24.01.2022 The City of Greater Dandenong Band family is very saddened to hear of the passing of former Musical Director, Graeme Hilson. Graeme was MD of the Band from 1983 through to 1989. During this time he lead the band in their 1985 B Grade National Band Championships win. The Band won the test piece ‘Northwest Passage’, the own choice with ‘Suite Gothique’, and the hymn with ‘Crimond’. Also in 1985 Graeme produced the first Mayoral sponsored charity concert at Robert Blackwood Hall featuring many prestigious performers such as Malcolm Gray as compere, popular children’s entertainer - Franciscus Henri, and the National Boys Choir. The Mayoral Charity Concerts continued for a number of years with resounding success under the direction of Graeme - they were always a highlight of the Band calendar. Our sincere condolences to Graeme's family.

18.01.2022 For the last decade the Band has spent Easter Saturday marching in different cities all over Australia as part of the National Band Championships. We have become very well known for our entertaining Change Of Direction on the Street Parade, taking out the highest overall score for the Change a number of times! 16.01.2022 The City of Greater Dandenong Band was disappointed to hear that the 2020 Australian National Band Championships due to be held in Perth, WA over the Easter long weekend has been cancelled due to the impact of COVID-19. Dandenong Band has been preparing for the competition over the past several weeks and we were very much looking forward to the event. However, of course, population health and safety has to come first and we know that this was not a decision organisers took lightly. We would like to thank the National Band Council of Australia Inc. and the Western Australian Band Association organising committee for all of their hard work and efforts in putting together what we are sure would have been an amazing event.

13.01.2022 Are you running out of things to watch on YouTube while in lockdown? Well look no further! Here is a newly uploaded video of our performance in the 2019 National Band Championships Parade of Bands! Led by Drum Major Cameron Sanders and celebrating the Lion King's 25th anniversary we performed Cameron's special arrangement of the Lion King - complete with the presentation of Simba at Pride Rock!

13.01.2022 What a wonderful night we had at the Dandenong Carols! Thank you to everyone that came along and shared in the festivities.

12.01.2022 A big shout out to our friends at Creativity Australia and With One Voice Greater Dandenong who are still delivering their inclusive With One Voice Choir programs to their members and guests - online! In light of recent circumstances, they were forced to suspend in-person gatherings and come up with something to keep everyone singing together during this time of hardship. They have enlisted the help of their amazing conductors 16 of them to be precise, based all around Australia to deliver LIVE online sessions every night of the week. Each weeknight, they will be offering at least two 30 minute LIVE broadcasts with a With One Voice Conductor. This means you have 16 different Conductors to choose from. You can tune in to as many sessions as you please and sing along at home to warm ups, tongue twisters and much loved songs!

10.01.2022 Today's Brilliant Bunnings Buskers!

10.01.2022 A very interesting and accurate article about why we turn to music in times of crisis written by Michelle Langley and Leah Coutts, published on the World Economic Forum. "With constraints on our movements and general way of life becoming more and more restricted, we are feeling a loss of control not experienced since the second world war. In being confined to our homes, we are missing our normal social support from friends and family, and our freedom to control our day-to-day... lives. But making music provides a means to regain control. Music creates a sense of belonging and participation."

10.01.2022 Backing up last night's Dandenong Carols with a fun-filled day of caroling at Dandening Market (10am-12pm) and at Bunnings Springvale (11am-1pm) and also running the Bunnings Springvale sausage sizzle fundraiser all day! Please come and say Hi is you're in the area!

08.01.2022 We were back caroling at Dandenong Market again this morning and followed it up with some more caroling at an aged care home where one of our Life Members - Miriam, resides. It has been a big week of community banding, starting with a Christmas Concert at a local Over 55's Lifestyle Village, the Dandenong Carols in Harmony Square, and caroling at Springvale Bunnings, twice at Dandenong Market, and at a local aged care home. Not to mention running a Bunnings sausage sizzle f...undraiser! Thank you to all of our band members and supporters who have donated their time over the past week to give back to our community through the joy of music. This is what community banding is all about.

