25.01.2022 That look when you realise you can do two of your fav things at once... Ride a horse and chase a ball! Hope you all still have the moments.

25.01.2022 Templers Clinic Full and a couple on a cancellation waiting list. (Will have to organise another clinic there soon) Still a couple positions available for the 12th and 29th at Mount Barker.

24.01.2022 Hyper sensitive horses always turn out the best... Sundance Kid... You’re amazing, you have flicked that switch knowing who you need to be for what job you’re on... Extremely snappy for working cattle, cool but as boisterous as you need as a ponying horse, chilled and sensible always setting a good example as a clinicians horse, and now most importantly incredibly careful and connected anytime you’re around Dace and especially switched on to him and what we need when he’s on your back. You’re not always perfect, but you’re perfect for me. Quit desensitising all the life out of one of Mother Natures wisest creations, leave the horse in the horse and they’ll be sensitive to everything they need to be when it’s needed in good time.

22.01.2022 Using Liberty work to help the beautiful big (and Spring fresh) Lennie get flow in the arena and give him the option of leaving as a test to see if his mind can stay with me at all times... All to transfer through to his riding... Which was a very nice ride after this warm up.

22.01.2022 How’s #NoSaddleNovember going? Yeah nailing it. May be a bit unbalanced. May have fallen off. May not have got out of a walk. Had a go. Na too scared. ... #DTHRteamthisgen Sponsored Rider, Courtney Munro.

21.01.2022 This is across the board for all disciplines (riding disciplines). If you really want to test it, try in a halter with just one rein. Of course I’m no purist, I get effective when I need to, especially on a job that needs to be done, perfect or not. Are you communicating with the horses feet? Especially if you’d like a consistent soft contact... Or pulling on their mouth?

20.01.2022 I’ve been told by (some) animal science educated people that there’s no such thing as hierarchy or a leader in horses and even dogs. Whoever’s PHD findings this was, your time would have been more productively spent in front of a Microscope or probably doing a Bachelor of Arts. You’ll learn more from watching horses than you ever will from YouTube, DVD or online subscription. Nice and grounded Horses, in a mob with space to be horses will teach you how to treat horses if yo...u’d like to be their trusted leader. Drink time this morning before a mid morning camp, had Nulla (of course) come in first and take his sweet merry time sipping away at his leisure while everyone waited at a distance for their turn. Sundance then came in respectfully, but after a little while Nulla hunted him away. Annoyed (*animal science, horses don’t get annoyed or even think such complex thoughts), Sundance chased Pandy around, then Pandy Chased Tic around, Tic just sulked. Sundance came back in and hurried his drink up this time with Nulla keeping watch. Watering 4 horses took nearly 45 mins for everyone to be full and happy, give each other a quick groom and then have a smoko sleep together in the shade down the paddock. This could all be humansised with multiple or longer troughs in the middle of the paddock rather than a paddock corner to make the humans feel better, but it wouldn’t change the horses. It’s no different to the likes of where I was last weekend with a trickling stream out of a mountain spring with room down between rocks for one horse to water at a time. Learning from Mother Nature will not only make you a better horse person, but a better human.

20.01.2022 Edited: SOLD. Congratulations @belleejstyles , perfect Combo 5 yo QH Gelding. 15.3 hh. Ad for a friend. In my opinion, this sweet boy has had just the right (a little amount) of work for his age and is ready to hit his pins in his training now his body is at an age and development size. Also some videos on Instagram, but can DM any through. Six Thousand Five Hundred Dollars... Started by another local, skilled and reputable breaker, and has been worked lightly and spelled ...intermittently. Is well mannered but relaxes best at the start of work if he’s given a job to do, which may be poles or ponying a horse etc... Flappy cheerleader training doesn’t work on all of them, some horses like to get straight down to business to relax. I was most impressed with his natural mental strength and grit when the other day we had to really go to work on a horse we were ponying out on the trail that got to broncing and rushing on us. He kept his cool and worked at exactly what I asked every second I asked it and even took a few liberties himself to shoulder the horse around himself trying off his own back to train the other horse in what he needed... I had a proud grin for him from ear to ear for most of the ride. Relaxing under pressure is my most favourable trait I look for in any horse. Any can be quiet with training when nothing is happening, only some keep it together naturally when life can turn, or unexpectedly turn into high pressure. Interested potential buyers can send a DM with what their goals are for their riding and him would be, what home and environment he would be kept at and who their coach/riding mentors are.

19.01.2022 The horses I get to train... So, so grateful . Lennie, Versace Warmblood now continuing his dressage training with Steph Hann. Still some pics to come of his ridden work by the marvellous @leonietaganphotography. This horse is the definition of uphill movement and is a pleasure to ride and train.

17.01.2022 Do you move out of the way of your horse all the time? Are you sure? This lovely youngster respected me with some huge try by getting brave and walking over a scary and extremely unnatural piece of ground, just because I asked him to. Although I’d made the scary noise on the tarp to prep him, his front feet on the tarp scared him and he did what is natural for horses, take flight. Make or break moment in a youngsters life could have gone one of two ways: Me moving away, ess...entially pulling him (encouraging him) onto me, teaching him running into the human is his only choice under pressure? Or sending him somewhere, anywhere, else away from me under pressure? Horses have faster reaction times than any human, they’ll move if you expect them to. Yielding any muscle off or away from your horse is encouraging them to push you around. Especially from an early age, keep the horse in the horse and don’t desensitise the try and respect out of them.

