23.01.2022 Three key nutrients are needed for bone and muscle health as we age. Most of us will be familiar with Protein and Calcium but did you know that Vitamin D is essential for calcium absorption and forms the 3rd essential nutrient? In Australia most of us consume more protein daily than we require but it can be harder to get our calcium and vitamin D requirements, particularly if we follow a strict vegan diet or spend little time outdoors.... Good sources of Protein, Calcium and Vitamin D are listed below: PROTEIN - (lean chicken, lean pork, fish, lean beef, eggs, tofu, beans, lentils, low-fat yogurt, milk, cheese, seeds, nuts, pulses and grains. Vegetarians can normally get adequate protein requirements from having a varied diet. CALCIUM - dairy products and calcium fortified milk alternatives, salmon, sardines, herring and other canned fish with small bones and to a lesser extent foods like broccoli, kale, collard greens and soybeans. It may be harder for those following a vegan diet to get their daily calcium requirements without supplementation. VITAMIN D - the best source of Vitamin D is UV from the sun (a few mins of sun exposure to the hands and arms 3x week during summer is sufficient for many people to build their vitamin D stores to last through winter), however absorbtion is impaired if you have very dark skin, regularly wear protective clothing/cover up with a high SPF factor suncream or if you have a disease which effects your ability to metabolise Vitamin D (e.g coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis or renal failure). Some margarines, cereals and dairy products are fortified with Vitamin D. Protein, Calcium and Vitamin D are vital as we age, particularly for people with bone thinning (osteopenia) and osteoporosis. 1 in 5 people over the age of 50 are diagnosed with osteoporosis and the incidence is higher in women, particularly those with a low BMI (body mass index) and family history. Maintaining a healthy diet and exercising regularly can help slow bone and muscle deterioration which keep us stronger and active for longer and consequently helps to prevent falls...WIN WIN!

21.01.2022 In these trying times it can be especially helpful to take time out of our busy schedules to just be. We dont need to do anything fancy...just sitting with the breathe and observing thoughts, sensations and emotions as they arise can be enough to redirect our attention to the here and now and away from our thoughts, which have a sneaky way of leading us away from freedom and toward greater suffering. With several new members joining us lately we have been revisiting the con...cept of beginners mind which we can bring to all of our practices - yoga, meditation and the body scan. Come and explore this and much more with me during chair yoga every Tuesday from 10am @ Bedford Morely RSL hall.

20.01.2022 If you've attended my classes this week you'll recognise this sentiment. Meditation and awareness of the unconscious mind is a total game changer. Recognising that we spend upwards of 95% of our time in our unconscious minds is but it needn't be! When you begin to sit and breathe in a conscious way, to notice your thoughts, to identify patterns, to recognise and release your hold on what no longer serves you, you are truly on the path to awakening. The recognition that YOU ...and only YOU are responsible for your choices, your behaviour, your life is so empowering. You are NOT your thoughts! No more identifying with intrusive thoughts. No more wasting time worrying what others think. No more blaming others for your situation. No more second guessing yourself. No more playing small. No more staying stuck and powerless. Evolution is your birthright, so go chase it! And when the ego, which craves safety and familiarity, tries to derail you, use your newfound wisdom to PAUSE, SMILE and RECOGNISE that your attention has wavered. Then before you have a chance to jump on that thought train to nowhere good, CONSCIOUSLY CHOOSE not to. Try placing an unhelpful thought on a leaf and watching it float downstream. You might need a whole lot of leaves! With practice, you'll get better at not engaging with your thoughts. Why do we practice mindfulness meditation? To be present. Because the present is the only place to live. The only place to experience true peace. How to (5 mins): 1. Find some place quiet to sit and be away from distractions. 2. Begin by noticing your breath - the sound, pace, texture. Notice where you feel your breath in your body. 3. Place your awareness somewhere on your breath (belly, nostrils, etc) or count your breath from 1-10 4. Everytime you notice you've strayed from from your breath (unconscious mind) PAUSE. 5. With compassion identify the process 'thinking' 6. Place your thought on a leaf/cloud and let it float away. 7. Return to your point of focus on your breath. REPEAT, REPEAT, REPEAT This takes practice! You won't get this overnight so be gentle and give yourself oodles of compassion. Happy Being Friends!

