24.01.2022 I am building the perfect house and why it's exactly the same as building the perfect business

24.01.2022 Burn the Boats I have recently just made a very significant professional decision (it should be finalised this week) that will thrust me into uncertainty and challenge me to my core. I have shed predictability and comfort for the unknown. This decision reminded me of an insight I learnt from Tony Robbins last year. If you want to make real change in any area of life then you must make a decision and shift the mindset from ‘I should’ to ‘I must’. You need to ‘burn the boats’... so the option of retreating is no longer available. Burning the boats ensures you embark on your decision wholeheartedly and with absolute commitment. It means you are ‘all in’ and unwavering commitment is the only approach. Hernan Cortes adopted this approach as he embarked on his conquest of Mexico. He faced insurmountable odds as he embarked on this treacherous mission. His unpredictable decision to burn his boats gave his soldiers two options: die or become victorious. This steeled his soldiers and ensured that retreat was no longer an option. They operated with 100% commitment and were victorious against all the odds. I see many people in business making decisions with their boats intact. They start a new business but keep their full time job. They seek investors but don’t invest their own funds. They strangle innovation as they reluctantly only make minor changes to their strategy. This showcases a lack of belief and commitment. It allows you to hold back and not pursue the decision with the same dedication had you burned your boats. When you burn your boats you reach a new level of relentlessness that enables you to progress at a faster rate. You increase your chances of striking gold and moving with fervour towards your dreams.

23.01.2022 Are you tapping into your Zone of Genius? Daniel Henderson & Kevin Frazier

23.01.2022 Reinventing yourself You need to innovate and evolve if you want to grow. Consumer demands shift and the market moves at a frenetic pace. If you aren’t responding to these changes then you will be devoured by your faster moving competition. My parents owned a print factory when I was growing up. It was a successful family business that had been operating for over 80 years. However, the industry had undergone a radical shift with print technology advances. They were too late ...in changing their business model and this industry revolution swallowed their business. Kodak was a powerhouse and the world leader in print photography and film. However, it didn’t pivot or alter its strategy when the world moved to digital technology. It resisted change and it was too late by the time they finally did respond. Kodak was one of the world’s most valuable brands and they are now a shadow of the great company they were. Contrast that with Apple who reoriented their business from computers to hand held devices. They envisioned change and reinvented themselves accordingly. This shift has led to Apple being the world’s most valuable company. One of the best decisions I ever made was to move my fitness business from primarily one on one to training to semi-private sessions. This enabled me to attract and retain more clientele and increase our margins. The business was renewed and I implemented services that were ahead of their time. Semi-private training was very much in its infancy but I could see its enormous potential. Our competition was still regurgitating the same old services whilst we were being progressive and challenging norms. At FTI, we are currently developing a new model of education delivery that is truly visionary and will enhance our impact among fitness professionals. Our business has matured, the demand for easily accessible, high quality and cost-effective education modules is high and we need to respond accordingly. Continuing with the status quo is predictable and comfortable. However, I do believe that taking the initiative to challenge ourselves with the innovation and implementation of novel ideas despite the inherent risks of change will result in FTI leaving a more sizeable imprint within the industry Are you being complacent in your business or are you exploring innovation? Are you continually researching consumer and industry trends and shifting accordingly? Don’t be eaten up by your faster moving competition. Be ahead of the curve and implement with action, commitment and conviction.

22.01.2022 Bouncing Back You start the week full of passion, purpose and excitement to propel your business forward only to be steamrolled by challenge after challenge. The eagerness and zest vanish and you are left picking up the pieces. You try to regather some iota of momentum amongst the storm of obstacles. This is the business rollercoaster It is not always fun, joyful and constant action. Then there are days where you feel flat, frustrated and defeated. There are other days whe...n you don’t feel like ‘hustling’ and you just want to put your feet up and consume an icy cold beer or glass of wine. It's important to remember and feel reassured that the low days are a normal part of running a business. Despite the countless motivational posters telling you otherwise, it is ok to not be ‘on fire’ every single minute of the week. It is helpful to talk to colleagues, mentors or friends who run businesses during these times as their similar experiences can be helpful in normalising the difficult periods and can reduce any tendency to catastrophise. Reassurance from those you trust can help restore the balance by minimising a negative headspace. These periods actually serve you and add tremendous value if you welcome them. It is in these periods that you gain terrific insights and clarity and reconnect to your vision. You identify potential opportunities to explore, new remedies to problems and strategies to optimise performance. You rediscover the importance of your purpose and you are reinvigorated to see it come back to life. Are you embracing these difficult periods or are you letting them overwhelm you? Are you using these periods to do the hard thinking that will move your business forward? Social media will tell you otherwise but challenges and frustration are all part of the business owner experience. You shouldn’t feel guilty or insignificant. Instead, uncover the lessons, reorientate the ship and move onwards and upwards.

