20.01.2022 Very sorry to pass on this news. This is the final weekend for Danks Street Market. We felt the market went well and we have had hundreds of signatures in support of the market and dozens of fb posts. We are very careful to clear the ground before we start a market. In this case that involved a written & signed agreement regarding the various type of vendors that could be present at the market, as well as assurances by Meriton that their staff would contact the local reta...il shops to inform them about the start of the markets, and invite them to take part in the markets. Despite all of this, it appears that some of the retail tenants have (since we opened), lobbied Meriton and Meriton in turn have lobbied the Council for them to discontinue issuing of the permits for the markets after this weekend. To our lovely customers... we thank you for your support and patronage. To our traders.... We would like to thank each and everyone of you for the hard work and effort that you all have put in to make Danks Street Market the well received community event it was, however short lived. We will be offering all of the traders positions in our other markets, some will already know at which market they can be found, and they will be able to tell their customers... Today is the last day. Please come along and say farewell! :( See more

20.01.2022 Clarification regarding the Councils position in this matter. We don't want people to think the City is at fault in this matter. The fact is that the City of Sydney 'saved the day' in the first instance by issuing us an event permit that allowed the market to actually open, when it turned out that Meriton were mistaken in their belief that they owned Crystal Street (the site of the market). City of Sydney Council issued the event permits because at the time, Meriton overwh...elmingly supported the market and strongly lobbied the Council for the market to go ahead. If Meriton once again offered their support the City would again issue a permit, but Meriton have withdrawn their support for anything other than a Saturday market 'with only one food stall (gozleme) all others being non food stalls'. What can you do? 1. Certainly advise your local Councillors that you strongly support the market in its original form but remember at the moment the City has the same difficulties as the market operator. They cannot issue a special event permit against the wishes of Meriton and their retail tenants. 2. Email Meriton and lobby them to support the market in its present form. We have all seen from the immense support of this particular market, the important social role markets play in the local community. In particular the part they play in breaking down social isolation, in addition to enriching the retail offering, in new inner city developments. We will continue to try and make sure markets can play their role in local community life. We would like to stress that we have no desire to cause any bad feeling towards City of Sydney Council, they are just as much in the grip of circumstance as we are and without them the market could never have started.

06.01.2022 Danks Street Market THE MARKET WILL BE OPERATING THIS COMING WEEKEND and we hope to see it continue to enrich community life in the area. We want to thank all the Waterloo Community for their support as shown in the posts on this page and also the petition where over 300 signatures were collected at the weekend. We want to stress that everyone should win out of the market including the fixed retailers. All the research done shows that markets bring more business for everyone.... The success of the fixed retailers is vital to the precinct. We will continue to try and be sensitive to their requirements and invite them to come to us with any problems. Finally, we had a report that a 'supporter of the market' went into a shop and complained to the shop owner that they were trying to close the market down. None of us should forget that the fixed retailers are just people like us trying to make things work. They are also entitled to their views and to our respect. No one should ever go beyond the bounds of civilised behaviour in these matters. It cannot be a question of us and them. Everyone has to get something out of this.
