22.01.2022 Great news for Glebe Hill.

21.01.2022 This plan will have a major impact on the future of Rosny - which is generally regarded as Clarence’s urban centre. I encourage as many people as possible to have their say.

20.01.2022 Should voting in local government elections be compulsory?

19.01.2022 The official results are in and as I suspected from the early returns I will not be serving as an alderman in the next term of Council. On the plus side, I am very pleased to see Doug Chipman returned as Mayor and Heather Chong as Deputy. I believe they will make a great leadership team. I congratulate all those who were successful in the election.... I am saddened not to see the return of my colleagues Debra Thurley, Kay MacFarlane and Peter Cusick, all of whom made an incredibly valuable contribution to Council deliberations. Of course, Jock Campbell and Doug Doust also won’t be returning due to their decision not to re-contest, and their contributions will be greatly missed too. Over the past four years, it has been a privilege to work with a group of intelligent, dedicated and hard-working aldermen. While we may have disagreed on individual issues I believe most of us were united in terms of the direction of Council - a direction which has delivered fiscal sustainability, quality services and prosperity. I hope that with the new Council continues heading in the right direction, and I won’t be shy in offering my opinion on whether or not they are. You can expect me to be an active participant in public debate about Council issues. I will be continuing to actively campaign for Council to pursue an economic development agenda that leads to Clarence being a prosperous city. I am also not ruling out a return in 2022.

17.01.2022 In this digital age I know some people feel like it’s a waste of paper when these books arrive at their doorstep - but cancelling future deliveries of your hard copy white and yellow pages is quick and easy.

15.01.2022 This is one of the reasons why I have advocated for better public education about Tasmania's planning law and the role of councils as planning authorities.

15.01.2022 Residents of greater Hobart are getting fed up about the lack of action on traffic congestion. In what other city would a single crash cause a 15km queue?

14.01.2022 I strongly encourage Clarence businesses to participate in this survey, which takes 12-15 minutes.

14.01.2022 We want you to have a say! We have one more drop-in information session about the Tasman Highway - Sorell to Hobart planning study. Come to the Rosny College G...ym, Rosny next Saturday 10 November between 1 pm and 3 pm to find out about the study and give us your feedback. You don’t have to come along for the full two hours. You can stop by for as much time as you can spare, to have a chat and have your say. The study will help us decide how best to reduce traffic congestion on the Tasman Highway, between Hobart and Sorell, and will look at infrastructure improvements between Hobart and the airport, and improving the way that people walk, ride their bikes and catch public transport between the airport and Sorell. If you can’t make it to the session, you can read more about the project, fill out a survey and give us your feedback online here: www.bit.ly/HobartSorellstudy

11.01.2022 I was recently elected President at the inaugural general meeting of START - Southern Tasmanians for Action on Roads and Traffic. I am looking forward to the campaign for action to tackle Hobart’s worsening traffic congestion. If you would like to join the campaign for traffic solutions follow the link below and fill out the form to become a member of START. Membership is free.

10.01.2022 What a great idea. I hope that Clarence is one of the councils that has contacted the company about its product.

09.01.2022 I have to agree with Luke Martin on rejecting the idea of a tourist tax - it is complicated, costly and unnecessary. I have long argued that the way for Clarence City to increase its revenue to fund better infrastructure and services is to attract more businesses to the city and increase the commercial rate base. Clarence has a great deal of unrealised potential in the visitor economy and Council must work on developing that potential. A good start would be the implementation... of Council's economic development plan. In the meantime, my message to Hobart City residents worried about coping with visitor numbers is simple - send them our way!

06.01.2022 Voting closed at 10am today and the counting starts at 3pm. I am grateful to everyone who helped my campaign and gave me encouragement, including friends and family. I am particularly grateful to my wife, Chrystal, fer her love and support which has made the journey so much easier. Regardless of the result, I will continue to work for the community in this place I love so much. It has been an honour to serve the residents and ratepayers of Clarence for the past four years.

06.01.2022 Simon Fraser - Your Alderman for Glenorchy City Council very succinctly explains a point that I often made during my term on Clarence City Council: There is an ongoing conflict between a councillor's role as a representative of the community and their role as a member of a planning authority. These roles can be tough to reconcile. Planning law says that you should apply the scheme whereas the residents and ratepayers who elected you expect you to represent their views. I can ...appreciate the frustration people feel when they think that their concerns have been dismissed by councillors and planning officers when in fact their concerns may not be dealt with under the scheme, or a considered decision under the scheme is contrary to the outcome they want. Towards the end of my term, Clarence City Council passed a motion I put to investigate options for more community education on planning, so that residents and ratepayers can better understand the role of a planning authority as well as being more empowered to participate in planning decisions.

05.01.2022 There is still time to vote! Drop off your postal ballots to Council by 10am TuesdayThere is still time to vote! Drop off your postal ballots to Council by 10am Tuesday

03.01.2022 Based on the count so far it appears certain that I will not be re-elected as an alderman. I am proud of what I have achieved over the past four years and of what the Council has achieved. As an alderman you can achieve very little if you don't work with your colleagues and I am pleased to say I had a good working relationship with the other aldermen. My proudest achievement is the production of the 2016-2021 Economic Development Plan, which - even without being on Council - ...I will be advocating strongly to be implemented. I remain a strong supporter of local business and development for the sake of the job opportunities it brings as well as the rates revenue. As I said in my campaign flyer, I want to see more commercial development in our city so that we can invest in the best infrastructure and services without putting pressure on existing ratepayers. This was always going to be a difficult election, not just because there was a strong field of candidates but also because of some of the nasty and dishonest campaigns being waged against the current Council. While that may have benefited one or two candidates I believe the result so far shows that the majority of residents and ratepayers believe the Council is heading in the right direction. It is a fiscally sustainable council, providing excellent infrastructure and services with a strong economic direction, and is the envy of its neighbours. I believe we have taken the right action in relation to implementing the Kangaroo Bay Urban Design Concept Plan and the Rosny Hill Recreation Area Management Plan. I would like to give a big thanks to all those in the community who have encouraged and supported me and helped my campaign. I would especially like to thank my wife, Chrystal, for believing in me and standing by me. She and my two boys, Elliott and Alistair, are my inspiration. I will have some comments to make about the results - congratulations and tributes - but I will leave that until the count is finalised. I hope to see Mayor Doug Chipman returned as mayor because I believe he is a strong and effective leader with a clear vision for the city. It is too far out from the next Council election to say whether I will be running again, but I am committed to public service so no matter what you will all be hearing from me in the near future.

02.01.2022 It is unfortunate when political opportunism gets in the way of economic opportunity.