22.01.2022 Are you making the same decisions over & over and expecting a different result? Have you ever been in a situation where you make decisions that don’t serve you? You make them over and over again hoping for a different result but the outcome never changes. The decisions become habitual in nature and they rob you of a positive outcome. This is a very common tendency and it surfaces in many different areas of life. You may have experienced it in relationships, business or in yo...ur pursuits of a healthier body. I have experienced this on many occasions. One specific area that was particularly impactful was my people management. I like to think the very best of people and I therefore assume that they will share my enthusiasm and dedication for achieving an outcome. I also have an avoidance for difficult conversations so I let things slide. This assumption paired with my reluctance for the difficult conversations was hugely problematic as team members were not delivering results. I continually made the decision to not address the situation or the team member and the issues compounded. I was hopeful things would just change on their own but that wasn’t the case. It wasn’t until I faced the issues head on did things change. However, that took an acknowledgement that the decisions I had previously made were deficient. They were impeding my growth and were a disservice to the company and team member. Where in life are you experiencing dissatisfaction? Are you making the same choices over and over again and nothing is changing? This is where you need to take responsibility for the current position and then adopt a new approach. I shifted my approach and team members delivered above and beyond my expectations. It demanded a level of introspection, ownership and courage. Without doing so, I would still be spinning my wheels and lamenting the predicament I was in. Don’t hope things will just change on their own. Make a different decision and address the issue at hand. It may be uncomfortable, challenging and demanding but it will be worthwhile. You will feel a sense of liberation and the results will be invaluable.

21.01.2022 It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives. It is the one that is most adaptable to change. Charles Darwin Change is an inevitable constant in all facets of life. We often try to avoid change at all costs but our attempts are often futile as we will no doubt encounter it at some stage. However, not all change is a threat as our brain would like us to perceive. In fact, change can serve us and is often needed for us to evolve a...nd grow. Certainty is one of our 6 basic human needs according to Tony Robbins. You can see this in the behaviour of many people. They strive for consistency, predictability and security. They are risk averse in their careers, investments and relationships. They would rather maintain the status quo even if they are dissatisfied in a particular area of life. The concept of change is too daunting and often leads to overwhelm. I am a person who often craves certainty. I am slow to change even when it is blindingly obvious that this is the best solution forward. The sale of my business last year represented the most significant professional change I have embarked on since I left my comfortable full-time job 9 years ago. It took considerable introspection to realise that this was the best move for both the business and my development. I sacrificed immense security for the opportunity to grow and be challenged. Fear is often associated with change. This fear gnaws away and it builds up anxiety as we become overawed by the unknown. You need to battle the fear of failure, self-doubt, potential loss and guilt. These will rear their ugly head and need to be silenced for change to take place. You need to focus on the bigger picture and act with an element of faith in the process. You need to believe that this is the best way forward even though there are no guarantees. Is the reluctance for change holding you back in life? Does the idea of change suffocate you and you therefore resist it at all costs? Change is often needed for growth. It is through change that you face uncertainty and learn about your character. Change can serve you but ONLY if you see it as a productive process that develops your resolve and you can identify the lessons from the process. Change will always be present and it will often be beyond our control. However, our response to change is always within our control. We can either accept change or be handicapped by it. The choice is yours.

