23.01.2022 Today is World Sight Day and at Guide Dogs, we see firsthand the challenges that come from low vision or blindness. That's why we encourage you to keep up with ...your regular eye tests and seek advice if you notice a change in your vision. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it's estimated that 2.2 billion people worldwide have a vision condition and of those, at least 1 billion have a condition that could've been prevented or is yet to be addressed. Here's an example of what the world might look like if you had one of these vision conditions: Age-related Macular Degeneration, Cataract, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Retinitis Pigmentosa and Neurological Vision Impairment. If you experience low vision or blindness, how would you describe your vision? [Image description: A 3x2 image grid of a yellow Labrador in harness looking front on to the camera. Each image shows how the dog would appear if a person's vision is affected by each vision condition.]

22.01.2022 As #WellbeingWeek comes to a close and the weekend begins, we bring you the evidence-based practice of Mindfulness. The benefits of mindfulness are plentiful, a...s APA Pain Physiotherapist Marelle Wilson, MACP, explains: Mindfulness helps to build the capacity to be aware of both pleasant and unpleasant and with time, to be able to stay with difficulty without turning to our automatic reactions and habits to get rid of uncomfortable thoughts and feelings. When it comes to pain, we know that pain related distress and fear can further activate the stress response, which in turn can further increase the pain experience. Learning Mindfulness can improve mental and physical wellbeing, emotional regulation and can be a really important skill to include as part of a chronic pain management programme. It's not complicated and almost anyone can learn mindfulness with the right training but that doesn't mean it's the right thing for everyone. A well-trained teacher can help determine if Mindfulness training would be helpful for you. For more information about mindfulness, please go to https://bit.ly/3eFSt4z #StayFitSaturday

07.01.2022 Today is World Arthritis Day! This year we are taking a closer look at some of the more unknown arthritis conditions, as well as some more common forms...but ...first, here are the simple facts about arthritis in Australia: 3.9 million Australians have arthritis. That’s 1 in 6 people. By 2030, it is projected there will be 5.4 million Australians with arthritis. Around 2 million people with arthritis are of working age (15-64 years) Arthritis cost the health system $5.5 billion in 2015. This will rise to $7.6 billion by 2030. Children get arthritis, too Arthritis is the leading cause of chronic pain and the second most common cause of disability and early retirement due to ill health in Australia. 52,000 people (aged 15-64 years) unable to work due to arthritis Extra welfare costs and lost tax revenue due to early retirement due to arthritis cost $1.1 billion in 2015 #WorldArthritisDay
