25.01.2022 After five weeks of development in isolation and seclusion, Dancenorth keenly opened its doors in Townsville, to share the Tomorrow Makers 3 works with an invited audience. With support from the The Ian Potter Foundation , the Dancenorth Ensemble created solo works under the lens of creation in quiet solitude and reflection of the world now. One audience member commented: These performances were truly existential - life/death, growth, change, environment, function, culture. ...I am still talking about the performances - the spontaneity and form brilliant! Witnessing the amazing talent of these young dancers - I left the theatre feeling proud, privileged and awed, especially knowing that many Australians are not able to experience live performance at this time. Thank you!" . . . Images by Amber Haines See more

24.01.2022 Tomorrow Makers 3 audiences were treated to solo performances created by Dancenorth Ensemble in August 2020. The works came together under the lens of creation in quiet solitude and reflection of the world now, curated by Associate Artistic Director Amber Haines. . This week, we share Ashley McLellan’s work - LAGUNA . The body for living, for labour, for transmitting, for tearing down, ... for remembering, and intending, for letting go of A woman moves through a floating landscape and she asks you with her confusion to see her hidden messages Her cadence says, ‘I don’t want to have to tell you’ Because your senses are sharp and the moment is fresh . . . 23.01.2022 Dancenorth recently welcomed students and independent dancers from Townsville, Brisbane, Canberra and Adelaide to a week-long intimate collaboration and skills exchange with the Ensemble, Kyle Page and Amber Haines. In a time when travel and deep connection is difficult or elusive, Dancenorth celebrated the opportunity to support and engage with emerging artists. One of these artists wrote - So... there’s this place right. Up north, where you soak up the sun and your body fe...els amazing. And in this little place, with its palm trees and sunny beaches, is an old brick building, where you go to dance. You’ll walk in expecting to learn a little bit of technique and a maybe some stuff from some of their shows, but nothing can prepare you for the experience within. The dancers are so generous and the space is so safe, you can find new vulnerabilities as a dancer, artist and human being. You’ll find new not only new ways to move, but new ways to interact with the environment around you, as well as a deepened sense of connection, understanding and appreciation for the world we live in. ... #QUT #AdelaideCollegeoftheArts #ACPA #TransitDance with support from The Ian Potter Foundation . . . The pair gathered in the theatre with Dancenorth staff and a few close friends to share explorations from ‘Fertile Ground’, their first collaboration as choreographers. The work investigates shifting landscapes, a micro cityscape of cement bricks. Provoking conversations about human impact on the environment, our compulsive need to leave a footprint on nature and our persistence to conquer, outlive and survive in the face of crisis. 14.01.2022 awake 25-31 October Surfclub Headland, 80 The Strand Bookings essential: nafaawake.eventbrite.com.au .... . . awake sprung out of the silence and contemplation that has been demanded of us recently. Townsville, cradled in abundant nature, invited us to connect more deeply to its natural beauty and simplicity during that quiet time. So much of the ocean, the air we breathe and the ground we walk on is ignored; taken for granted. Our desire in the sharing of awake is to celebrate and bring nature to the foreground. To create a moment to share the day’s beginning, the sun, the sea-spritzed morning air with the people of Townsville. . . . Image by Amber Haines See more

13.01.2022 Dancenorth is delighted to have innovative dance artists and choreographers Ashleigh Musk and Michael Smith in our studio space again this week. Ashleigh and Michael are our first 2020 Dance artists in residence, joining us as part of the Dancenorth 2020 A.R.T. Program, generously supported by The Ian Potter Foundation. "Week two. Bricks are getting lighter, bodies are feeling stronger. A weekend of escapes into the surrounds of Townsville, river and ocean swims, sunsets an...d gazing at the horizon moments that drive home our need to sink into nature. To let go and be supported by the earth. Bringing this knowledge into the studio, week two has been (so far) a time of things falling into place, as well as questions on top of more questions on top of more questions. The deeper we sink, we are experimenting with layers of ideas and images. How to be clear and ambiguous at all times. Clearly saying what we mean, while simultaneously riding a wave of subtlety. And we continue" Ashleigh and Michael have developed a unique approach to contemporary dance and performance, drawing from their individual experiences of contemporary society and physical place/space. Their current exploration 'Fertile Ground' involves physically transforming the studio space at Dancenorth with 27 Besser blocks, a key media for realising their visually dynamic and physically demanding work. 11.01.2022 Dancenorth were excited to welcome the extraordinary Jenni Large, Georgia Rudd and Michael Smith into our studio space for the last week...as part of our inaugural 4 Walls and a Floor program. 4 Walls and a Floor is a free space opportunity provided to independent artists, movers and makers. Dancenorth is committed to providing opportunities for artists across the country to create work in the incredible pristine environs of Tropical North Queensland a landscape thoroughly... conducive to creativity. 4 Walls and a Floor is a discretionary program available to Australian movement based artists all year-round, dependent upon opportunity and availability in our annual schedule. In any year, the program may offer access opportunities to either of the key spaces in the Dancenorth facility; our 180 seat theatre or our multipurpose studio. 4 Walls and a Floor aims to offer artists and makers access to space within a professional Dance Company facilityproviding a place for reflection, research and development and creative inspiration. We joined Jenni Large, Michael Smith and Georgia Rudd in their organic garden, as they cultivate questions surrounding deluded power, the climate crisis and overidentification or ‘role-playing’. "Welcome to The Gardeners...the fertilisation of this new plant is rooted in the world of ‘real, fake-real’. 02.01.2022 Dancenorth is thrilled to welcome inspirational dance artists and choreographers Ashleigh Musk and Michael Smith to our studio space for a two week residency. Ashleigh and Michael are our first 2020 Dance artists in residence, joining us as part of the Dancenorth 2020 A.R.T. Program, generously supported by The Ian Potter Foundation. "We have left the confines of our isolation in Brisbane/Gold Coast to embrace the 18 hour drive for our A.R.T residency, 18 hours of sugarcane..., mangoes, cattle properties, beautiful trees and an assortment of very large items. While here we are developing ‘Fertile Ground’, our first collaboration as choreographers. The work is shifting landscapes, a micro cityscape of cement bricks. We are having a lot of conversations about human impact on the environment, our compulsive need to leave a footprint on nature and our persistence to conquer, outlive and survive in the face of crisis. A day in the studio might include researching the properties of cement, looking at brutalist architecture, singing Dolly Parton and a lot of lifting, rolling, swinging, stacking and playing with the cement bricks and our bodies. Townsville as a location is branded as paradise - a city in the tropics with direct evidence of human impacts on nature, of built vs natural utopias. There are abounding contrasts and contradictions of this place - just looking out the studio windows at the contrast of Cootharinga (Castle Hill) on one side, with the stark, circular, brutalist nature of the Grand Chancellor Hotel on the other. The form of this place is definitely inspiring us." Ashleigh and Michael have developed a unique approach to contemporary dance and performance, drawing from their individual experiences of contemporary society and physical place/space. Their current exploration 'Fertile Ground' involves physically transforming the studio space at Dancenorth with 27 Besser blocks, a key media for realising their visually dynamic and physically demanding work.