21.01.2022 Building a World Class Culture Once upon a time, Sunday nights were filled with a sense of longing for Friday again as I would lament the return of the weekly grind. Whilst I liked the nature of my job, I was never able to fully enjoy it because of the toxic workplace environment I was performing in. As a result of this over time I lost motivation to be there and this stifled my ability to grow and develop and when I found myself doing more clock watching than anything else ...I knew it was time to move on. My personal training studio was a work environment where we were all invested in the vision of ‘changing lives through exercise’. The place oozed positive energy and the team and members were excited to be there. We loved hanging out with another both within and outside the studio and we all grew and developed together. It was a place where we did our best work, went above and beyond in every element and supported one another. Workplace culture is a decisive factor in the success of a business. It can make everything in the business easier if you get it right. Culture is not built around a pool table or beer fridge but rather it is an alignment of vision and values. A world class culture is where your team members and community share the same values and are invested in seeing the vision come to life. They are committed to seeing the business prosper and they feel at one with it. This is why it is absolutely vital that you only hire team members who reflect your values in their lives. An alignment of values is far more important than aptitude or experience in the recruitment process. Zappos is an incredibly successful online business that specialises in shoes. It is a business that is built on vision, values and culture. Every resource and strategic decision is dedicated to seeing their vision of ‘delivering happiness’ come to life. They emphasise culture above everything else and the business prospers. The business was recently acquired from Amazon for a lazy $1.2 billion. That is the power of culture. Your business culture is a reflection of everything you do. You may not have built a team but your culture is already being established. If you want to build a powerful, uplifting and inspiring culture then you must do the following: 1. Prioritise your team members and community. 2. Provide opportunities for them to grow and progress. 3. Give them support and help them unleash their gifts on the world. 4. Be generous with your time and listen to their concerns, ambitions and feedback. These are the pillars of great culture. Prioritise your vision and values over everything else and you will build a rich, strong and magnetic culture. This will be the foundation to your success and you will reap outstanding rewards.

14.01.2022 What is your Lead Domino? There is an endless number of tasks you can be doing at any time to grow your business. I used to attend countless business workshops and I would often walk away with a complete sense of overwhelm. Every speaker would sprout the benefits of their favoured technique and I felt ‘insufficient’ for not doing more. I would hear all about the virtues of Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, YouTube, Google, Twitter, Linked In, webinars, podcasting, vlogging amo...ng many others. I HAD to be doing them all if I wanted to be successful. or did I? I have observed many business owners attempts to incorporate several marketing mediums all at once. The result has been a dilution in quality and interaction as they simply don’t have the means to contribute to all of them. They compromise their standards and actually do their brand a disservice. It quite often looks haphazard and it appears like they were more focused on ‘ticking a box’ than producing a quality outcome. An approach that I found immensely beneficial is identifying the lead domino in your business. This is the one method that when executed consistently with excellence will produce outstanding outcomes. There is no need to focus on the multitude of other options because the ‘lead domino’ is producing outstanding results. It makes everything easier. My lead domino is videos. I create quality videos with a professional videographer that take preparation, commitment and planning. I research locations, delivery and best standard practice. I then deliver these consistently (every week for over 5 years) and the results have been immense. They have generated millions of dollars in business and have positioned our services as world class. Are you spreading yourself too thin trying to do everything? What is your lead domino that will produce outstanding results if delivered at a world class standard? The other significant benefit of focusing on your lead domino is that it relieves an enormous amount of pressure. It makes marketing, sales, administration and staffing much easier. It channels your focus and energy and produces exceptional results. Identify your lead domino and you will see your impact magnified and your success increased.

13.01.2022 The Number 1 Tip in Building a Successful Fitness Business Kevin Frazier & Daniel Henderson

11.01.2022 Be Wary of Labels Labels can only confine. Aspire to be undefinable Colin Wright I had the immense pleasure of presenting with several industry powerhouses last week at Idea World in San Diego. I was excitedly telling a fitness professional about the enormous privilege it was prior to the presentation. He was surprised to find out who else was presenting and commented ‘but you are just an Aussie PT’. I momentarily began to question my credentials and suitability for the ...presentation. The label had triggered some doubt and I began to question my value. This is what labels do and we often put them on others as well as ourselves. Labels limit your world, impact and potential. They imprison your thoughts and suffocate the magic that resides in you. They also trigger conformity as we mistake them for our identity. Acting outside of our label is difficult because we may have been embedded with this limiting belief for such a long period. We may use labels with great intentions such as heaping praise on people. As parents, we often will call our children smart, athletic or pretty. These labels can actually place enormous pressure on children as their identity becomes intertwined with this label. Labels conform us and limit our experiences. For example, the label ‘I am not creative’ may prevent the pursuit of creative outlets as you have already told yourself you lack any kind of creative capacity. Labels can also lead to stress as you feel a constant pressure to uphold that pattern of behaviour. I have heard Personal Trainers answer the question: what do you do? With the response ‘I’m just a PT’. This immediately downplays the incredible role that this person has in someone’s life. They completely sell themselves short. More than that, they don’t understand how remarkable they are as a person. Are you using labels to describe yourself? How are these labels limiting your growth? Are you using labels to describe others? The label didn’t consume my doubts for long and I delivered a presentation that received terrific feedback. I refused to be confined by the label and set about impacting as many people as possible within the room. Don’t be constrained by a label. You are more than a series of labels. You are an amazing person who is unique beyond a singular word and the assumptions tied to that word.

