21.01.2022 I had a slightly out of the ordinary job yesterday that required detailing the underfloor space of an old building. The very tight access and complete darkness of the subject area would have made undertaking the task close to impossible with conventional surveying equipment, so I opted to use our 3d Laser Scanner which has no issues of creating a 3D scan in complete darkness. The resulting model still needs to tie in with an existing detail survey of the property, meaning I ...needed to apply co-ordinates to several targets (derived from permanent survey marks in the adjacent streets) under the floor space with the total station which was no easy feat. Luckily there were just enough rotten floorboards to shoot a series of reflector-less laser shots down into the voids which I then used the laser dot to place scanning spheres under for the laser scanner to use as reference points. Jobs like this require a lot of improvisation and thinking on your feet. I really had no idea how I was going to achieve the job objective until I got there, and even then a lot of things had to go right for me like the rotten floorboards, my ladder being only just long enough to get into the floor space through the access hatch, and the access hatch being only just big enough to fit my equipment through. Taking my 800 lumin bike light to hang from one of the floor joists to provide some ambient light turned out to be a good idea too.
