20.01.2022 This was the last scene written for THE DEMON only shortly before we began to shoot. Originally, we had The Demon drifting onto the middle of the road and almo...st getting run over, but realised that might be a little ambitious / dangerous for such a little film with basically no budget. Instead, one night when I couldn't sleep, an idea came to me and I immediately wrote the full scene at around 2am. First thing upon waking, I emailed it to Lee EL Mason who immediately agreed to play the Roman character. He was soon joined by #jacobryanmachin and Brian 'Sol' Bishop. Ironically, it became the first scene we shot for the film... making it the first scene I would direct as a filmmaker... at 4am on Dandenong Rd in Windsor... while laying down for most of the scene... the things you get away with when you're the boss! ;-) Admittedly, most of the work as a "director" took place in the days prior, so during each take I was mostly assessing performances by ear as we also did not have access to a playback monitor for this particular scene. Yet, I knew each of these boys were nailing it every time. We also had some visitors arrive just as we were about to begin a take... and they even brought their own red and blue lights. It seems the passing traffic were a little concerned for my welfare, and decided to take action. Thankfully, the attending officers were more relieved than us when they discovered it was just a film shoot. These are just some of the challenges that filmmakers face when trying to pull their projects together, but you have to love them. My mantra on set was "nothing is a problem, it's just a challenge to make the film better." And for this scene in particular, it could not have rung more true. I hope you enjoy. . . 17.01.2022 On July 20, 2004, I sat down with a Stein of beer in the Staromstské námstí (Old Town Square) in Prague and began to write a story. 13 years on and I am still going, admittedly in phases between other projects... However, I've now decided to unleash it from my computer and into the cyberworld... from those who have read it to date, the feedback is that is has the vibe of 'Stranger Things' and 'Stand by Me' but with an authentic Australian voice... anyway, if you are somewhat interested, then click to read on, it's free :-) ... 11.01.2022 A little while back I was fortunate to combine two great passions while working on the ABC show 'The Warriors'. In week 2 of production I came within mm of rupturing knee ligaments after it buckled pretty bad while setting up some football scenes... just a case of an old man trying to relive his youth :-) ... But thankfully I managed to get thru the full shoot ok, even though it took 6 months to get back to running properly again. It was great fun and really appreciated the... opportunity to work with an awesome cast, crew and production team. Anyway, here's a selection of my scenes from the show. Enjoy...
11.01.2022 Hi folks, my most recent film is hot off the press... in this one, I went a few steps further and not only wrote and acted, but also produced and directed. 10.01.2022 A short excerpt from Frankie Toothloose... CHAPTER 9 There was a knock on the door, but the hotel manager setting up inside ignored the drunk looking for his morning fix. The man on the outside had been standing on the other side of the road for several hours already, swaying from one side to the other. He was unshaven, his clothes were ragged, and from the reaction of those who walked past it was unlikely he had cleaned any time recently. Not exactly what you would consider ...good for business. The knocking continued a few more minutes before the old man collapsed in the doorway. Damn it, groaned the manager. He walked to the doorway and unlatched the bolt. Get up you old bastard, and move on! Little reaction came from the fallen man. I said to move on, he repeated angrily. Still no reaction. The barman ran his hand through his hair and glanced around. There were few other people in the area, and those that were appeared to be preoccupied. He knelt low and whispered in the stranger’s ear. Listen pal, one more chance to get up and go. He was fed up with having his time wasted and had a desire to return to his job proper. Yet the grounded man continued to lay there under duress. He managed to turn his head and look up, barely able to make out the managers face only centimetres away. One thing he did notice, however, was the ferocity in the manager’s eyes which seemed to be enraged with fire. Taking another look around, the manager returned to standing and forced his right foot hard into the visitor’s ribs. He heard the wince, the man remained. With the second kick, a slight reaction stirred from the victim, who rose to his knees and slurred some words to his aggressor. You had your chances. Get outa the doorway, you’re not getting a drink here. We don’t serve your kind. If only the manager could have understood his request for water. Slowly, the man crawled from the doorway with fresh blood dripping out his mouth. He clambered across the road, struggling for breath while still on hands and knees.
