In Australia and other allied countries, including New Zealand, Canada and the United States, 11 November became known as Armistice Day a day to remember those who died in World War One. The day continues to be commemorated in allied countries. ... 21.01.2022 MacKillop Building Kindergarten, Years 1 - 3. The finishing touches are well underway as our building project finally comes to an end. The new furniture has been moved into the classrooms and contractors continue to clean the site in readiness for the school to move into the refurbished building. It has been a long two years, but the outcome is nothing less than amazing. We will have a new school, boasting modern contemporary learning spaces that are flexible in how they can be used and fully air-conditioned. It has been a remarkable achievement and we should all be feeling very proud of our school. As with all projects of this scale, there will some ongoing work involving landscaping, new signage, play equipment and a number of other school improvements that will continue in the remaining weeks of Term 4 and into Term 1 2021.

15.01.2022 DIOCESAN CHRISTMAS ART STORY COMPETITION Congratulations to all Year 5 and 6 students who have been working on the Diocesan Christmas Art Story Competition. The Christmas Story Art Competition and Exhibition is an initiative of the Catholic Education Offices in Wollongong and Sydney, designed to celebrate and explore children’s creative and artistic ability in illustrating the Christmas story. This exhibition and competition provides the opportunity for Years 5 and 6 students... to share with the wider community a greater awareness of the role of the arts in Religious Education. Children can develop deeper appreciation for their talents and recognise the value of the arts in expressing understandings of the Catholic faith. A written explanation of each artwork is also necessary. Each school is allowed to submit 6 finalists. Congratulations to the following children chosen at St John’s: Year 5: Catriona C, Jessica H, Dhyllen S Year 6: Ruby C, Lily S, Charlie T Three of our finalists that were sent in from St John's to the Wollongong Catholic Education Office have been selected to proceed to the next level of the competition. 15.01.2022 St Vincent de Paul Christmas Appeal Thank you to the many families for their generous support of the annual SVDP Christmas Appeal. Thanks to you, many families less fortunate will receive hampers for Christmas day. In 2018 Lewis started collecting cans and bottles (Return n Earn) and through his own initiative used all his Return n Earn receipts to purchase food items to be donated to 2018 & 2019 SVDP Christmas Appeals.... Now three years on this is now a newfound family tradition, with Lewis (Year 2) and Izak (Kindergarten) collecting Return n Earn receipts to purchase items for the St Vincent de Paul hampers. Izak is proud and excited to donate 18 Christmas Puddings and 108 Fruit Mince Pies with a total value of $126.12. Lewis calculated (Maths being his favourite subject) that he would get maximum value and to use all his vouchers to donate 50 packets of lollies and 10 packets of chips with a total value of $126.12. Lewis’ family and St John’s are super proud for not only creating this tradition on his own but also sharing the process and proceeds with his brother, Izak. 10.01.2022 The following award is the Mary MacKillop award and this year we have chosen 4 students to receive this significant award. As you would be aware, the Josephite Sisters began the school at St John’s Dapto. Their founder, St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, Australia’s first saint, visited our school and stayed there for some time at the convent. The convent now being our school administration block. Mary MacKillop loved children very much and she saw the enormous importance of a... good education in their lives. It has been a tradition here at St John’s that St Mary of the Cross awards be presented during the Year 6 Graduation evening to students who have displayed an outstanding positive attitude, great commitment towards their education and never see a need without trying to do something about it. These are the qualities that Mary MacKillop herself encouraged amongst, not just her fellow sisters, but also amongst the students within her schools. It is with great pleasure that we announce the following children whom this special award is being presented to this evening: 1. Alexia Foye 2. Giaan Johnstone 3. Jessica Keys 4. Austin Russell
