24.01.2022 Important Budget announcement from Premier Dan Andrews and Treasurer Tim Pallas this morning! This year, the global pandemic has shown us just how many workers are being forced to choose a day’s pay and their health - and the health of every Victorian. Over the past eight months, we’ve seen just how dangerous, and unfair, that can be.... That’s why the Andrews Labor Government is going to do what no other government has - develop a new Secure Work Pilot Scheme, to provide up to five days of sick and carer’s pay at the national minimum wage for casual or insecure workers in priority industries. Read below for more information from the Premier: From Madrid to Mumbai, Michigan to Melbourne the pandemic has laid bare the true cost of insecure work. With no leave entitlements to fall back on, too many people have been forced into an impossible situation with impossible decisions: Going to work ill or an empty bank account. The safety of your community or feeding your family. Your health or your rent. Insecure workers shouldered the burden but everyone paid the price. And pandemic or not, the principle remains the same: no one should be put in this position. That's why we're stepping in where no one else has. Our Secure Work Pilot Scheme will provide up to five days of sick or carer's pay for casual and insecure workers in industries where it's needed most and creating a safety net for those without one. We'll be consulting with industry, workers and unions over the next few months to get this right. But we expect the two-year pilot will cover workers in occupations with high levels of insecurity such as cleaners, hospitality staff, supermarket workers and aged care staff. Because it's 2020 not 1820. No one should have to go to work sick because they can't afford not to. No one should have to choose between caring for a loved one and getting paid. And this way they won't.

15.01.2022 Lest We Forget. Today is Remembrance Day, and while we may not be able to observe the day with traditional marches and large community commemorative events there are still many ways to recognise the sacrifice of our fallen soldiers. Some ways to commemorate include: ... observe the traditional commemorative one minute of silence at 11.00am on 11 November watch a virtual presentation via the Shrine of Remembrance’s Facebook page or YouTube channel from 10.45am buy and dedicate a virtual poppy to loved ones online as part of the RSL Poppy Appeal children can create a messenger dove leave a message of thanks on social media using the hashtags #RemembranceDay20 #VictoriaRemembers #RedtoRemember. In 2018, we marked 100 years since the end of the Great War, and this year we commemorate the 75th anniversary since the end of WWII. In our hearts forever. *photo taken pre-COVID at Laurimar Primary School’s 2018 event to mark 100 years since the guns fell silent to end The Great War.

13.01.2022 It’s NAIDOC Week 2020! NAIDOC is a time to celebrate and appreciate Aboriginal cultures, languages and histories. NAIDOC week is normally held in July but was delayed this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.... And, although the celebrations might be a little different this year, the strength and resilience of our Aboriginal Communities continues to shine through. This year’s NAIDOC theme is Always Was, Always Will Be, acknowledging that the First Nations Peoples have occupied and cared for our country for more than 65,000 years. I was delighted last year to join Mernda Central College in welcoming Victorian Treaty Advancement Commissioner Jill Gallagher AO to talk to students about the First Peoples' Assembly of Victoria. I’m proud to be part of government that is delivering our nation’s first Treaty with our traditional owners. *Picture taken 2019 (pre-covid).

The project also included building six new accessible parking spaces near the station entrance, and a new Parkiteer bicycle storage facility to enable more commuters to cycle to the station. A big thank you to everyone in the community who advocated so passionately for this project, especially Lois Needham. Ben Carroll MP

11.01.2022 Yesterday, Treasurer Tim Pallas and the Andrews Labor Government handed down the 2020/21 Victorian Budget - and it’s the biggest we have ever seen. This is a Budget that puts people before the bottom line. It’s a Budget for families, for regional communities, for workers, schools, TAFEs, hospitals, businesses and so much more.... At the heart of it, this Budget is a commitment to helping people, improving lives and making our state a fairer place to live. It’s an investment in Victorian people. It’s an investment in Victoria’s future. And, most importantly, it’s a Budget that puts people first. *The video was filmed on Budget day (24 November 2020)

08.01.2022 The Victorian Fisheries Authority Golden Tag competition is back The expanded fishing competition includes new areas, additional species and more chances to win! More than 20 new tagged fish - worth $10,000 each - have been released in the water across country Victoria. ... Plus there’s more than 950 of the $2,000 tagged fish still swimming around in the state’s east and north-east! Earlier in the year I helped release some of the golden tagged fish. So, I’m really excited that this comp has been extended as it provides new oppor-tuna-ties for families to land a valuable catch. The Golden Tag competition will run until December 2021. It’s about getting fishers and families back into regional Victoria and supporting local businesses, especially in bushfire-affected areas - so, while you’re trying to land a catch, make sure to get out there and enjoy what our state has to offer.