11.01.2022 The most effective way for building your fitness business Referrals need to be a central strategy in building your fitness business. This is where a majority of new clientele should originate from. However, many people just expect referrals to organically occur. This is not the case with a ‘Next Generation Fitness Business’. They systemise the referral process so their business regularly attracts new members from within. An important model for referrals is the EARR model:... Earn You must earn your referral through delivering a world class service and terrific results Ask Some referrals will naturally occur without proactively asking but this doesn’t maximise results. You need to ASK regularly. Recognise You need to publicly recognise your clients when they share a referral. This may be recognition within a Facebook post, e-mail or a sign within your premises. Reward Your clients won’t refer because of a promised reward but it’s a nice touch. I used to try and find rewards that were meaningful to the client. For example, purchase a book we were talking about. The adage ‘what gets rewarded, gets repeated’ is important here. Referrals should be requested at 3 stages within a customer’s journey: 1. At some stage within the first 7 days of them joining the business. The client feels positive, empowered and energised about the pivotal and courageous decision they have made to enhance their health. They have taken proactive and affirmative action and it is likely that they would be sharing that with others. You should ask the following: Who else do you know that would be interested in taking the same courageous decision who have made to improve your health? We would love more people like you enhancing their lives within our business 2. You should ask 2-3 members per week for a referral after their workouts. You should keep a spreadsheet so you ask different people each and every week. You can ask for the referral in person or even via text message. This is how you could ask for it: You were on FIRE today! I just love your energy, passion and commitment. We would love more people just like you training here. Who else do you know that would be interested? 3. Run a referral competition every 4 months. You can deliver the referral competition within the physical space of the business or online. Essentially, you create a killer prize that is really valuable. You then ask for referrals and every referral gives the referrer an opportunity to win the grand prize. If you launch this online then you get people to comment or tag their friends and you draw a major prize. Every entry should receive a runner up prize so you get a host of new people joining your fitness business.

11.01.2022 Is Fear holding you Back? In the days preceding our first kettlebell course I was almost paralysed by a rising surge of fear of public speaking that almost saw me cancelling the course. The fear of failure and embarrassment was overwhelming, but I realised in time that these negative feelings were irrational and dangerous so I set about facing them and conquered them that day. This catapulted my career on a trajectory I couldn't have even imagined. Public speaking to large au...diences has now become an integral part of my business and it is also one of the most rewarding things I do. In recent weeks, I have spoken at 4 educational events centred on helping fitness professionals become more successful in business. I have had countless conversations with attendees and I have heard multiple excuses on why they are not moving forward in their businesses. I could summarise all the excuses with one word. ‘Fear’. You can see the fear of success, wealth and failure strangling them and preventing their greatness from shining in the world. This fear is choking their progress and they will stagnate in mediocrity if it is not banished. Fear becomes disabling when it manifests itself into something bigger than it should be. We quite often lose perspective and this is when fear becomes burdensome. However, there is an upside to fear. It is not always an impediment to success and it can become a great teacher. It forces us to consider our decisions meticulously and diligently. How do we battle this 'fear' so it doesn't impede us and leave us living of a life of regret and unfulfilled potential? There are a number of strategies we can implement: 1. Identify its Source This can be a difficult introspective process of self-exploration. It will take time and it may be confronting. You need to give yourself space and look to potential triggers from your past. Keep asking yourself ‘why you are afraid’ and you will locate its cause. 2. Be aware that regret tastes far worse than failure. When I am gripped by fear and contemplate retreating from its discomfort I remind myself how I would feel if I didn’t even attempt to try. This immediately helps me embrace the fear and move forward. 3. Keep your eye on the prize Your grand vision needs to be at the forefront of every decision you make. When you do this, you will push fear aside and move one step closer to the realisation of your dreams. 4. Practice creates confidence Embracing fear gets easier with practice. Challenge yourself with small fears and this will build the confidence to embrace bigger fears. Squashing my fear of public speaking was one of the most powerful achievements I have accomplished. It unleashed a whole world of amazing opportunities that would never have been available if my fear engulfed me. What fears are holding you back? I implore you to overcome them with this 4-step process and you will uncover your potential.