19.01.2022 Here are some GREAT low impact weight-bearing and muscle strengthening exercises you can do to help curb muscle and bone loss as you age. Doing these in a chair / using support make these safe and accessible for most bodies. A FEW POINTERS: Do these slowly and aim for between 8-12 repetitions on each side. This video is sped up! Repeat up to 3 times a week ensuring you leave a rest day in between. Remember to breath as you move. You could enter into the movement on the out...breath or the inbreath, whatever feels most natural and supportive for your body. Always have a chair, wall or your countertop to use as a support. As you get stronger and your confidence increases you can reduce your reliance on the support. Ive offered levels for some of these exercises. For the wall pushup start close to the wall then work your feet further away. Progress to a single arm push up if you need more of a challenge. Tree pose is a great single leg balance but there are lots of other options. If you find this too challenging you could start with both feet close together and one foot slightly in front of the other then progress to a tight-rope position with the feet where the toes of one foot touch the heel of the other. Simply lifting one foot off the floor is also an option. If you are new to chair stands a chair with high arms and a few books to lift your hips can make lifting off a little easier. As your strength improves cross the arms over your chest and maybe even add a hand weight for an extra dimension. There are loads of muscle strengthening exercises you can do from a seated position. Ive included a small sample. Ensure you do the same number of reps per side and if using a hand weight you could definitely have one in each hand to make it more challenging and then increase the strength of your band and weight as the exercises get easier. Start with a light theraband and 0.5-1kg weights if you are a beginner. Most of all...ENJOY AND... if you need the motivation of a class setting to get you moving check out my chair yoga class each Tuesday @10am at Bedford RSL hall.

18.01.2022 Way too beautiful not to share.

17.01.2022 Hi, I'm Dani, A qualified (350hr) yoga instructor who teaches supportive yoga classes at 5 different locations in the Perth metropolitan area. If you're a senior, experience persistent pain, have restricted movement or simply require a gentler exercise option to keep active into your later years why not give chair yoga a try? ... The mind/body connection is a key feature of my classes. We focus on moving mindfully and honouring our bodies. You can expect practices that support building strength, endurance, flexibility and balance while learning to use your breath to create calm and ease of mind. The chair is a tool to support us in sitting and standing postures making this practice accessible to most. Two of my new classes are currently in a trial phase and seeking new members: - MON, Inglewood Community Centre @ 10am - FRI, Bethanie South Perth @ 1pm. If you've been meaning to come along to a class, now is a great time to start. With just 4 weeks remaining until the Christmas break, please text/call 0400257287 for rates or to find out more about these or any of my other classes. If you have attended a class in the past please consider leaving a review to share your experience of chair yoga with the uninitiated in our community. Thank you!

17.01.2022 Hi friends, As many of you who follow this page may know, in addition to teaching yoga kayaking on our beautiful Swan River is definitely up there with one of my favourite past times. Sadly there is a lot of rubbish in and along the banks of the river and while many of us in the community get out and do our bit to collect trash I thought regular community clean ups might be the way to go to better tackle this issue.... If youd love to contribute your time please add yourself to the group page where I will post updates about an upcoming river clean up in either late October or November. TOGETHER WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

15.01.2022 This was an important point addressed in the online ageing and falls prevention course I took recently so a timely reminder for all seniors. If you suspect that your vision make have changed or if you wear multifocals and find yourself tripping more its important to consult an eye specialist. Deteriorating vision and multifocals can increase your risk of falling.

14.01.2022 I love this article about the best way to approach a yoga class for people living with dementia. It's given me plenty of food for thought as I head out to teach my monthly class at a nursing home in West Perth. Yoga really is for EVERY BODY

13.01.2022 Yes, a big emphatic YES!!! I am feeling really blessed to be able to offer a service to the young and young at heart in my community. As I take on more responsibility I am finding that doors once bolted shut (by my own fears and insecurities) are opening.... Are you in touch with your mess? The parts of you that feel less than whole, the facets you hide from the world for fear of rejection? This mess has become my message. A message that we are all unique and have unique gifts to offer. Let us all stop wasting our energy/time comparing ourselves to others or trying to do things right. See yourself as a gift because its how I see you all. I dont care if you mix up your left and right (I do too!), I dont look at the way you execute a posture but rather the degree of ease you are experiencing on and off your mat. I instruct to guide others to reacquaint themselves with their bodies and breathe. The vast majority of Yoga you see on social media is largely theatrics and none of it concerns me in the slightest. I had my 2nd class yesterday at my new venue in the city and 15 people showed up. 15 unique and lovely women and men devoting an hour of their time to self-discovery and self-care. My heart is full!

