18.01.2022 LEPTOSPIROSIS ALERT There are recent reports of an outbreak of leptospirosis, a previously rare rodent-spread disease, in eastern Melbourne. Sydney is also experiencing an outbreak of larger proportions. It is often fatal if contracted by dogs. Vaccination is available and is needed for all dogs. The disease can also be potentially passed to humans through contaminated pet urine. WHAT IS LEPTOSPIROSIS?... Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread in the urine of rats and potentially wildlife. The bacteria can contaminate still waterways, marshy areas and, if conditions are favourable, the organism can survive long periods within these moist environments. Dogs can become infected from a rat bite or from eating a rat, and from drinking rat urine-contaminated water or licking contaminated soil. WHAT CAN I DO? A vaccine is available at our clinic that is effective against most (though not all) forms of the bacteria. To provide protection, an initial course of TWO VACCINES IS REQUIRED, given two (up to four) weeks apart. Annual boosters are then required to maintain protection. Like any vaccine, side effects are occasionally seen such as lethargy and loss of appetite. We recommend you avoid walking dogs in areas rats and mice may inhabit, as well as boggy wetlands. Be alert for early disease signs listed above. See more

15.01.2022 The summer heat is upon us! Our canine friends struggle to keep cooler than us, so a few quick tips on making them a bit more comfortable in this hot weather. - Offer an ice pack or wet towel to lay on.... - Add ice cubes to the water dish. - Offer access to a wading pool with shallow, cool water. - Offer access to cool shade by stringing up a tarp, cloth, or use a shade screen. - Bring a collapsible water dish on your walks. - Replace a portion of their regular diet with canned food. - Avoid walking on hot pavement, it can burn our doggies toes! - Early morning or evening playtimes, exercise, and walks are best. - Give your dog some homemade frozen treats. Always ensure they have access to shade and water! STAY COOL AND HAVE A LOVELY AFTERNOON
13.01.2022 Meet Brutus the Boerboel At 1.5 years of age Brutus weighs a whopping 58kg. The Boerboel is a very large domesticated working dog weighing up to 70-90kgs. The name Boerboel is Afrikaans in its origin and can be translated to farmers dog. Boer is Afrikaans for an African farmer of Dutch decent and boel meaning bull. Muscular, exceedingly strong and highly loyal the South African Mastiff also has one of the most powerful jaws in the world, exerting more than 450 po...unds of pressure per square inch when they bite. What does this mean? Well, a lion and Great White Shark exert around 600 pounds of pressure per square inch Training from an early age is important for this breed; they are large dogs and first-time owners may find the Boerboel a bit of a challenge. For this reason its important that strong discipline be introduced early and maintained for the Boerboel puppy. See more
