15.01.2022 Check out this excellent article featuring the research of UNSW Law Emeritus Professor David Brown, who says harsh punishments, such as longer prison sentences, not only do not prevent crime but may have the opposite effect. Danila Dilba continues to advocate for changes to the criminal justice system in the Northern Territory, including better programs that help reduce offending. Jailing people doesn’t work and can often make things worse for offenders, families and the co...mmunity. It’s important to keep our mob out of the system and use better alternatives that actually deter re-offending restorative justice, not harsher punishment like longer sentences. 11.01.2022 Our people are being jailed at a growing rate and we’re overrepresented in the criminal justice system. Today the Justice Reform Initiative (JRI) was launched, with over 100 eminent Australian’s working together to end this country’s high dependence jails. #JailingIsFailing our people and communities. ... The evidence is clear when you put offenders who are not a threat to the community in jail, you increase the likelihood they will commit more serious crimes in the future. The revolving prison door is bad for families and communities and entrenches disadvantage. It wastes human potential and is scandalously wasteful of public money that could be spent on enhancing the wellbeing and productivity of communities. JRI Chair Robert Tickner Visit the website for more information on the Initiative and the broader impacts of a heavy reliance on the prison system. https://www.justicereforminitiative.org.au/

01.01.2022 A big shout out to Danila Dilba's Maida Stewart who recently completed a Churchill Fellowship investigating how Healthy Homes initiatives can help to prevent Acute Rheumatic Heart Fever and Rheumatic Heart Disease. Maida, who travelled to New Zealand for the fellowship (before COVID-19), found community-led solutions that were low cost, high impact and fit for purpose were often the most effective in reducing the risk of ARF. Maida said the Northern Territory could also learn... from this approach. I learnt that there are effective solutions that can be implemented right now to make our homes healthier, she said. This problem is not completely beyond our control and there is no reason that we can’t look to similar solutions to help prevent ARF and RHD in our communities in the Northern Territory and across Australia.