13.01.2022 My 2 Chair Yoga Startups through Bethanies West Perth and South Perth Living Well Centres are back on track with the first classes likely to be in term 4. Week starting 12 October: Monday morning @ 40 Violet Street, West Perth... Friday afternoon @ 57 Coode Street, South Perth Ill share more details in the coming weeks. In the meantime, dont be shy to let your family/friends/neighbours living north or south of the river know that some accessible chair yoga classes are coming their way. I am so excited to finally see these classes reach fruition after signing a contract back in January this year. Im really thrilled to share the gifts of yoga with the seniors in my community & would absolutely love your help to spread the word about these classes.

13.01.2022 A little about me, my new startups & why I love teaching and recommend chair yoga. Feel free to share with friends and family who may benefit.

11.01.2022 If you only walk on sunny days youll never reach your destination. - Paulo Coelho Yes! So much truth to this. I used to avoid winter like the plague along with anything that triggered fear in me - public speaking, taking on added responsibility, making mistakes. These three things combined were particularly nauseating. Whats amazing is that as I stop fearing life so much opportunities are beginning to present themselves to me, some of them I havent ...even had to chase! Its so lovely that I have now landed work that is helping me to heal from my past. I still get anxious when Im teaching a new class or I have new members joining for the first time. I still doubt my abilities at times. I have the same fears that most people do but I no longer allow them to consume me. Whats changed? Im making peace by letting go of perfection. Ive learnt that I dont need to be bubbly and full of beans to be good at what I do. Ive learnt not to compare myself to other teachers. As a typical introvert I need to carefully manage my time and how much I give of myself. Teaching yoga can be draining but it neednt be. Most of all I am learning that most of us are learning this thing call life as we go. Making it up as we go. Many of us are fighting our own demons. What matters is to keep going, not just when the sun is shining but also through the storms as well. Afterall thats when real growth happens, right? The Orchard Garden - a stones throw from where Ill be teaching a new class from next Tuesday. I rode in today to time the route and work out where to lock up my bike. I can see this gorgeous space becoming my second home on a Tues afternoon.

10.01.2022 MEET OUR MEMBERS! Heres what the lovely Helen who joined our class at the start of 2020 had to say about her Chair Yoga experience: "Due to age and health issues I decided to try chair yoga and absolutely love it.... I have always exercised and participated in many classes along the way...pilates, balance, etc. Chair Yoga ticks all the boxes for me. Dani projects a calm manner and guides us through the routines. The ladies are very welcoming and I make mention of Shirley who greets everyone with a lovely smile. I enjoy the breathing, meditation and balance exercises. Come along and give it a go." We love having you in class Helen! If this testimonial has motivated you to start moving more and chair yoga sounds like a good fit for you Unfurl Yoga has you covered. We meet Tuesday mornings at 10am at Bedford RSL hall ($13/session). Wed love to welcome you to our group.

10.01.2022 Beginners mind.... Seeing things as if for the first time each time we come to our mats is something we learn to cultivate. When we have a consistent practice and pay attention on purpose this becomes more instinctive. With increased awareness we begin to notice that certain movements, breathing practices or even meditation may have different mental, physical or emotional effects. Without labelling our experiences as good or bad we can develop witness consciousness whereby we... simply observe and get curious about what is going on in our bodies. To do this it helps to get out of our heads (haha...easier said than done!) using our breath as a compass to steady us on the path. There will be times when our body can benefit from being challenged in order to grow and other times when backing off or modifying can help us to find reprieve from pain or discomfort or to support us when we are tired/unwell. Nobody can tell us how to practice. Nobody can tell us how we should feel or what the postures should look like. That is unique to our experience and bodies, something we have to figure out for ourselves. The poetry of Mary Oliver reminds me of what being mindful is all about. Slowing down and paying attention to the little things is at the essence of her work. Tell me, when was when last time you stepped outside and looked at a tree or clouds or a flower with fresh eyes as if for the first time, rather than through the veil of your opinions or past experiences? I shared this lovely poem in class this morning. Photo care of https://www.poeticous.com/mary-oliver/the-sunflowers The Sunflowers by Mary Oliver Come with me into the field of sunflowers. Their faces are burnished disks, their dry spines creak like ship masts, their green leaves, so heavy and many, fill all day with the sticky sugars of the sun. Come with me to visit the sunflowers, they are shy but want to be friends; they have wonderful stories of when they were young the important weather, the wandering crows. Dont be afraid to ask them questions! Their bright faces, which follow the sun, will listen, and all those rows of seeds each one a new life! hope for a deeper acquaintance; each of them, though it stands in a crowd of many, like a separate universe, is lonely, the long work of turning their lives into a celebration is not easy. Come and let us talk with those modest faces, the simple garments of leaves, the coarse roots in the earth so uprightly burning.

