23.01.2022 A drug called "golimumab" currently on the market for other autoimmune conditions such as arthritis can help kids and young adults newly diagnosed with type 1 diabetes still produce insulin, according to new research. "During the period just after diagnosis, called partial remission or the honeymoon period, patients are still able to make some insulin on their own," says Teresa Quattrin. "That is the period we have targeted with this study of golimumab." 20.01.2022 "If I was talking to a politician who was funding CGMs for adults I would say my insulin pump gave me about 50% better control and combined with the CGM it would now be 80%. I am a new person with my CGM. I cannot imagine my life without now" Meet Kim current DANII Foundation CGM scholarship Recipient "The brain drain from the relentless, never ending stress and worry of guessing blood sugars, predicting the future and trying to correct the past is over. I have not felt s...o happy, relaxed and relieved about living with T1. It’s not a cure but it’s the closest thing I’ve experienced to being able to manage and have a better quality of life. This is life changing technology that helps adult’s manage their own health and well-being and keeps us out of hospital and prevents diabetic complications. I am forever grateful to the DANII Foundation for their tireless work in helping adult’s mange this lifelong condition" Kim Dodwell We will keep fighting for #CGM4all - sign the petition https://zcu.io/I90y Donate - https://zcu.io/ynmj #CGMscholarship #DANIIfriend #DANIIfoundation #NOMoreFEAR
19.01.2022 "Having being lucky enough to be selected to receive a DANII Foundation scholarship in 2020 has literally saved my life over and over again" says Matthew Meet Matthew current DANII Foundation CGM scholarship Recipient. "I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the young age of 3, it has been a part of my life now for 32 years. ... Being diabetic for so long I have become hypo unaware which has resulted in scary lows especially while I am sleeping. I am a Dad to 3 young and energetic boys, so life is just one big rollercoaster. Having the CGM has allowed me to spend more quality time with my boys rather than constantly worrying about highs and lows. I work in a high stress retail management role and rely heavily on my CGM to keep me in line while at work but also while sleeping it helps alarm & alert my wife when my levels are dropping or going high. My HBA1C levels have improved dramatically since adding CGM to my life, they are now consistently around 6.9 where as previously they were as high as 10. I have also avoided ambulance call outs and hospital trips since having a CGM. The DANII Foundation are amazing people helping average diabetics like myself with this life saving technology. CGM needs to be funded for ALL Type 1 Diabetics. 19.01.2022 Diabetes does not discriminate. Anyone can develop diabetes. "My reason for asking you to priorities funding for all Australians living with T1D is, as a family with several members living with T1D I have seen first hand how much of a difference having a CGM has been for our 6yo son, to his health and our (parents) long term mental health, knowing alarms will wake us in the night and alert school to issues during the day. My partner also has type 1 diabetes but he is not eli...gible for a funded CGM under the current rules. We have been lucky so far but there have been a couple of close calls when a CGM would have alerted us to dangerous lows much earlier and I know long term using a CGM supports better, more stable ongoing blood glucose levels greatly reducing the high risk secondary healthy issues. Funding or at least part funding CGM technology for all Australians living with T1D is an investment in long term health and will take pressure off the health system and support people with T1D to stay working for longer too. It’s a win win for all and the best decision to make. I urge you to fund CGM technology for all with T1D. 18.01.2022 "My name is Ayla-Jade. "I’m mum to a full-of-life 5yo boy and beautifully cheeky 3yo girls. I’m also a Uni Student studying Education, an active member of my small remote mining-town community and a FIFO (fly-in fly-out) wife" Meet Ayla-Jade current DANII Foundation CGM scholarship Recipient "Before CGM it was constantly on my mind that with the sometimes unexpected nature of being a Type 1 Diabetic that something could happen. With my husband away from home at an even mor...e remote mine site for most of each fortnight and my children being so young there was no one who would be able to help if the worst should occur. The idea of my children being put through that or not being able to care for them is the most terrifying thing I can think of. We looked again and again at CGM to help alert me if something was going wrong but being a stay at home mum and student relying on a single income it was just not on the cards for us financially without making my family sacrifice. Enter the amazing DANII Foundation. Thanks to their subscription program I am able to go to sleep at night without worrying if I will be there in the morning to care for my children. I am able to focus on life and fun and be there and present with the knowledge that I have this little sensor helping me keep my life in balance. CGM is not only lifesaving, it has given me back a quality of life that I didn’t realise I had been missing. 17.01.2022 Diabetes Awareness Month The mask of a parent with a chronic illness is real. We don’t put it on to feel semi-functional. We put it on to hopefully hide from the questions. Why isn’t he stable yet? Good job losing weight! How do you give your child shots?... I have a pill that can help with that. But he has a pump, so you are good right? Behind every mask is a face. And behind every face is a story. Don’t mistake it for weakness, but a pillar of strength. A parent of a T1 warrior is one of the strongest you will ever meet. Somewhere on the planet, there is always a parent wide awake a 3 am keeping their child alive. It takes someone really brave to do this job, someone really strong to raise a child to be fearless in the face of this disease, and someone special to love someone more than herself. 12.01.2022 Repost @drews.daily.dose World Diabetes Month 2020 "I want to talk to you about the link between mental health and diabetes. I just finished an amazing outdoor workout on the rowing machine and my body was flooded with feel-good endorphins which turned into an overwhelming urge to share some words of encouragement.... As I always say, diabetes is a full time job. It takes no days off and requires a HUGE amount of attention to detail. Unsurprisingly, so many people get totally burnt out trying to constantly manage their diabetes. Imagine trying to train a puppy...forever! That’s diabetes for you. From the moment of being diagnosed it’s common to experience immense grief, depression, anxiety, anger, denial and many more emotions. This can last for years. It can be mentally exhausting trying to manually micro-manage a condition designed to be automatic. From the constant blood glucose testing to the insulin dosing, counting carbs, predicting trends and patterns, dealing with low, highs, overnight issues, stress, and of course the social, psychological and physical hurdles. I know I make it look easy to manage my diabetes but that’s only because I’ve put in SO MUCH WORK! Literally 10 years of daily experimentation and working WITH my diabetes as a partner rather than fighting against it. So, this is a shout-out to anyone living with diabetes who is battling mental demons. Maybe you’re ashamed to ‘wear’ your condition on your body in the form of an insulin pump or glucose meter. Maybe you’re embarrassed to test your levels or administer insulin in public. Maybe you feel judged by others. Maybe you live in fear of developing short and long term complications. Whatever it is that you’re feeling right now, I want you to know that you’re not alone. My best advice is to try see your diabetes as a life-long partner who you need to work with - not an enemy that you’re at war with. Be patient. Listen to it. Learn from it. And try to manage it so that it doesn’t manage you!" DANII.org.au #worlddiabetesmonth #mentalhealth #diabetes #type1diabetes #type2diabetes #CGM4all #DANIIFoundation
11.01.2022 Diabetes + Mental Health These are just some of the thousands of thoughts I've had on a daily basis as a type one. Maybe there's a few you can relate to aswell. Approximately 2 MILLION people in Australia suffer from anxiety. Up to 50% of Diabetics are likely to suffer from anxiety or depression. You are not alone in having these thoughts. Its not that its unnatural to have them, but we shouldn't let them stop us from enjoying our life. ... Type 1 Diabetes is with us all day, every day, 365 days a year, no breaks or holidays, so if you need a chat, or some help with letting go of these thoughts, or even to shake off some negative behaviours, theres no shame in it.
