23.01.2022 I cant wait to be offering this amazing testing in clinic from August. Microbiome testing is the newest and most detailed gut microbiotica testing providing a complete picture of the bacteria within the gut and their functional potential. Metagenomic (or whole genome) sequencing of the gut microbiome, can identify individual genes in the microbes that may contribute to its function and the related influence on functional health.

23.01.2022 We all knew painkillers arent the best when it comes to dealing with health concerns but did you know that some of them have been linked to further health complications such as heart attack, liver damage and stroke? It really does make you question whether it is a good idea to be giving our children Ibuprofen products such as Neurofen when it has now been linked with such severe health consequences in adults.

22.01.2022 A question I get asked on a regular basis is why do I feel better when I dont eat wheat if Im not a coeliac? This article explains why non-coeliacs can still suffer wheat and gluten sensitivity.

19.01.2022 Express Bone Broth Remember this is high in protein, amazing for the immune system and gut health and low in calories so the perfect snack when you are working at home to stop you bingeing from the pantry. I like to add raw spinach and chives from the garden but you can add crushed garlic, turmeric, grated ginger and even some noodles if you wanted to bulk it out.... It also makes the perfect breakfast! Just add boiling water.

18.01.2022 My very own home grown garlic. Did you know that during the growing process conventional garlic farmers spray their weeds with synthetic pesticides, weed-killers and inorganic fertilizers. This can leach a lot of nutrients out of the end product. Knowing my food is as clean as can be is important so I know my kids are getting the very best nutrients from their food.

14.01.2022 Are you getting the lock down waistline? We are all guilty of it, checking our pantry's constantly between work to see if there is something more interesting in there than our computer screen. Ultimately this leads to eating things that on a normal work day you wouldn't even contemplate putting in your mouth. My tips for maintaining your weight and keeping healthy during this lock down period:... 1. Exercise first thing in the morning, the earlier the better. Even if this means a walk around the block. This will give your metabolism a kick start. 2. Delay breakfast. This gives you a period of fast in the morning. You should be aiming for at least 12-13 hours between dinner the night before and eating again the next day. A 10am breakfast means no snacking before lunch so you have already cut out extra food in the day. 3. Remember, if you are working from home you are now missing out on all of that incidental exercise that you use to do getting to and from work and walking around the office. This means you need to adjust your caloric intake so eat smaller meals. 4. Cut out all of your starchy carbs!! Yes try to eat a diet that is high in protein and vegetables rather than filling up on bread, pasta and rice. These types of carbohydrates only contribute weight gain. 5. Drink 2-3 litres of water daily. Dehydration can mask itself as hunger sometimes so drink throughout the day. 6.Foods to avoid: sugar, excessive amounts of fruit and alcohol. These all raise insulin levels and cause weight gain. 7. My last tip is to stick to main meals and eliminate snacking.

10.01.2022 Get the kids involved and off their devices We are making veggie and chicken soup tonight to fill their tummies with loads of goodness. Remember to eat a combination of cooked as well as raw foods. The cooking process releases lots of nutrients from foods making them easier for our bodies to absorb. Fibre from vegetables is also a great prebiotic for gut health.

07.01.2022 Tips for keeping your immune system strong at home Most of us are now working from home and some of us will also have kids about so it is important we all take simple steps every day to support our immunity as well as our mental health. Here are some tips:... 1. Try to use fresh veggies for all of your meals. Nutrients start to deplete in frozen meals but are the most dense in fresh veggies. 2. Plant a few herbs in the garden. This is a great thing to do with the kids. Most herbs have fantastic antibacterial effects and fresh herbs such as peppermint can be used in iced water and tea straight from picking. 3. Bone broth!! You may not like the sound of it and if you dont want to cook it yourself pick some up from the health food store and support local business at the same time. Bone broth is super nutritious for you and the whole family and can be used in place of stock when cooking. 4. Use plenty of garlic and onions in your cooking. These have been known to fight of infection and stimulate our immune system. 5. Buy some essential proteins now and freeze them. Proteins such as meat and fish are necessary to help cells recover especially in times of stress. They will also stop you from filling up on unnecessary carbs (which might be making your waist line a little bigger while youre at home). 6. Exercise!! Exercise stimulates the immune system and is essential for release of endorphins that will help us feel motivated that this will all soon be over and there will be an end coming. Strength work is vital so muscles are not wasting while we are more sedentary than usual. We must remember to take care of each other too. We are all in this together and we will get through this together.

05.01.2022 Skin Bacteria helps protect against skin diseases There are more and more examples of the ways in which we can benefit from our bacteria. According to new research, this is true for the skin as well. The work has shown that the most common bacteria on human skin secrete a protein which protects us from the reactive oxygen species thought to contribute to several skin diseases. The protein has an equally strong effect on dangerous oxygen species as known antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin E.

04.01.2022 When were on holidays we still try to keep it healthy and fun for the kids. An Acai bowl is packed full of antioxidants and vitamins to keep the kids going for a full day at the beach. Acai berries are low in sugar, but contain excellent amounts of iron, calcium, fiber, and vitamin A. In fact, Acai berries contain 10 to 30 times more anthocyanin power than red wine. Beneficial fatty acids such as oleic acid, one of the same oils found in olive oil, is another strong point and healthy levels of dietary fiber keep the system functioning smoothly.

03.01.2022 Plastics can cause anxiety in boys A new study has examined early life exposure to the chemical Bisphenol A (BPA) and found that boys exposed prenatally to a common chemical used in plastics may be more likely to develop symptoms of anxiety and depression at age 10-12.

03.01.2022 Recent studies suggest that one main way that UV exposure is linked to melanoma is its link with sun exposure as a child and teenager. People with melanoma often have an early history of sunburns or other intense sun exposures. I think it is just as important to remember what sunscreen you are using to help protect yourself from the sun as well. Most are full of synthetic UV filters which are often harmful themselves, especially when they come in contact with the sun causing skin damage, irritation and aging. Try to choose a natural sun protection solution free from all synthetic UV filters. One that I find works well and is 3 hours water resistant is the Natural Instincts brand.