10.01.2022 Getting Stuck in the Details I suffered from a distinct lack of productivity last week because I got lost in the details of a decision I had to make. The decision was relatively minor but that did not stop me from getting stuck in the minute details of it. I googled incessantly, read copious amounts of information and debated it within my head for a solid 3 days. I committed so much time and energy into a decision that should’ve been made in minutes. I was so scared of gettin...Continue reading

09.01.2022 Are you Fully Present? Two weekends ago I was enjoying a lovely time with my son. It was perfect We were basking in the sun enjoying a great time in our favourite café. I then decided to check my e-mail and my mood and enjoyment changed in an instant. I received a frustrating e-mail from a trainer and I became agitated in front of my son. Not only did I ruin my experience but more importantly I negatively impacted our time together. There was absolutely no reason to check m...y phone. Had I been 100% present and immersed in the moment then I wouldn’t have ruined a perfectly beautiful experience. My insatiable desire to check my e-mail to feel important overruled a perfect time with the person I care most about. I cared more about an e-mail than my son in that instant. I have caught myself out several times since this occurred. This happened the other night as I checked social media instead of enjoying bath time with my son. I lost focus and attention as I checked my phone whilst enjoying a conversation with a friend over coffee. I am surrounded with the most amazing people and I’m not even fully present. I am missing great moments and experiences. I am allowing my whole state to be dictated by a phone. Here’s some questions for you to ponder: Are you fully present in every moment? Are you checking your phone when you could be enjoying a conversation with a ‘real’ person? Does your phone need to accompany you on every meal and outing? I am not missing any more great moments or letting my mood be dictated by an e-mail or social media. I am incorporating boundaries and encourage you to do the same. Here are some of my strategies: 1. Have a phone free day 2. Delete social media from your phone 3. Leave the phone at home or on flight mode when enjoying food or a drink I know being present will lead to more great moments in life, greater connections and stronger relationships. It will lower stress, anxiety and I have no doubt productivity will improve. It will also enable ‘real’ relaxation. It’s the only way to live!

07.01.2022 Great Leaders Inspire Greatness in Others This week I was attacked online for ‘copying’ an organisations training techniques. I was insulted by this group and criticised both personally and professionally. The accusations were completely unsubstantiated but that didn’t seem to matter. They were hurling their remarks behind their keyboards with fury and delight as they supported one another in doing so. I was unfazed by the comments but rather fascinated as to why they were... happening. Why were they committed to this ridicule? Why were they like lemmings and blindly following one another? Why were they fitness professionals when they were committed to putting people down rather than building them up? My intrigue triggered a desire to learn more about this group and the reason become crystal clear It was their leadership. This group had adopted a victim mentality as their leadership preached how they had been disrespected, mocked and taunted for their training ideologies. I am not sure about the validity of their concerns but they carried a constant grievance as a result. Therefore, they defended everything they perceived as a threat (ie me copying) with irrational venom. Their leadership was deeply embedded with narcissism and arrogance but this groups followers had mistakenly identified this for strength and confidence. The latter are virtuous characteristics of strong leaders. The group has some truly remarkable philosophies and training results. However, this has just fed the narcissism and justified their behaviour to their followers. Great leaders will act with humility, fairness and they will not compromise their morals to attain results. A great leader will personify integrity and authenticity. The need to always be right is relinquished for open mindedness and a commitment for doing the right things. A great leader will be a source of positivity and inspiration. They will empower, encourage and support people and will never ridicule, criticise or insult others. People crave leadership. It is a psychological need that emanates from our desire for authority and significance. In addition, people want to be part of a vision that infuses meaning into their lives. This group fulfils these needs for their followers. Unfortunately, the leadership is destructive on many fronts and this in turn will handicap their potential positive impact. Who do you turn to for leadership? What values do they embody? Are they enhancing the world and leaving a positive imprint? Leadership is a responsibility to uplift the people around you and motivate them to greatness. It is a privilege and an opportunity to create a better world. Follow leaders that inspire you to dream, inspire you to become the best version of yourself and inspire you to excellence.