08.01.2022 Today we are deeply saddened to hear the news of the passing of a true legend and gentleman of the brass band community, Ian Mathers B.E.M. Ian passed away peacefully, aged 89, at Angliss Hospital on Thursday night following a massive stroke on Wednesday morning. He was not in pain and was with family when he passed away. Ian's contribution to Kew Band as well as brass banding not only in Victoria but across Australia can never be overstated and the City of Greater Dandenong ...Continue reading

06.01.2022 LEST WE FORGET The City of Greater Dandenong Band are honoured to remember on this day, above all days, those who have given their all in the service of their country. Unlike in previous years, we are not able to as a band pay those respects to the brave young men and women in whose memory this day is dedicated.... In previous years we have performed numerous services on various days for a number of RSL organisations. These include dawn services, numerous ANZAC parades and other like minded ceremonies ... but today is different. Today, many of our members continued to offer what they can as a mark of respect by performing in their driveways at dawn the Last Post and the Rouse observing a minutes silence accordingly. This was done far and wide across our suburbs and we are pleased to acknowledge the other members of the public who participated as well in acknowledging how much this day means to the Australian people. Although not quite the same, it was all we can manage in these testing times. We look forward to 'business as usual' in the not too distant future and to once again, as a band showing our respect and doing what we do best to honour our servicemen and women - and their predecessors - as they continue to protect our freedom. We look forward to once again marching proudly as a member organisation of our community and performing our civic duty at services for all ANZACs past and present. Lest we forget.

06.01.2022 The Band commemorated ANZAC Day a little differently this year. For the past 60+ years we have participated in local services with the Noble Park RSL, Springvale RSL, and Dandenong RSL Branches. This year our Band members and supporters remembered and showed their respect to all our service men and women past and present, in smaller, more private services across Victoria and interstate. Many of our members played the Last Post at the end of their driveways, and stood with th...eir neighbours to remember Them. Our Musical Director - Jamie Lawson, played the Last Post in the Melbourne Docklands for the residents in surrounding apartment towers standing on their balconies. Dandenong Band Honour Wall and Life Member - Alan Collard - who last year made local news headlines for providing bugle calls at nine separate ANZAC services at age 80, again made headlines this year for the private Dawn Service he conducted in his street. Alan was joined by his Grade 6 neighbour Isabella who recited her poem - Stand Tall - for which she won the Glen Eira City Council 2019 My Brother Jack Literacy Award. Although this year was a little different to ‘normal’, many of our members and supporters have commented on how special and touching their ANZAC Services were for them this year. Lest We Forget.

05.01.2022 Congratulations to our youngest tuba player - Ethan Sellers, who placed third in the Victorian Bands' League' State Solo & Ensemble Championships this year! Ethan performed Introduction and Dance by J.E Barat in the Junior Bass Tuba Section. For the first time ever, the Championships were held online - which means you can check out Ethan's performance on YouTube! We are so proud of Ethan and can't wait to be back rehearsing and performing together again.

03.01.2022 Festive fun at Dandenong Market!

03.01.2022 Flashback(Good)Friday! Well today we were meant to be performing at our eleventh consecutive Australian National Band Championships, sadly instead of being in Perth we are all isolating at home. So to help pass the time and for your enjoyment, here are the official (mostly) photos from the last 20 Nationals we have attended!... Pop Quiz for all the brass bandies out there - comment on each photo with the Test Piece for each grade that year - no cheating! To get things started, in the 1980 photo you can see our Band burning the test piece - Volcano! Ironically, in the town of Mt Gambier - the home of the Blue Lake volcano which was likely the most recent volcanic eruption on the Australian mainland!

02.01.2022 You've still got time for a Sneaky Saturday Snag in Springvale! Here's our afternoon crew of master chefs at Bunnings Springvale!

02.01.2022 Another lovely caroling session at Dandenong Market this morning, we'll be back at 10am tomorrow for our last session of 2019! Hope to see you there!
