowned and raises him. They travel the country driving a bullock team and hunting. When I was 18yrs, I decid...ed to buy a staffy, a black one, but no luck. A friend of ours told us of a breeder they knew,so we went to see. The breeder had 3 pups left, two girls and a boy. The boy pup was tiny, the runt of the litter, . He was to be sold without papers as he had a funny tail. I was okay with that so I paid for him and named him Jock after the movie I had seen, when I was a boy. At six weeks old Jock fitted into a coffee mug, so cute. stay tunned.... See more

08.01.2022 cont... So, a trip of a lifetime was planned as I felt Jocks life and time with me was starting to shorten, Jock now almost 10 yrs. I decided to take him on a trip to have his photo taken with Red Dog in Dampier as well as his photo in every town we stopped in............................................................................. The Road Trip of two mates to cross the top end of Australia and home across the bottom. ... Now if you have ever met, or do meet Jock, hes a character and a lady s man with his baby seal eyes and ravishing charm, he wins over anyone he meets in seconds for a pat or a scratch......... Thank you for sharing your story Nick, it was great meeting you guys.. glad you had a safe trip home Lorraine Best (Dampier Transit Park manager) See more

02.01.2022 Cont... Everyday I would take Jock to the beach, he soon came to love the water and a friendship was made a tale of my own. Where Id go hed go, from laying at the gym waiting while I trained to late nights and weekends out fishing, to sneaking him out to the dams in a duffel bag so he could come skiing. When the movie RED Dog was released I was amazed at the similarity of my own story. A few years ago Jock was found to have cancer on one of his paws, most vets said the...y would have to take the paw off to be on the safe side, but whats a dog if he cant run or walk. I set out to find a specialist for answers, I found one who would help me, he said part of his paw would have to go but Jock would still be to able to walk and run. The cost was high but for my best mate there was no price tag too high or even considered for my best mate, the procedure was a success. Jock only lost one toe and part of his paw. One night at sea on our prawn trawler, I was thinking Ive spent a lot of Jocks life away working. Stay tuned....... See more