06.01.2022 A smart man learns from their mistakes; a smarter man learns from others mistakes. You may not realise this but you have the unique ability to time travel if you so desire. Building a business is a lot of trial and error. You try a number of different strategies and hope they reap rewards. Some are hugely prosperous whilst others completely bomb despite your hard work, energy and commitment. It’s a time intensive, exhausting and unpredictable approach. You ride the emotional ...rollercoaster of success and struggle. The first 12 months of owning my studio almost broke me. I was trying to do EVERYTHING from scratch. I was training clients 30+ hours a week and then trying to design training, admin, marketing and sales systems. I designed over 100 systems and had no idea on whether they would bear fruit. Some did, whilst others created more problems than anything else. It doesn’t have to be a brutal battle. It can be more predictable, efficient and successful. I guarantee that there is someone out there that has built a similar business to you. They have experienced all the years of frustration and trial. They know what works and what doesn’t. Why don’t you learn from their experiences and use their strategies and systems? You will literally accelerate your success by several years. I was moments away from burn out and leaving the fitness industry. I knew I needed help as I couldn’t survive another 12 months with my current approach. I invested in coaches that walked the path I was on and it enabled me to create multiple businesses that were profitable, seamless and predictable. If I battled away on my own then I would no doubt have departed this great industry. Investing in a mentor will be an investment in the short term but how much is your time worth? What would you invest to literally save you years of time? What would you invest to double your income in 12 months rather than 3 years? This is what a great mentor will do. It is a privilege for me to share my experiences, insights and systems with a growing number of professionals. It excites me to see businesses accelerate their growth and people develop professionally. The impact is profound and humbling. This is a tough and challenging journey but you can make it a lot easier. Seek out great mentors and you will give yourself the best chance of success. You will impact more people and have a more profound impact on this world.

04.01.2022 You need to Constantly Evolve If it does not challenge you, it does not change you 11 years ago I was preparing to deliver my first PT session. It was an outdoor session with a couple preparing for their wedding day. I was a bubbling nervous wreck but managed to deliver the session reasonably unfazed. I delivered another 1000+ sessions that year and then realised I needed a new challenge if I was to continue to grow professionally. ... That challenge was launching my own PT studio (a massive 35sqm room). I was challenged to my core as I had to learn about business and the many roles it entailed. I managed to learn more in my first 12 months operating the studio than I did in my 5 years at university. The next test I embarked on was expanding the studio and my team so we could enhance our impact. There were many important lessons in regards to management, leadership, communication and organisation. At the same time, I launched a national education company with my great friend Tarek. This thrust me into great uncertainty as I had limited experience as a presenter and even less in designing courses. I fought sweaty palms, shaky legs and a churning stomach as I delivered my first 10+ courses. I grew more comfortable and embraced the nerves and the challenges of being an educator. I relished the experience and the opportunity to transfer my knowledge to passionate fitness professionals. I am now embarking on my biggest challenge yet. Leading an International Education company that inspires, equips and empowers over 5000 fitness professionals in 17 countries. We have evolved our services to enhance our impact. This expansion will bring a host of diverse and demanding scenarios that will either result in growth or overwhelm. However, I love the lessons, experiences and skills you derive when you confront the unknown. It will no doubt be a rollercoaster of emotions as we encounter obstacles, successes and uncertainty. Evolution and growth are realised when you embrace discomfort. If you want to uncover your potential and enhance your legacy then you need to get comfortable with the uncomfortable. How are you ensuring you grow on a regular basis? How are you ensuring you are constantly challenged to uncover your best? Will you choose comfort or courage when confronted with the unknown? Embracing challenges with courage will ensure you are an unstoppable force that will leave a mighty imprint on this world.