15.01.2022 Show your animals some respect. Can you imagine having a foster child in your family, and as soon as you meet people you explain to them, these are my well bred children, but this one, this one is our rescue child, I saved it I’ll be honest, I don’t want to hear it. It doesn’t change what your horse needs in that moment. You’re only telling me about your ego, not your horse. ... I’m not saying to not help any animals you can. It’s admirable, especially seeing often it’s way more expensive in the long run than buying a well raised, well trained horse. I’ve had rescue horses myself, I don’t skite about it though, I leave their past behind them and get them to work to show the world their best self. Some people have genuinely unloaded horses off a dogger truck. Some rescue horses have just been taken from one place to another and labeled saved. Some were happy in a mob, but just a bit skinny... and now are locked up, fat, off their head on feed and been taught to run people over. Many get saved, then can’t financially be given what they need and have needed saving again. In any case, just like with humans sometimes it’s the most privileged that need saving the most. Lacking a few hardships in life is a near guarantee of mental health challenges, especially when put under pressure later in life. Is one reason why the easiest people to turn into vegans are first world, white city people... Tell me I’m wrong? The Brumby I trained is a great example of the opposite, after being abducted out of the wild by humans and kept at the asylum he was at, everything else in life is easy in comparison. He now literally has the best home in the world. It’s simple. Give horses what they need, it’ll get you you want much easier. Drop the ego and all the human white noise and be in the moment... (ironically written passionately in human words) PD.

14.01.2022 Why book a yearling/youngster in long before it’s time to start/break them in. Flynn, WB x Arab yearling in for two weeks. A youngster that comes in for some foundation training, long, sometimes years before it is time to start them will have a much easier time when it’s started under saddle and will advance far more quickly than one that will have to be trained so much slower if left till a later age. ... I’m not going to break my horse in until it’s 5 or 6... That’s great, then will you only send your child to school at 16 because yr 11 and 12 is when they only really learn what is important? You may be doing some of training at home also which is great. (SOME, is great for a youngster, more than that and I’d rather them be left alone completely) but having them go and stay away from home and their usual friends and environment and dare I say, you... will fast track their maturity and confidence like nothing else. They learn to relax in what is often a high energy training environment, IF they are given release of being in a paddock (being a horse) with nice horses in between training. Flynn apparently lays down to sleep at least twice a day at home, it took until the end of the first week until I saw him relaxed enough to lay down when he was with us, then that habit will become solid anywhere they go, or at least the relaxing part. They are taught foundations of everything they will need for their first week of starting under saddle, except the simple part of riding them. They get used to different tasting water and different looking troughs etc (anyone who travels with horses knows how important this is). They can have any personal challenges focused on in their training, for example; floating, feet handling, socialising with other horses, confidence building with bagging down etc. The kindest thing you can ever do for a horse is train it well, especially from a young age... One of the cruelest things you can do it just teach it to be a pet if you ever want it to be anything more than that. Flynn was with us for two weeks which was a perfect time for him to learn and settle, made some great friends (Sundance loved him), learnt a lot and was happy to go home and tell his mates how big and brave he is now.

11.01.2022 Spur84 Pandy Utah, now 5 and back in work after a 6 month spell. Growing up and being guided by the treatment and advice of our extremely thorough and experienced Equine Physiotherapist, we’re bringing him along with the strengthening work and miles out work he needs while his spine is fully fusing etc (longevity and sustainability over $$ for minimal age). Thanks Hayleigh.

10.01.2022 I hate riding breakers out with other horses. Not until I’ve got some solid communication and foundations of our connection together. My horses (all mine in training) need to be with me at all times, not with another horse. Training them early to be with another horse early is potentially setting them up for many fails. By all means, learn a system, better still learn multiple systems to know when to break the system. ... This mare was best helped by breaking my usual practices by helping her forwards through resistance by riding out with a lead horse, only once, and is now doing all her riding out clocking up miles and hours under saddle with a strong connection with me. I love the try she has under saddle now making her forwards foundation stronger all the time and enjoying her work feeling like she’s free to move in her natural state... (out of a bloody arena).

07.01.2022 First time trying to ride in a string, so not perfect but great for her first time... Darling Foxie, I don’t care how far you’ve come, it’s all in the past and I know horses live for the moment... I’m so appreciative for where you are now. Leaving Friday and I’m going to miss you. Make good decisions, don’t ever loose your sass, and keep up your try.

06.01.2022 Cow horse/gun work horse (competition ready), forward trail horse. Five Thousand Dollars. 14.3 hh. 11 yo QH Mare. I seriously considered taking on this mare in my mob as another reliable work horse for myself and family (I’d happily put Lauren on her and she’d be a good size for Dace in 4 years), but I really do have enough horses and I’m hoping I can find her a home to be someone’s everything. In a little and downhill body she has big movement, hock action, is wonderfully ...forward and travels with ease. CAN stop and turn around on a cow... when she reads that cow turning, you better have a deep seat. History a bit unknown as she was bought unseen from QLD last year and is a bit too much horse for a young learning rider. But as always what is more important than what humans tell us with alleged info, is what the horse tells us is the truth. from my experience, I’d say she’s bred strongly in the performance/cow horse lines. She’s done a lot of miles and cattle work and enjoys a job and a lot of love, the type who turns her head every time you get off for a cuddle (and gets one). Loads, travels, shod and hard ties, all well... Is a catch, saddle and go horse. All pics on the job, so not the usual nice and pro Leonie Tagan standard but is a honest portrayal. Interested potential buyers can send a DM with what their goals are for their riding and her would be, what home and environment she would be kept at and who their coach/riding mentors and support professionals (Vet, Farrier, Physio etc) are... Usual conditions for our business
