22.01.2022 What are your Beekeeping goals for Spring 2020?

21.01.2022 To all of the Dan The Bee Man Family, it’s come to my attention that one of Victoria’s Beekeeping Supply Companies (The Bunyip Beekeeper) has gone in to administration. This is a difficult time for William and the team and our thoughts are with them... I understand that some of you may be impacted by this - if you are please message me - if there’s any way that I can support I’d be happy to look at how I might be able to do that. Regards Dan The Bee Man

20.01.2022 The little ladies are going to enjoy this! Whilst the season has ramped up slowly, and inspection days have been intermittent, it’s looking to be a good year so far! Hopefully it stays that way. How’s the beekeeping season looking in your area? #danthebeemanoz #danthebeemanaustralia #beekeeping

19.01.2022 Bula from Fiji where the bees have warm conditions all year around! As things start to cool down as we head toward winter it’s really important that we start planning for our pack down. Do your bees have capped honey? Fresh nectar? Capped brood? Grubs? Do you need to feed your bees? Many of my students have found that there just isn’t fresh nectar coming in and have had to revert to feeding. Please ensure you inspect your bees and if you’re concerned that there isn’t enough food ask me how to feed them. Also, at this time of year many have commented that they’re not seeing capped brood/grubs/eggs - they suspect the queen is gone... don’t be alarmed... sometimes your queen will stop laying if there isn’t much food! Consider some 1:1 syrup and maybe a pollen supplement to boost numbers before winter hits.

11.01.2022 Who saw The Great Australian Beekeeping Challenge last night on Catalyst? What did you think?

10.01.2022 Folks, now is the time, if you haven’t already, to be doing your spring inspections! A key aspect of these inspections is to prevent swarming! It’s a crucial aspect of your compliance with the apiary code of practice... you’re looking for the presence of any queen cells - if you see these you need to be proactive and perform a split. The key... ensure your queen always has space in the brood nest to lay! If she doesn’t have space she will want to swarm... any questions don’t hesitate to ask! You don’t have your own beehive yet? Why wait? Now is the perfect time - ask me how.

02.01.2022 A tricky swarm removal of a hive that had arrived just the day before. They’d taken up residence between two floor joists in a day spa. The upper surface is the floor of the day spa and the lower surface was the ceiling of a storage room. Thankfully they were nicely contained by the floor of the spa, ceiling of the storage room and the joists themselves. The only challenge was they extended about 1.5m back from the front edge - further than I could reach. Thankfully there was... some underfloor insulation that prevented them moving further back. When I arrived the first thing I did was put some drawn comb frames in to the cavity - the bees were drawn to them like a magnet and I was able to capture quite a few. Then I had a container which fitted nicely so I physically reached in and scooped bees in to a nucleus colony. I positioned the nuc so the flying bees could access it - I observed the tell tale fanning at the entrance to let me know I’d captured the Queen - I verified this by observing her on the frame. So I then smoked the bees out of the cavity to get them airborne and setup the nucleus so that the returning bees could easily find their new digs. The box has been left there to allow all the bees to re-orient. This is particularly useful in public settings where immediately taking the colony would have left some confused, possibly upset, bees trying to find their colony. #danthebeeman #danthebeemanoz #danthebeemanaustralia #backyardbeekeeping #beekeeping101 #beekeeperslife #beekeepersofinstagram #daylesfordvictoria #beekeeper See more
