25.01.2022 "For the first time, from a theoretical $100 to spend on reducing illicit drug use, people allocated more money to education than law enforcement...". Perceptions are changing =) , more Australians are wanting the promotion of health, rather than to punish people who use drugs. 22.01.2022 Alongside the pandemic, Canada has also been experiencing an overdose crisis. Part of this is caused by dangerous unknown substances in the drug supply. The Centre on Drug Policy Evaluation launched Toronto's drug checking service one year ago to help provide information to consumers and researchers. Toronto’s drug checking service offers people who use drugs timely and detailed information on the contents of their drugs, helping them to make more informed decisions. This ...service also shares information on Toronto’s unregulated drug supply with harm reduction workers and clinicians to help them tailor the care they provide to people who use drugs, while informing research and policy. Every other week, results from samples checked by Toronto’s drug checking service are combined and presented using the graphs [at the website]. 22.01.2022 Research into the use of psychedelics such as psilocybin and LSD in controlled settings has found significant therapeutic potential. It's interesting research that is opening doors to new psychotherapy practices. Two studies found reduced rates in depression severity, suicidal ideation, and experiential avoidance four weeks after taking psychedelics. With hundreds of millions of dollars in investment flowing into psychedelics companies, a renaissance in the field is o...ccurring. Researchers hope these findings will lead to better therapeutic modalities for mental health disorders. https://bigthink.com/mind-brain/psychedelics-depression Research on these substances in controlled settings is not the same thing as taking a substance bought from the black market in an uncontrolled setting. Understanding how to prepare and how to manage an experience (both before and after) is important. The potential risks of using psychedelics are low, but not non-existent. Risks are nearly always increased when mixing other drugs or alcohol with a psychedelic. Visit the TripSit website to view their resources on risks of mixing drugs

21.01.2022 Psychedelic Research Panel | Subscribe to the Entheogenesis Australis - EGA - Planting Psychedelic Seeds YouTube page for Australian-made content focused on ethnobotany and plant medicines. The 'Garden States Microdose Livestream' was recorded on Sunday 5th July. Australia has lagged behind many parts of the world in studying the therapeutic benefits of psychedelics in academic and research settings. Thankfully, with decades of advocacy from the community and a few dedicated... organisations (such as PRISM: Psychedelic Research in Science & Medicine) that have fought for the right to explore the potential of altered states of consciousness for the wellbeing of humankind, the tides are now changing. The panel explores the current state of psychedelic research in Australia from experts in the field, casting an eye ahead to what the future in this field might hold in Australia, as well as exploring philosophies on the use of psychedelic and ethnobotanical medicine. The panel has contributions from Vince Polito (Macquarie University), Margaret Ross (St Vincent’s Hospital), Martin Williams (PRISM/EGA), Chris Letheby (University of Western Australia) and Steve Bright (PRISM/Edith Cowan University).

20.01.2022 On many occasions, I’ve wanted to go to a doof or an unofficial party with friends and have seen statements or disclaimers from the organisers to the effect of, ‘GHB is unwelcome at this party'. This implies that smoking a joint on the dancefloor is socially acceptable but if I’m seen anywhere having a dose of GHB, I’m considered a less valuable member of the community. Worse, I know the artists and promoters personally, and at face value I’m their equal. When it comes ...to my substance use, that’s another story. That puts fear in me about being open about my use and the risks inherent in asking for support from my friends. I’ve since formed the habit of completely removing myself from the party to have a dose in order to ensure that I’m safe from judgement and exclusion. I would prefer to be able to share my use with someone for safety, but I don’t feel I can always do that. 19.01.2022 According to the Global Drug Survey #COVID19 edition, use of substances commonly referred to as 'party drugs' are down. "Of those who used illegal drugs in the previous 12 months, MDMA, cocaine and ketamine were the most likely to have decreased since before the pandemic. Lack of access to nightclubs, festivals and parties was the most common reason for the change." Harm reduction is still just as important, even when there aren't any parties on. 18.01.2022 The team of researchers and clinicians at @AOD Media Watch want to educate and work with journalists to report more objectively using science and evidence, rather than perpetuating myths, opinions and moral panic. The Herald Sun has selectively used data which demonstrates a bias against the MSIR in the three articles published on the 12th of February 2020. This deserved to be taken seriously by the Australian Press Council (APC). Following from our story of 4th June 2020 that described (the authors) efforts to hold the Daily Telegraph to account through an adjudication process with the APC, (the author) made a new complaint regarding this reporting by the Herald Sun. This time, the complaint was simply dismissed by the APC. Read the full article for more...

12.01.2022 For the International #SupportDontPunish Day of Action tomorrow, Students for Sensible Drug Policy Australia are bringing you Part 1 of an ongoing conversation about how Australia’s War on Drugs disempowers and silences our country’s most marginalised. What’s going on with drugs in Australia? Just like countries all around the world, Australia has its very own War on Drugs. For decades, the USA has led a global system of over-policing, incarceration, stigma and prohibition. This system has been deeply embedded within Australia, yet Australians rarely talk about it with the seriousness it deserves. Australia’s own experience of this Global War on Drugs needs uncovering. Support. Don't Punish.

07.01.2022 Harm reduction history from Switzerland Needle and syringe programs were controversial during the 1980s, but as HIV spread, the positive impacts of such programs were seen and harm reduction (rather than HIV) spread. Since the onset of the ‘80s, immunologist Peter Grob had been inoculating people who used drugs against hepatitis and carrying out blood testing for epidemiological field studies. Supported by the city of Zürich, he could now install a permanent needle exch...ange, ZIPP-AIDS (Zürich Intervention Pilot Project against AIDS), in the Platzspitz public toilet. Approximately 10,000 sterile injection utensils were handed out daily, in exchange for used supplies, which were then properly disposed of. ZIPP-AIDS also offered anonymous HIV testing. https://filtermag.org/zurich-switzerland-harm-reduction/

07.01.2022 Despite a recent statement by Justice Little, the two NZ referendums are distinguishable: assisted dying was binding and the bill had gone through parliament; the cannabis referendum was non-binding. So their government could introduce the cannabis control bill (or other reforms) irrespective of whether the results are yes or no (and the preliminary results are pretty much 50:50)? Might it be time to put health first and make cannabis reforms in NZ anyway? Final results are d...ue 6 Nov. In 2013 Uruguay became the first nation to establish a regulated cannabis market. The Government passed a bill to establish a regulated cannabis market, even though it was supported by a minority of citizens (28%), because of concerns about organised crime, to reclaim trade, and to separate the cannabis market out from other illegal drugs that may have a higher risk profile. https://www.stuff.co.nz//live-referendum-results-how-did-n Read more about the social, health and economic benefits Urguay has experienced from implementing reforms in: Transform Drug Policy ‘Cannabis legalisation in Uruguay: public health and safety over private profit’ (2017).

05.01.2022 November 1st is International Drug Users Day. It’s a time for our communities to call for an end to the ‘War on Drugs’, in favour of prioritising health. Prohibition has not slowed drug use. It’s costly and reduces wellness. Increased education, support and treatment options promote health. ... Creating some regulated drug markets is another health promotion solution, which will take time to establish. What can be done immediately in Australia is the implementation of drug checking/‘pill testing’ as an accessible health service to reduce the harm caused by unregulated drug use. The advent of Covid has disrupted all unregulated drug markets, the supply is more unpredictable and fentanyl has recently been detected in Australia. That number will surely be much higher now, given widespread advocacy and Canadians’ cultural shift around law enforcement and criminalization.