08.01.2022 Yogis / non yogis have you read this book? Thoughts? I am completely blown away by this book Some of us are aware of the healing power of the breath but the author argues that breathing in our modern age has become something of a lost art. As a devotee of yoga, learning to regulate my breathing and lengthen my exhalations has literally cured me of panic attacks and anxiety so conscious breathwork is something that I swear by but it has myriad other benefits too (you'll have... to read to find out). Whether you are a seasoned breath worker, or have never given much thought to your breath I urge you to read this book (on top of the fact that it's really well researched and highly entertaining, you'll likely never think about your breath in the same way again!) I borrowed this from my local library but it's so good, I'm going to grab myself a hard copy. #jamesnestor #breathelife #pranayama #mindblown

06.01.2022 After a random phone call yesterday afternoon from a lady who found me through an online search and a meeting this morning I suddenly have a new chair yoga offering in Perth City! This is the first time chair yoga has been offered at this location. There is something so exciting about new beginnings. Details:... CITIPLACE COMMUNITY CENTER Tuesdays, 2-3pm Seniors do you know about this unassuming gem? The community center offers an array of services for over 55s and people with a disability. They have an OP shop, podiatrist and hairdresser, a cafe as well as classes like Feldenkrais and yoga. Ive walked past the center countless times in the past but had no idea what was behind those doors. For those reliant on public transport this is the perfect location as its on the concourse level of Perth Train station. This picture shows the dining space where the class will be held. Its huge and light filled with a beautiful outlook. I could not be more thrilled to be offering this service to seniors and cant wait to get started in a few weeks time.

06.01.2022 Happy Friday peeps! Officially certified...

04.01.2022 As I spend my day planning for classes Im reminded of this exerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit that one of our mentors Saam shared with us during our training. Its beauty and wisdom strikes me every time. Being authentic and real in my offerings has always been important to me. We as instructors can be a beacon for our students, modelling letting go of making yoga a performance and tapping into our authentic selves. This weeks class schedule:... Monday covering miyogavibe 10.00 - 11.00am CHAIR YOGA (North Beach C.C) 12.00 - 12.45pm CHAIR YOGA (Dianella C.C) Tuesday 10.00 - 11.15am CHAIR YOGA (Bedford RSL hall) 2.00 - 3.00pm CHAIR YOGA (Citiplace C.C) Friday 10.00 - 11.15am VINYASA FLOW (my home)

04.01.2022 https://www.charlottewattshealth.com//benefits-walking-un/ Today we headed south to Jarrahdale and walked the kittys gorge trail...only this time I challenged myself to walk the return route (just under 6km) barefoot. Why you ask? In TCM reflexology is the application of pressure to reflex points on the feet and hands. These points are said to connect the flow of qi (energy) and correspond to the various organs in the body. What better way to massage your feet than walking... on uneven surfaces? In China many people walk and even dance on cobblestones for 30 minutes/day for their health. Our ancestors did a lot of walking, up to 16km/day. We know about the importance of walking for cardiovascular health. Walking barefoot and on uneven surfaces demands that all the muscles in the foot work together to balance us so the feet become stronger and work optimally. In comparison walking in shoes on even surfaces means that many muscles in the foot become weak from underuse which can have a flow on effect of pain in the ankles, knees, hips and even the lower back. Im not suggesting everyone throws themselves into barefoot walking without easing their way in. A weekly foot massage using a spiky ball, tennis ball or wooden dowel is a great place to start. Warming up the joints by rotating your ankles and flexing and pointing the toes and feet (hello yoga also great for the feet!) can prep your feet for barefoot walking. Start with a short distance and a surface like grass/sand and if you have existing foot or joint issues then its best to consult a specialist beforehand. Clearly our feet could benefit from spending less time in shoes and on more challenging surfaces. Do you choose to walk barefoot? If so, where, when and how often? What has been your experience? Ive certainly been inspired to switch up my hiking with a little more barefoot walking

03.01.2022 I retired my balance and coordination circuit from our chair yoga classes during Covid but this video has inspired me to reintroduce these concepts as I know how important balance, coordination and reflexes are as we age. What do you think crew? Is there any aspect youd like to work on specifically? Thanks to Omni Fitt for this great video. Exercise is definitely more enjoyable when youre having fun.
